Shane was a fabulous Workawayer. He stayed with us for two weeks in November and made a really significant contribution during his stay. He helped to build and fill the raised beds in our new kitchen garden, built a compost heap surround, did some really high quality external render painting and generally helped out around the house.

I had an amazing 2 weeks with Andrea and Ben. They are both such kind and accommodating people and it was a pleasure staying with them, hearing about all the renovation work at Mariola Secreta and how they have settled into Spain.

The accommodation really is 5 star luxury retreat so it's an amazing opportunity for any Workawayer. Andrea's home cooking is exceptional restaurant quality and so healthy. Her freshly baked bread, which she made every day, was a real treat. I also had the pleasure of joining in with a guest retreat that were there for a long weekend of mountain biking and it was great to share meals with them over interesting and entertaining dinner conversations.
Ben brought me on some mountain bike trails during my time there which was lots of fun. I'd never done mountain biking before but with Ben's selection of bikes and his expert guidance, it was such a great experience. Cycling up and down tracks within the park was really a highlight of my trip to Spain and I think I've discovered a new hobby thanks to Ben.

Andrea and Ben are wonderful people who made my two week stay with them memorable. They are a well-travelled couple who have chosen to leave the corporate world behind and undertake a journey full of courage, commitment and enormous vision. Their ability to restore an old ruin and create such a wonderful home is testament to the great team work
… read more that is required when one undertakes a project of such magnitude. My accommodation and the food that Andrea consistently prepared was first class and I felt privileged to be included at the dining table when other guests were also staying at the house. Both Andrea and Ben were very generous with their allocation of duties and I just loved working with them, whether in the kitchen or outside in the garden and its surroundings. I was able to leave my leave my little mark on Mariola Secreta when I assisted Ben in building 4 raised garden beds from reclaimed timber beams. May they and future guests enjoy the benefits of what was a pleasure to build. During my stay I was introduced to many of Ben and Andrea’s friends and always felt welcome in their company. Andrea’s connection with the local community enabled me to enjoy a day in nearby Bocairent where I was involved in a walk organised by the town hall staff. I certainly was the only Australian involved and understanding Valenciano at times was challenging but the hike up to the Ermito de San Cristo and the culinary experience that followed in the town was fantastic. As the house is situated in a national park, Ben was able to assist me in choosing a safe hiking route to follow that enabled me to witness some of the majestic sites of the area. The views and the sandwiches that I made using some of Andrea’s homemade bread made the day a most enjoyable one. I can’t thank Andrea and Ben enough for their generosity during my stay with them.

In our free time we loved relaxing in the stable (the guest living room) watching TV with Andrea and Ben, and the rewarding feeling of relaxing in the sauna that we built! We even did some off-road cycling with Ben, and took in the amazing views around Mariola Secreta!
Andrea's cooking is exceptional and is the cherry on top of an unforgettable experience, walking into the kitchen at the end of a work day to a delicious lunch was such a great feeling.
They were really flexible with our work schedules, allowing us to have so many experiences in Valencia, Alicante and many more, and even picked us up and dropped us off at the stations when getting the train.

They did an amazing job of restoring around 20 ercol dining chairs, stripping them back by sanding them and then painting/ varnishing. This was not an easy task but the result is fantastic, they did a really high quality job.

… read more have not (yet?) been able to experience the place as a luxury long weekend retreat but have had the pleasure of being subjected to Andrea’s culinary dummy runs. It was in every way a 5-star experience…even for us as work-awayers.
During our stay, our main task involved furniture restauration and we managed to give 20 dining chairs a new lease of live, by stripping them down and applying a classy new two-tone finish. Apart from that we assisted in preparing the large ‘terrace’ and guest-suites for the arrival of their next guests and, in between, also managed to chop up a few downed trees to feed the wood-burners in the coming years. Winters can be cold in the Serra Mariola Natural Park !
Outside work, we thoroughly enjoyed the park, daily forest walks and our tracks into Bocairent, which were challenging but well worth it!
The place is (stunningly) remote so best to keep that in mind 😊

… read more corner sofa around our pool. This is not something they had done before but they were very happy to learn and picked up the skills very quickly. They collected local stone from our land and used it to build the wall. It looks amazing. They also helped out around the house, cleaning windows (even when it was snowing outside!) and cooked a very nice ‘Italian’ one evening. Their English is very good and they were keen to learn new vocabulary and phrases. Thanks guys…you did a great job…that stone sofa will outlive us all !

The work was varied and satisfying. We were able to choose our work (in consultation with Ben and Andrea, of course) and built stone walls, painted various things and helped in the garden. In our free time, we enjoyed the beauty of the national park on hikes or climbing trips, where there is definitely a lot to discover!

The vast and superb local knowledge is imparted with a degree of local pride. I never return to a place that I have been once but here I would love this to be the exception. Our grandchildren (a 3 year old and a 3 month old) were here for some of her stay and she was very helpful looking after them and even started teaching the older one Spanish! We used her language skill to help translate discussions with the builders which was a bonus.
We´d very happily have Emily do a workaway here again in the future.
