Hi! I'm a fivty five years old French woman ,dog trainer , living with my two dogs (my Belgian shepherd Malinois is trained in the fight against drugs, so no joint smokers ) in a nice house . I make grow my own flowers, plants ,fruit and vegetables . I'm friendly, open-minded and enjoy meeting new people but I also have my habits and enjoy my loneliness . I speak French ,English, and also a bit of Portuguese. So, if you love nature , animals , warm weither and quiet place : welcome ! .
The project here : I need a multi-tasker. It is a new house, whose exterior walls - white - need cleaning, the edges, because it is a house on the ground floor need to be perfectly clean. A total tidying up of the house must be done in order.The outside armoured door and the white pillars need to be cleaned as well. There are large bay windows also ;) .
It's not possible here to visit the island or a part of it in half a day so , our organization is : working a plenty day and get the next day off our working 20 hours for 2 or 3 days then you'll have 4 days free

Madeira: the island of flowers, the pearl of the atlantic, mild climate all year round, crisscrossing the alleys of Funchal at night in sidecar. Enjoy a very fresh poncha, the local drink. Take the Pico do Arieiro ride, considered the most fantastic of the island. Hiking along the levadas, these small canals patiently dug on the mountainside. Immerse yourself in the impressive mass of tree ferns in the Queimadas Forest Park. Take a swim in the natural pools of Porto Moniz. Take a wild ride over the clouds on the Madeiran plateau ...The bus is 5 minutes walking from the house , direct bus to downtown 22 minutes.

I'm looking for a volunteer that is cheerful and good mood.
The assistance requested at home is of the usual order : clean the windows, vacuum cleaner , help to cook sometimes -foreign and local food- etc...,
I provide the breakfast and some items for lunch : you'll have your own drawer and compartment in the fridge.
Be respectul with my dogs , like I explained, I'm a dog trainer and they train and work with me , they can be friendly but they have only one real person they trust in. So I ask my guests : no treat, no food , no order .

I ask a total respect of the house and my privacy .

The bus is 5 minutes walking from the house , direct bus to Funchal more or less 20mn . From downtown to can pick up other buses to go everywhere you want in this wonderful island

you have a very nice comfortable room,also a brand new private bathroom. You have in the kitchen, a shelf in the refrigerator and a large drawer for your food, it would be nice to take care of the storage and the dishes you use.
Of course the nudity, the let go, are undesirable and an outfit for the least (very) correct is required, smokers accepted outside (terrace, deckchair etc. ..)
I only have one meal per day! (alone and late in the evening)
By an other way , I love to cook , it's easy for me to add for a second person , that's what I always do with my guests , I'm not selfish at all and love to have people who 'd like to taste my recipes ! . But it cant be usual to cook two meals /day. I propose to manage that with each of you , separatly, depend of how many hours you can offer , how many days "off" you'll need , I'm not difficult , Of course when I go to the groceries I can also buy some more food for you ...
The bus is 5 minutes walking from the house to go to Funchal ( 20mn +or less).

We will arrange for you to have whole days free so you can enjoy the treasures that border and surroundings offers. If you are sporty do not hesitate to take your equipment, here you can do among other things trekking, biking..... When I go shopping I will of course take you with me

Bàlint, oh, what a beautiful story of trust and friendship. First of all, Bàlint had to come before the Covid, then I receive his sad message : he is requisitioned during all the time of the Covid... In France, we had a custom after the Covid, to invite members of the nursing staff to show our gratitude. As a doctor I saw the opportunity to invite Bàlint ! So just "do nothing" , to be "my" guest. But impossible! It was without counting on his benevolent, warm, sympathetic, always ready to help, to cook in a wonderful way, to explode with his powerful and communicative laughter, his joy of life while being a being gifted with an intense reflection. I'm nearly 30 years older than him but we learned a lot from each other . A smart guy who doesn't take himself seriously and who surprises you day after day.( ;) ) So, Bàlint became more of a co-tenant and soon became a true friend. We have shared wonderful moments together, had our Sunday Brunchs and travelled together almost all over the island. The same moments of admiring silences, the same moments of basking, dozing, in the sun on stones to the sound of the ocean waves. I will never forget these moments of intense complicity. Bàlint also has an extraordinary ability to adapt, not only in terms of life, but also in terms of its linguistic memory. For the first time in 30 years I entrusted him with my dogs (one of which was sick, which made me very anxious), yes, I took advantage of his immense heart to offer myself a week in France and entrust him - barely knowing him - with my house and especially my dogs! I never trusted anyone to take care of my dogs!
I know that Bàlint likes to travel, I know that he would like (he wishes) to explore other parts of the world, you who read me, believe me, contact me (my face book is easy : valerie ducrocq coupe ), Bàlint will be one of the best Workawayer you will have the chance to meet. So, if you're overseas, you have to go back to Metropolitan France, you can leave everything to him, I answer for it. For my part, I keep in touch with the one who has become my friend, I intend to go and see him in the country where he will work in his speciality. And I hope that our friendship will last for many years to come.

First I planned about two weeks to stay there... in the end I left after six weeks!
I arrived on Madeira in the middle of September. The weather was perfect; warm enough, still not that hot. After landing I had to undergo the actual obligatory covid-testing at the airport. Well, I had never believed before, that just arriving on an Island will… read more make me cry that much! :)
After recovering from my injuries, I went directly to Valerie’s home, I tried to stay very careful and protective, kept the social distance in the first evening, but then at night I got my message from the health care system – telling me that I am „negative”, so in the following morning we could finally greet each other properly!
Valerie prepared for me my usual morning chocolate milk, we sat down by the table in the garden, and we made our plans for the time I was going to stay there. On this day another workawayer was still there, she was just about to leave from Valerie. I am so thankful that I could meet that other workawayer, because she also left her own book as a gift, which was full of exceptional ideas, and I had a wonderful time, reading those lines :) Thank you so much! :D

… and about my „workaway” or better said HOLIDAY! :) My task was to take care about Valerie’s two little dogs, Bobby and Fellow (okay, he is maybe not that little) – feeding them, playing with them, and also sometimes when Bobby needed, sleep next to him :) Except of that, I did some cleaning in the house and in the garden, sorted some medication for the animals, and I cooked a lot – which I really liked. Usually we went to the supermarket together, bought fresh fish, meat, mangos, oranges, vegetables… and then we cooked at home. Once I prepared the famous hungarian goulash stew with red wine for Valerie, and the other time she prepared for me an amazing speciality of North of France – beef stew with dark beer. Exquisite! Since then, I also preapered that in Hungary, it was that good!
Valerie also brought 7 different types of French cheese for me to taste. My favourite one was of course the salty one, it was so delicious! I also had the chance to taste Valerie’s favourite – which is a very special cheese for her, remembering memories from her childhood – for me, it remembered the smell of the pathology class from the university, which I told her and we just laughed a lot. I will never forget that orange coloured one! :)
Finally I just ate great cheese for breakfast for at least a week, served with a „small” sip of great French wine of course!

Sometimes I discovered the Island by myself, but most of the time we went to the sights with Valerie together. We did not just visit the main attractions of Madeira, but we also got to know many lovely local people in the Bars and Cafe’s! I have such good memories, when we went to Camara de Lobos for the first time, and we tried „pota” – octopus stew with pepper. The second time we went there - just to eat from that terrific dish - unfortunately the pota-season was over… so we did not have other choice, we had to make our own octopus stew at home! Which tasted even better! ;)

And what else did we visit? Ribeiro Frio, Pico do Areeiro, Fanal, Sao Vicente, Achadas da Cruz, Ponta do Pargo, Calheta, Ponta do Sol, Santana, Machico, Funchal downtown… so many good memories. And the really good part of them, it was that we went there together. The most I enjoyed my time with Valerie together. If I would have discovered the Island just by myself, I would not have had so much fun, joy and love.

I think the real goal of workawaying is to make friendships and stay at a place for a longer time, which allows you to get to know the local culture, the local people (even Eusebio – the mind of Madeira) and also the smaller treasures of the surrounding milieu (for example that beautiful road with so many pink lilies, from where we could also get some example).
All in all, I can say, that all the things I wanted to have on Madeira, I have gotten. I have gotten joy, love and a new friend.

Dans ce cas précis que nous avons… read more vécu , Manuel , connaissant les techniques , était de toute façon très rapide et efficace dans ses interventions. Il a réalisé dans mon jardin des lasagnes parfaites, des supports parfaits pour mes tomates (en forme de tipi ingénieux) , il s'est occupé de refaire complètement ma pelouse (laquelle était dans un état lamentable à cause de mes chiens) , il possède la science de l'utilisation du compost , des plantations... mon jardin après son passage est transformé et magnifique . C'est une personne calme , humble et de grande valeur. Je lui ai fait confiance immédiatement. J'espère qu'il me gardera une place dans son emploi du temps pour revenir . C'est aussi une personne ouverte aux autres, nous sommes allés retrouver un groupe d'amoureux de la nature , ne cultivant que de manière naturelle (bien sûr sans aucune pensée d'utilisation de produit chimique) , cherchant des plants et graines non hybrides et Manuel s'est intégré au groupe sans aucune difficulté . Je suis heureuse de connaître une personne comme lui. Manuel, j'espère que vous reviendrez ... Portez vous bien et encore merci pour ce que vous m'avez transmis et donné.
I would like to warmly thank Manuel, with whom I am always in contact. He introduced me to permaculture, and although very modest, Manuel is an impressive source of knowledge. He hasn't counted the hours and neither have I. We have established a relationship of great trust and mutual respect. In this particular case that we experienced, Manuel, knowing the techniques, was anyway very fast and efficient in his interventions. He made perfect lasagne in my garden, perfect supports for my tomatoes (in the shape of an ingenious tepee), he took care of completely redoing my lawn (which was in a terrible state because of my dogs), he has the science of using compost, of planting... my garden after his visit is transformed and magnificent. He is a calm, humble and valuable person. I trusted him immediately. I hope he will keep a place for me in his schedule to come back. He is also a person open to others, we went to meet a group of nature lovers, cultivating only in a natural way (of course without any thought of using chemicals), looking for non-hybrid plants and seeds and Manuel joined the group without any difficulty. I am happy to know a person like him. Manuel, I hope you will come back ... Please be well and thank you again for what you have passed on and given to me.

Pour une "vieille" solitaire comme moi, la vie quotidienne avec Ieva ne m'a pas pesé du tout et par bonheur nous avions quasiment les même (simples) goûts culinaires ! Elle a su conquérir le cœur de mes chiens et spécialement le plus compliqué des deux qui n'accorde pas sa confiance immédiatement . En ce début de pandémie , nous avons dû affronter ensemble cette peur qui tenaillait tout le monde , Ieva m'a soutenu par sa présence , nous sommes allées au supermarché , parfois je croyais que nous étions comme mère et fille ! En ce qui concerne le côté pratique , bien sûr Ieva était d'une hygiène irréprochable et bien sur a laissé la chambre et la salle de bain parfaitement propre. S'il vous est donné un jour d'ouvrir votre maison à Ieva , ouvrez lui aussi votre cœur , faites lui confiance , vous ne serez pas déçus . Je t'embrasse avec toute mon affection. Porte toi bien ainsi que toute ta famille . It's easy to live with Ieva, always smiling, always ready to help, always in a good mood. Like me, she loves nature, the environment, animals. Gifted with great sensitivity and very mature, it was very nice to talk with her. She is a good person and very simple, I appreciate her professional ambition, rare are the young people with so much determination. For an "old" loner like me, daily life with Ieva didn't weigh on me at all and fortunately we had almost the same (simple) culinary tastes! She has won the hearts of my dogs and especially the more complicated of the two who don't trust people immediately . At the beginning of the pandemic, we had to face together this fear that was bothering everybody, Ieva supported me by her presence, we went to the supermarket, sometimes I thought we were like mother and daughter! As for the practical side, of course Ieva was very hygienic and of course left the bedroom and bathroom perfectly clean. If you ever open your house to Ieva, open your heart to her, trust her, you won't be disappointed. I kiss you with all my affection. Take care of yourself and your family.

Mon expérience en tant qu’hôte de Jana n’a été que bénéfique et je pense , pour nous deux . Bénéfique d’abord sur le plan humain, relationnel, échange de culture, Jana maîtrise parfaitement la langue Anglaise ce qui a facilité nos échanges . Bien que nous ayons 28 ans de différence nous avons vécu en totale harmonie . Je pense que Jana a tout pour… read more elle , la générosité, le respect , la bonne éducation, la tolérance, la joie de vivre , elle aime aussi la paix , elle sait être discrète mais aussi très conviviale. Elle a cependant la tête froide , c’est une personne décidée et volontaire. En peu de temps elle s’est fait des amis de son âge ici , a fait beaucoup de randonnées et du surf ! Nous avons ménagé son emploi du temps de manière à ce qu’elle ait des journées entières libres . A Madère , je considère que c’est indispensable car en une demie journée on ne peut plus faire grand-chose et encore moins de longues et belles randonnées. Jana est pointilleuse sur toutes les tâches à faire ici et je lui en suis reconnaissante . Elle est repartie hier et ce matin , la maison est bien vide : c’est une amie qui est partie . Ce type d’expérience enrichit nos jeunes et bien souvent les aide (si les conditions sont bonnes) à faire le point sur leur vie, à se remettre en question. J’espère humblement avoir pu contribuer à cela en ce qui la concerne. C’est ainsi que je conçois le concept de workaway , pas seulement venir vivre et travailler contre gîte et couvert ! Par chance de vraies relations se créent et cela a été notre cas ! J’espère te revoir vite !

Jana ist in erster Linie auf menschlicher Ebene von Vorteil, was die Beziehungen und den kulturellen Austausch betrifft, und beherrscht die englische Sprache perfekt, was unseren Austausch erleichtert hat. Obwohl wir 28 Jahre Unterschied haben, haben wir in völliger Harmonie gelebt. Diese Art von Erfahrung bereichert unsere Jugendlichen und hilft ihnen oft (wenn die Bedingungen stimmen), eine Bestandsaufnahme ihres Lebens vorzunehmen, sich selbst zu hinterfragen. Ich hoffe zutiefst, dass ich dazu beitragen konnte, was sie betrifft. So stelle ich mir das Konzept der Arbeit vor, nicht nur zum Leben zu kommen und gegen Unterkunft und Essen zu arbeiten! Glücklicherweise entstehen echte Beziehungen, und das war unser Fall! Ich hoffe, wir sehen uns bald wieder!
