Dear Workawayers who would like to do volunteering and helping underprivileged children of teaching English in our community out Side of Siem Reap Cambodia. Thank you so much in advance that you are interested.

We are located in Tnol Trong Village, just outside of Siem Reap town. The school registered NGO, which is a non-profit organisation, was opened in February 2014

The school offers free education to nearly two hundred impoverished children and young adults of the Bakong community, many of whom are not able to attend school otherwise because their families cannot afford the related costs. Classes at the school focus heavily on teaching English as a second language.

The school director and the teachers currently work on a voluntary basis.

Challenges

Some of the village's children have lost one or both of their parents, others have both parents but it is in situation not good condition of poverty.

Vision
Cambodia is dependent on tourism which provides a great number of future employment opportunities. For a career within the tourist industry, or for many outside of it, English is essential.

We believe that every child has the right to free, high-quality education. A good education enables children and young adults to develop the essential skills they need to make positive changes in their lives and to break free from poverty.

Our school provides a secure and happy environment for the children it serves. Children follow a consistent curriculum with a clear learning path. Our talented Khmer teachers are supported as much as possible by English speaking volunteers to give students an opportunity to learn English as effectively as possible.

We ask for a minimum of one week for your benefit and the children. We also ask for a $6/day fee that goes entirely to the NGO to support the costs of meals. This has been agreed with Workaway as we are a registered and verified NGO. We offer 3 meals a day.

All volunteers will benefit from cultural exchange by experiencing local life , culture exchange, teaching experiences , seeing how people live in the village , learn some Khmer words. There are some types of local food which you never try it in your life and how it is different from your own food.
There are a lot of ancient temples which are well known around the world. Those are the places that you may prefer to see.

We need Volunteers to teach English at our organisation if we have some volunteers who want to stay a bit longer that will be great, one or two weeks or longer than that.
This can be good communication and experiences of sharing their knowledge to our local children.

We are located just 13km outside of Siem Reap in Tnol Trong village in Bakong district. You will live at the school home stay with other volunteers, on site of the school in a traditional Khmer style home, newly restored with a tiled terrace for resting and socializing. You will have your own personal space or you may share the bedroom with other volunteers. The bedrooms have a dresser, mosquito net, and a fan. Wifi is also available. Good bathroom with western toilet and proper shower.

Private room
if you are couple we will definitely provide you with one private room that can be booked (if available). It is ideal for a couple or for someone wanting their own space.

The school provides all volunteers with 3 meals a day. Breakfast will be small and then lunch and dinner will be authentic Khmer food prepared by Poeuy’s wife. She is a wonderful chef and amazing cook. You may also choose to venture to town to eat at one of the many amazing restaurants or cafes.

There is free filtered water, herbal tea and coffee offered at the home-stay which is available at any time.
The school provides you WiFi 24 hour electricity to charge your electronic devices.

The village is located 5 minutes from two temples. 13km from Siem Reap and approx 20 km from the world wide famous Angkor wat temple. The weekends are free so you have plenty of time to visit them. To come from the capitals of Thailand (Bangkok) or Cambodia (Phon Pehn) they are direct buses only at 5/6 hours away.

It was a joy to help teach the local children English, but not without it's challenges. As native English speakers we had very little idea of the grammar that is learnt when it's taught as a foreign language. The teenagers are learning some fairly tricky stuff. The little ones are learning the alphabet and phonetics. They love a game and are incredibly affectionate and welcoming. It touches your heart.
Fortunately for us other volunteers, Jen, Josie and Ian have been instrumental in putting some excellent and much needed structure in place. So new volunteers can now scan a QR code to get a welcome pack with loads of helpful information when you arrive.
Other people have left excellent reviews that give you some further insight into what it is like.
Phoeury and his wife work very hard and he is very busy , so doesn't always communicate. Perservere, and try using WhatsApp calls, which we found worked better. However once he has agreed for you to come, he will help you to get there either by arranging a tuktuk, about 8 dollars from the bus terminal in Siem Reap or he will pick people up from the airport. Again you do need to pay as the family are ploughing all their income into this school. Accommodation is basic but adequate and food is plentiful and tasty.We enjoyed some outings with the family, which was great fun. Weekends are a good opportunity to explore the area and escape to Siem Reap for some creature comforts, such as a hot shower. Angkor Wat is simply amazing and can be visited in the mornings or at the weekend. Phoeury took us on a day trip for 25 dollars, which was a brilliant start. Then we hired a scooter to spend 2 other days visiting it. The 3 day ticket was 62 dollars and you have 10 days to use it. Apopo HeroRAT training centre is also great as is the National Museum. Pub Street is fun for nights out. The volunteers all help each other and the host family, so it's a great environment to be part of.
Thank you once again, Phoeury and family. We look forward to seeing how things have progressed when we return.

It was my first experience as workaway volunteer and I am so pleased I have chosen this school. Pouey and his family are amazing and inspiring people. They make everything so you feel part of the family. As you might have already seen on the feedbacks, Pouey’s wife is an excellent cook. The food is absolutely delicious (much better than a lot of restaurants).
It is a small school, and you can see the impact the school has in the community. As volunteers, everything is provided so that you don’t lack anything. Pouey likes to make us discover things during the stay. We went together to the floating villages and visited a temple and pagoda at the top of a hill. He gave me a lot of advice on things to visit around the village as I was cycling nearly every morning to discover the beautiful surroundings (amazing market, rice fields, villages, temples, pagodas, lakes). As I say I stayed nearly 4 weeks and I feel I always have something to visit. During the week, I cycled around the village before the lessons (it gives a lot of freedom) and during the week end I went to Siem Reap (a lot of things to visit there and it is only 15 km from the school). I also went the Battambang taking the Angkor Express boat (7 hours) that crosses Tonle Sap Lake to see more floating villages and the life on the lake. The school is perfectly situated if you want to visit as the same time and if you want to stay for a few weeks, you will always have things to visit. It is a great way to be immerse in the real Cambodian life. The work done in the school by Poeuy and his family and Sambath (a regular Cambodian teacher) is so inspiring. They really deserve to be help and supported by the volunteers.
When I was at school, we were a lot of volunteers at the same time for a week. Honestly, it was great as we could divide the class in smaller groups or help some children more individually.
I warmly recommend this school if you want to do volunteering and see the real impact it has on the community.

I volunteered here in June and it was such an amazing experience. It’s hard to give an accurate feedback on how much I’ve experienced, from teaching, from being around this incredible family, and the bond you create with the kids.

The house and the school are in the same place, on the family’s land. You live with Poeuy’s family: his wife, 3… read more daughters, niece, their 4 dogs, and Meow Meow, the cat.
There is a 40$ fee per week to stay and volunteer there. It is fair, you get a nice bedroom, bathrooms, delicious food, electricity, wifi, and water. It is also the only way the school is funded, they don’t receive any public funds and they can only maintain the school thanks to donations.

Poeuy came to pick me up from the airport (I paid him for the transportation) and gave me a tour of the house and the school when we arrived. Communication beforehand wasn’t the smoothest but don’t let that hold you back!! Poeuy might take a bit of time to answer or not answer all of your questions but he’s always respecting what you agreed on and he will be willing to answer more once you are there!

I had my own bedroom with a double bed. The room is basic but you have all you need: a small shelf for your belongings, a bed, a mosquito net, and a fan. One bedroom has 2 beds so you could be sharing with another volunteer but you will most likely have your own. There are 3 bathrooms, shared with other volunteers. They are basic and not very well maintained. But you have proper western toilets and a shower with a shower head (like in most places in SEA, it’s one wetroom with the toilets and shower). It is very uncommon to have a Western-style bathroom here so it is already a chance.

We will most of the time eat with the family for lunch and dinner. Samon, Poeuy’s wife, is an incredible cook. Everything always had so much flavor and was super tasty. We will always have rice, topped with some sour soup, fish, curry with vegetables or some meat. The food was always amazing and very generous. I’m missing it so much already!!
I loved spending time with the daughters and their cousin too, they are incredible young girls! Don’t hesitate to help them with the cooking or the dishes. They are always excited to talk to you and play card games at night. Sidao, the oldest daughter, is so invested in the school. She teaches and helped me a lot in my classes. She is also always willing to take you around, go get some supplies for the school with you, etc.

Regarding teaching, that was the most challenging at first. Classes are from 4pm to 7pm, 3 classes at a time. It starts with smaller kids and ends with teens. You will then teach 3 classes (I was mostly alone or with another volunteer but you could also be with a local teacher, it depends on the number of volunteers). Kids will arrive around 3pm and you have some time to play with them, volleyball or games in the field, but also cards or drawing (they LOVE drawing!!).
The school has no proper structure and Poeuy will not give you many instructions about how to teach, the levels of the kids, and where to pick up. There are not a lot of resources and the few things they have are not very being used and taken care of (books etc.) It’s therefore challenging at the beginning and you might feel useless because you simply don’t know what to do and what is best to teach in each class. I think that’s the downside of the school, it could be better structured and it will help both the kids and volunteers. However, I recognize it might be hard to implement and the school also works well like this! Knowing that, if you truly want to be useful it is better to prep your classes, have a lesson plan, or even choose a “theme” to explore if you are here for a few weeks. Of course, you will understand how it works and what the kids need after a few days and it will get better with time. Also, even if Poeuy is not very useful when it comes to teaching, you can always ask him what to do or what the kids usually do (they shout the vocabulary a lot, play games etc.). The older kids and teens follow books and have much better structure, so it helps a lot. I think it is mostly harder for the smaller ones, they also have a LOT of energy and it’s hard to have authority over them as volunteers. But after some time everyone will find their balance and how to manage their class. Don’t hesitate to find activities online and print them too. The school is lucky to have a printer (but it’s not used a lot) and the kids love some worksheets, it makes it more interactive and funnier for them too.
Poeuy won’t help you a lot but he is always open to your ideas and he’s giving you a lot of freedom. So be proactive and don’t hesitate to try new things.

Finally, you have a lot of free time when not teaching (before 3/4pm). I enjoyed going to the market nearby, buying fruits, cycling around (there are a lot of bikes at the school that you can borrow), and discovering the surroundings. There are a few very nice cafés. There is a big café/restaurant with great drinks and amazing food - and 40% off for volunteers :) - on the way to the market, another café/restaurant style on the way to the temples and some drink stands at the market. The village is so peaceful, there are no tourists, people are very nice and welcoming. It’s an amazing place!
Poeuy also took us to the floating village one morning and we had an amazing time!! I enjoyed going to Siem Reap during the weekends and visiting the Angkor temples.

If you are thinking of going to this school I can only recommend it!! It is a lot to adapt to at the beginning (the life style, teaching, etc.) but you will have a great experience as long as you stay open-minded and flexible. The kids are so loving and happy to meet new volunteers. What really made the difference here for me is the family, and how much you share with them. It makes it even more special.
I will recommend staying for a few weeks if you truly want to be useful and get adjusted to life there. After 2 weeks I feel like I finally started to form a connection and respect with the kids. I think it is super important for them to have some consistency, even if they love having so many different people too :)

I'm so thankful to Poeuy and his family for welcoming me so warmly into their family. I truly hope I've been able to help a little during my time with you.

I stayed 2 weeks where I found it not only a great exchange but also some sort of retreat from my travels in South East Asia.
I chose this experience because of the amazing reviews in comparison to other schools In Cambodia and they didn't prove me wrong.
Teaching here had its… read more challenges with the language barrier and patience with kids energy but the English level of the kids are all pretty much the same, there are 4 classrooms 2 local teachers and the classes start from 4pm till 7pm.
kids are amazing and so lovable, I was a bit heartbroken to leave them on the second week since only with some time we started forming a little bit of connection and respect. Which I actually found it sad since the reality is that these kids keep on changing faces and people and teachings almost every other week and are forced to say goodbye to so many people.
If you are thinking of going there only for a week trust me is VERY LITTLE. 2 weeks is good but if you want a full experience then i'd really advise to stay more.

Food really deserves a special paragraph haha! bless Poeuy's wife and their kids hands for creating and feeding us such delicious food! the main dish was rice of course but all the rest were absolutely mouth watering. for sure will be remembering with nostalgia the taste of the food we had.

I got to meet wonderful volunteers from around the world, bond with some and overall have an amazing time.
all his daughters are a great gift too to have around. their energy is bright and Siday such a great young lady I really wish her to create the life she so envisions.

Communication was great, Poeuy offered pick up and drop off from and to the airport, gave us a tour of the temples, taught us some history and life of Cambodia. Welcomed us as guests but also as family, I personally felt part of their life for that little bit I was there.

Accommodation was also very much privileged since each of us had their own bedroom. nothing much, nothing less just what's necessary.

the only "negative" thing I'd like to say with no disrespect or misunderstanding is that it can get crowded. As of my understanding they approve all potential volunteers and welcome everyone which is great! but for the overall experience of the volunteers and most importantly for the education of the kids having too many "teachers" in one classroom isn't a great idea since no one can do what's right or what they know efficiently and it becomes a bit chaotic while trying to deliver anything.

Overall I will never forget this wonderful experience, this lovely family and all the amazing kids I got to share my time with :D
