5 years ago we were abroad in Ireland as workawayers with 3 lovely families.
Now its time to turn the table :-) We got married, bought an old farmhouse, adopt a dog and two cats, got a baby in 2019 and expecting another one in 2021 <3

Together with Uli's parents, who have 3 big dogs, we got this 300 years old farmhouse in a rural area in Thuringia surrounded by gentle hills.
Two appartements are already renovated, at least one more is to go. There ist also a huge garden and some stables that request our atention (and work).
Main tasks are organizing, get rid of old stuff, set up a stonewall, restaurating old doors, painting old bims ... You should be ready to use your hands ;-)

We, this is Chris (33), Uli (32) and little Oskar (2) live in one appartement. Our workawayers stay in our appartement in their one room, kitchen and bathroom is shared. The grown ups have fulltime jobs during the week and can work on the farmhouse mainly on weekends. During the week its quite busy with getting up, having breakfast, bringing Oskar to the Kindergarten, strat working, having a quick lunch, keep on working, picking up Oskar fron the Kindergarten and enjoying the afternoon and evening as family as much as possible, but there are always many tasky to do on the house.
On the weekends we shifting our time to get our new flat in the house ready.

Ulis parents, Peter (63) and Sabine (62), live in the other appartement with their 3 big dogs (Leonbergers).

We are an open minded family, love to have people around working and chilling together. On the weekends it's not uncommon that friends or family members visit us and lend us a helping hand at the farmhouse.

Well, where to start?

Staying with Chris, Uli, and co. was my first Workaway experience... and I honestly could not have hoped for a better one!

I stayed here for around 2 months and from the moment I arrived until the moment I left I was embraced with open arms and open minds. Chris and Uli are such a lovely couple and always made sure I was… read more comfortable, that I could get to wherever I wanted to go, and that I had enjoyable tasks to perform. Their son Oskar is such a sweet and creative child, he was my little buddy during my stay in Thuringia and never failed to put a smile on my face - I'm missing him already. Their pets made sure there was never a dull moment, whether it was the two kittens chasing each other, one of them sitting on my shoulders, or the dogs craving some love and forgetting how big they are! Uli's parents, Peter and Sabine, were just as warm and welcoming as Chris and Uli, and often asked us to their apartment for lunch, dinner, or for coffee and cake.

Chris and Uli's love for all things Celtic was a great fit for a Scot like me as they'd often tell great stories about their trips to Ireland. In fact, my stay here was filled with stories about their lives and adventures which always kept me entertained. I learned so much about Germany, politics, and so many other topics from Chris - he's a human encyclopaedia with a real talent for telling dad jokes and I'm already missing our lunchtime conversations and attempted comedy sessions. From Uli I learned a lot about compassion, positivity, and childcare - Oskar's face brightens up with a smile every time his mum walks in the room which is so nice to see! They create such a loving atmosphere in their house and it was a real honour to spend some time there.

Anyway, I could type paragraphs about how great everyone there is, but I guess I should describe a bit of the work I had to do and how daily life was.

There is plenty of work to do at the old farmhouse - the place is pretty huge and there was loads of painting, gardening, and building to do. I really appreciated that I was trusted to tackle more long-term tasks like big painting and gardening tasks, but also do some smaller and lighter work like walking the dogs or cleaning up. There are loads of opportunities to work as a team with Chris and/or Uli, as well as in bigger groups when their friends visit - like Chris' dream task of working on his stone wall. However, I also really enjoyed working independently around the grounds - painting beams with some music on or gardening and watching the wildlife - there are loads of birds of prey, deer, and other animals in the area, and I'd definitely recommend a visit to Brehm's museum right beside the house to learn about the local wildlife and global environmental issues.

The family also really appreciated me taking time to walk the dogs, which is also ideal for me as a dog- and nature-lover. All the animals in the house are incredibly well-trained and all individually have great characters - I have left their place feeling more comfortable with cats than I ever imagined I would, and Pukki (the dog) is the best companion to take on a walk. There are a number of beautiful nature walks around the house, making this a great place to go for some peace and quiet. I also loved spending time playing creative games with 'Oskaroni' and becoming the 'straße' for his toy cars to drive on, and his parents also appreciated me looking after him from time to time. He is such a sweet boy and is always making everyone laugh!

The location of their house is also great for visiting some really cool cities with varied histories and interesting cultures. Buses run to the nearest train station, from which I managed to visit Jena, Weimar, Erfurt, and Leipzig. Each of these cities were great to visit and Chris and Uli were more than happy to give me tips on things to do and were very helpful in taking me places if I was unable to get a train or bus.

The meals provided by them were plentiful and delicious. They made sure I tried loads of different delicacies from Germany and would buy any specific food I asked for (which was mainly senf ketchup, ovomaltine, and knusper flocken - not to be eaten together;)). I became a little bit too comfortable with the chocolate cupboard which my waist doesn't thank me for! But the food was great and the meal-times were always lovely with great conversations and occasionally great whiskey or federweiser!

I'm really grateful for how welcomed and comfortable the whole family made me feel during my stay. They are all wonderful people (and wonderful animals) and it was really hard to leave! I will definitely be back to visit in the future, least of all because I can't buy knusper flocken in many other places ;) and I'm really excited to see how the place looks when I come back. It is a great project they are undertaking and one which I was delighted to help with. I really can't speak highly enough of the family, it was wonderful to live in such a warm and loving environment, where I was fully accepted.

So, once again, thank you guys so much for everything!! I'll be back sometime in the future for sure, and I'm looking forward to you visiting Scotland when you're able to! Give my love to Sabine, Peter, and your friends next time you see them! I highly recommend a stay with these guys for anyone wishing to spend some time in Germany and you can feel free to message me with any questions!
