We absolutely adored having Tee and Paul stay at our place and help us get motivated on laying mud bricks. Paul’s efforts helping us on the walls were muchly appreciated. Tee worked tirelessly on parts of my garden I wouldn’t have thought I’ve ever do and I am so grateful she chose to give love (weeding, feeding, cardboarding and mulching) to

What can I say, except first class all the way. Kate, Peter and Leyland not only invite you into their home they invite you into their family and treat you with love and generosity. Pete & Kate introduced us to friends and family and involved us in their social life including shouting us to a great music festival and the family Christmas dinner.
… read more The property "avalongalooK' invites you to step back and breathe, located 15 mins drive from Colac and bordered by The Otways National Park this place is special.Paul and I feel privieged to have spent time helping Kate and Pete make there dream comes true. The work is varied and tailored to suit your interest and ability, there is tonnes to do from building projects to gardening. Leyland is a breath of fresh air and 8 year old that spends his time outside getting dirty, loved his enthusiasm for speed. Really do yourself a favour spend some time with these beautiful, generous and lots of fun family.

I stayed for a few weeks with this wonderful family back in 2022 and somehow (sorry!!!) time got away from me and suddenly I've gone two years without leaving a review! It was only now, in late 2024 that I'm looking back over my fond memories with them that I'm realizing I never left a message here...
Most of my time spent with them was helping
… read more out in the garden mulching, composting, netting trees and weeding. The rest was lots of time spent with Kate, Pete, Leyland, Zazu and sometimes lovely Pammy + Bry doing family activities and odd jobs. Unfortunately much of my time here was in the rainy season, so not as much garden work was done as Kate would have liked, and looking back I feel like I should/could have given back to them more, considering how good they were to me. I hope one day I can come back and make up for it!!! Also, maybe I'll be around to partake in a Barongathirst race weekend lol ;)
This was my first-ever Workaway , and my first ever solo abroad experience. At this point I had begun missing my family back in Canada, and I couldn't have asked for a kinder group of people to feel at home with. I miss you guys! Sorry this took so long to write!! Thanks for everything :D

I stayed at Kate and Pete's property in the bush for 2 weeks. My tasks largely involved helping Kate with gardening work, such as cutting back, planting new plants, preparing compost. If I had some technical building skills I would have been able to help Pete with the mud brick house that he was building!

… read more hosts whom I could really connect with. I was invited to be part of the social activities that they were involved in, such visits to friends and family. Leyland was very sociable and a delight to hang out with.
Really enjoyed the lushness of their property. Kate was cultivating several permaculture gardens and I learnt loads about permaculture when helping out in those gardens. Took away a few ideas that I'm excited to implement back home!

… read more refreshing being a bit disconnected for a while, and there was still enough service to check on things and get done what I needed to.
There was quite a range of jobs to do around the place which was super nice, it never felt repetitive. I helped out quite a bit in the garden, such as with weeding, mulching, planting, watering, clearing sticks, picking flowers and helping to create a garden bed. My favourite job was helping work on their new house, hammering in lots of nails and helping Pete to install the rusty iron deck skirting, both to prepare for the arrival of their decking. I really enjoyed that they both would work with me when either one of them was home too.

We met their families and friends and even had an awesome time with them. We learned things like concreting, perma culture, mud brick making (fun thing), motorbike riding, building etc. Also we had a couple of walks and daytrips with them, much bike rides, outside fires and an incredible time with Leyland who is such a great kid.
