    Dec. 9 - Jan. 23 -pet sitting

My name is Julie. I'm a retired public school teacher. I live in a beautiful community in the mountains of northern California and love hosting people from all over the world. Sharing what we know enriches our lives! Despite having a 30 year career in teaching little kids in public school, I have always loved building. I worked in the trades before becoming a teacher. I have completed many projects around my property that reflect the love and care that I have for my environment.

I live in the redwoods of Northern California. There are hiking trails leaving from my front door. My house is in a very quiet area with lots of privacy, quiet and nature. The area nearby is beautiful and the nearest town has a lot to offer despite being small.

I need an experienced house/pet sitter while I travel this winter. You must be experienced and have several positive reviews or references to share. You must be comfortable living in a rural environment with the possibilities of snow, lots of rain, and power outages.

This part of Northern CA can have unpredictable weather in December and January. We are supposed to have an El Nino year so it might be a wet one or we may have snow. My house is a bit isolated. You can't see any other houses nearby. I have friendly and helpful neighbors a short walk up the hill but you may get snowed in and the power may go off for a day or two. If there is a power outage, you will have hot water for taking lovely showers but there will be no heat and my stove in the kitchen is an induction cook top needing electricity to work. There is a wood stove in the garage that you can use to stay warm. How would you feel if you were caught in this situation?

I have four indoor/outdoor cats. You would need to love and care for them. They are independent and very sweet but will need daily attention. They only eat dry food so that part is very easy. They must be fed twice a day. They use a litter box when the weather is bad. This must be cleaned out every day. In addition, you will need to open the cat door each morning and close it up at night.

I have a contractor who does a lot of work for me. He will come to your assistance if anything breaks or stops working, I've been slowly upgrading everything in my house so most things are new and in great working order.

You will have full access to the front section of my house and gardens. You will have a bedroom, bathroom, library, study area and a great room combining the kitchen, dining room and the living room. My house is comfortable. The views and the environment are exceptional!

This part of California is very beautiful. I live in the mountains. I'm about 45 minutes from the ocean and 2-3 hours north of San Francisco. My house is five miles from town. As is typical of the states, public transportation is very limited. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR OWN CAR.

My neighborhood has hundreds of acres of forest that will remain as open space in perpetuity, in order to support wildlife. You might see or hear black bears, mountain lions, bobcats and foxes. Deer visit regularly and will walk up to you begging for food. We might actually have raccoons, skunks, squirrels and chipmunks running around in the house! (I politely ask them to leave!)

This workaway is best for people who can find sustenance in solitude and in nature. You must be secure enough in yourself to spend time alone and to love the natural world.

There is basic wifi available at my house and for some people there is poor cell phone reception although using the wifi for calls is usually pretty good. I also have a house phone that you can use. My house is not a good fit for digital nomads who need fast internet for video conferencing. There is free wifi at the library in town as well as in other locations if you really need it.

We are living in troubled times here in the USA. I need to surround myself with creative, proactive, caring people who know and understand that even the smallest act of good or evil has a profound effect on all of us. I choose kindness, respect and dignity!

Priority is given to people who have been reviewed on Workaway.

I cannot help you obtain a visa.
