As Zhuangzi wrote, "In serene simplicity, all beauty naturally follows."This perfectly describes the feeling of staying in their habitat. I arrived in autumn—trees glowing with color, hills resting in golden light, and at night I could look up through the branches and see the stars. It felt peaceful in a way I had never experienced before. Confucius says, "The benevolent love others."William’s family embodies this spirit completely. They became vegetarians out of compassion for animals, and even more impressive—they make vegetarian food taste incredible! Their Thanksgiving dinner was unforgettable (I still feel full when I think about it—just kidding!). I loved the piano in the music room.William breathes philosophy and music as if they are part of his soul.Laura is gentle and caring, like flowing water. And I became good friends with their daughters Jessica and Jasmine, and their son Evan.Their neighbor Taylor and his family were also wonderfully kind and fun. Meeting another photography lover so far from home made me unexpectedly happy. They value people, relationships, kindness, and beauty.I’m deeply grateful for meeting them!

Wow, where to start! If you’re creative and love nature, animals, community energy, and good food, this is the perfect place. This is a place I am still missing sorely! From the moment I arrived, I felt transported into a colourful world. The room was filled with music, crafts, and warm energy, and there was never a dull moment with wonderful friends constantly coming and going. Everyone in the house has something to teach you. Masa-san shared Japanese traditions, great recipes, and countless lovely stories. Anna-san is a musical magician who can pick up almost any string instrument and make it sound beautiful. Gen-san is incredibly passionate about pottery and wheelchair basketball. During my stay I experienced music ensembles, joined basketball sessions, and enjoyed so many delicious meals. Gen and Anna’s children, along with the pupils who come for the alternative school, were also so bright and curious — we played with Lego, solved puzzles, read cool books, and more. The house itself is incredibly stunning, full of vibrant colours and books, and surrounded by nature. Waking up there every morning brought me so much joy, and of course cuddling their two adorable cats was another bonus. As volunteers we mainly helped with feeding the sheep and chickens, taking Tam for walks, and cleaning the house (hoovering and mopping). There were also various gardening jobs such as weeding and planting. We harvested lots of adzuki, edamame, lettuce, and peppers, and helped cut and drill wood to prepare the shed for insulation. On work days, we worked about five hours on average, but often ended up playing music or going to the onsen, yoga, or other outings instead. I really loved the rhythm of daily life here. I also recommend this place if you want to improve your Japanese, there are plenty of opportunities to practise ☺️ In short, this family is bursting with life. There’s always something going on, everyone is wonderfully kind, and you’ll constantly be invited to join fun and meaningful activities. I could go on forever — there are so many people I’m grateful to. If you’re thinking about it, just go to Sasayama! 🤗🎉

I hadn’t originally planned to stop at Bison Ranch. I was encouraged by a friend of mine who had stayed there and whom I met during another Workaway project. The host, Leo, accepted my last-minute request for a one-week stay. Later he agreed to extend it for another week, so in the end I spent two weeks at the ranch — and I regret that I couldn’t stay longer. I met amazing people there, learned some new skills, and had a great time. Leo is a very warm person with lots of fascinating stories. The surroundings of the ranch are beautiful — a river backwater, mountains. Accommodation and food were both of very good quality, especially for people who enjoy meat. The daily tasks weren’t particularly hard. One especially nice thing was that a wedding took place at the ranch during my stay, which turned out to be an incredibly interesting experience.

Thank you so much to James and Nicola for hosting me! I had an amazing stay! They were always very clear about what needed doing and super flexible to help me make the most of my time in the area. The gardening work was always manageable and they are very kind and generous hosts. Would highly recommend to anyone.

My time in in Oda was absolutely incredible!! 🤩 There are so many amazing people to meet, each with something unique to teach you. Be prepared to make lifelong friends and to have a tough time saying goodbye. From the very beginning, Yocchan was my main point of contact. He’s incredibly easy to talk to: friendly, inviting, and always ready to make you laugh. I can’t thank him enough for making me feel so engaged and welcomed in the community. Our main role was working at the ibasho, a space where people of all ages gather. You can play board games, read manga, have great conversations, and help with small tasks like printing, laminating, or preparing letters. There are also monthly events, such as library visits, crafts, and even Japanese Sign Language workshops. One of the highlights was getting to participate in Oda’s Matsuri and helping sell sweets—an unforgettable experience! Wada-san runs the School, an incredible club where kids learn about nature through hands-on activities. We made butter knives from sakura branches, examined soil life under microscopes, and even drew local flora and fauna. It’s a wonderful experience for anyone interested in teaching or curious about the Japanese school system. Wada-san is also deeply involved in environmental conservation, and we were able to help protect local plants like bamboo, and survey invasive species such as setaka. I’m very new to ecology, but everyone was super passionate and encouraging. It was an invaluable learning opportunity. Oda itself is a fantastic place to stay. There are plenty of shops, so it’s easy to get what you need, and you’re surrounded by gorgeous coastline with beautiful beaches. Nearby Omori, an atmospheric, traditional Japanese town is also a must visit. It has a lovely bakery, delicious gelato, and so much more. And if you enjoy public baths, Sanbeso is a wonderful spot to unwind. In short, Oda is full of life. There’s always something happening, everyone is incredibly kind, and you’ll be invited to join so many fun and meaningful activities. There’s so much more I could say, and so many people I’m deeply grateful to. Don’t hesitate, go to Oda! 🤗🎉

We had the most wonderful 3 weeks with Michiko, and her family! They were all extremely kind, hospitable and generous. Michiko was especially thoughtful and very considerate in researching veganism for Alie and even went out of her way to buy Vegan groceries for her! We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know each of them. We had the opportunity to join in with local cultural activities, which we loved and felt very special to have experienced. We also met many friends in their community who were very kind, generous, and contributed the warm and welcoming attitudes we experienced. Michiko and Yasumori made us some traditional Japanese meals but vegan versions, including Hot Pot and Takoyaki which were both very delicious and special for us to be a part of! We played many fun rounds of board games, spent time interacting with the children even with the language barrier they are very good at trying to speak English and felt we could interact well together. We got helpful some hiragana and language lessons from Michiko, who is a great teacher and always open minded and eager to learn from us too. We shared western meals that we enjoyed cooking for the family, and looked after cute Pierre the puppy. This is a great opportunity for a true cultural exchange where you’ll absolutely get out what you put in and more. Being open minded, and enthusiastic to adapt to a Japanese way of living will help you get the most out of this work away. It was very bittersweet to leave them all and we will cherish all of the memories we made forever and hope to see the family again before leaving Japan next year!

Diti's reputation is well deserved! My first experience in New Zealand and as a Workawayker alongside her was a great pleasure, full of discoveries. She patiently guided me through my various tasks with simple explanations, showing me the work to be done. An excellent cook 😋 Generous, she picked me up at the airport and advised me on buying a NZ SIM card. She introduced me to many beaches and local folk musicians. Open-minded, she agreed to discover my method of relaxation through touch🤭 Involved in many associations, her example is inspiring. Thoughtful to the end, she drove me back to Auckland where she helped me find a hotel near the bus station, which leaves at 9 a.m. the next day 🤩 Mille merci pour cet excellent séjour et cette expérience si enrichissante 🙏✨🍀

We absolutely loved our time with Damon and Pip. Our experience was exactly what we needed without even realizing. Lott learned how to make sourdough and a bunch of new things in the kitchen, and we both learned a lot about gardening (especially what's a weed and what's not in NZ 😂). We appreciate Damon's hospitality and all of his knowledge about NZ- it was the perfect start to our adventure and we can't wait to visit him & Pip again!

The location is excellent and the hostel allowed me to meet people from all over the world, which was very enriching. Milto was very kind and welcoming, as were his parents, and working with Saba was also a pleasant and easy experience. I had to leave earlier than planned because, although the internet is good for general tasks, it wasn’t strong enough for work video calls. Overall, I highly recommend this place. Thanks for the trust and experience.

I was lucky enough to volunteer for a few days in this beautiful place, which does such special work. It's incredible what they are capable of doing without help from the government. They continue their work with help and donations. On the first day you think you won't be able to remember the names of so many dogs, but you leave there knowing many names. Once you understand the routine, everything becomes easier. Cleaning, food, care and affection... All the work is rewarded by the free time spent with the cats and dogs in a true exchange of affection. I have to thank Ala greatly for giving me this opportunity to be part of and help something so beautiful.

My experience at the Hostel was great. My first time volunteering at a hostel, and I felt very comfortable creating in this place that has so much potential. I only stayed for two weeks, but it was enough to make me miss it when I left. The cultural exchange was very enriching, especially in gastronomy, where we could try some Malaysian delicacies, always accompanied by a story told by David. But it's always good to come with a plan B for food. There are always volunteers from other countries as well, which always makes the tours very fun and is sure to enchant. Come discover Penang with the Hostel.

The place where the community lives is one of the most beautiful spots I visited in Canada. There’s a lake surrounded by steep mountain slopes and mysterious alpine valleys that you can explore after paddling across the water in a kayak. During my stay (June), the whole area was full of delicious wild berries. Not far away there’s an Indigenous settlement with a pub that’s a very interesting place to visit. Accommodation was fairly rustic — in tents — but we had a well-equipped outdoor kitchen, and we used a cold nearby stream to keep our food fresh. The food supplies were good in both quality and quantity. Sometimes we were invited to join the larger community meals, though most of the time we preferred to cook for ourselves, since cooking is more fun than doing the dishes :) Peter, the host, is a warm and helpful person. We faced our daily tasks together with Rob, the foreman — an interesting man with unique views on the world, which stand out a bit from the generally hippie-like vibe of the community. To handle the tasks, it helps to have a healthy back and some strength in your arms, though that likely depends on the project phase you arrive during. Overall, my experience at Anderson Lake was very positive, and I highly recommend it!

We had a wonderful week staying with Anthony and Martina. Their place is a little oasis with a huge garden full of plants, trees and flowers – it feels very peaceful. From the first moment we arrived, we felt very welcome and comfortable. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed and friendly, and we quickly felt at home. The work was varied and interesting: we helped with turning compost, weeding, painting, cooking and baking. It never felt boring and we could learn new things every day. Our personal highlight were the game nights, where we got really competitive over UNO and taught each other new games – we laughed so much and had a great time together. On your days off, it’s really easy to visit Granada or go to Laguna de Apoyo – both are perfect for a little adventure, a swim or just a change of scenery. You get three meals a day, which Anthony prepares and plates with a lot of love and care. We can fully and wholeheartedly recommend this Workaway experience.
