    Description

Hi I’m Frank, I was born in Alabama and went to college in Wilmington, North Carolina. I’m an avid surfer, whitewater kayaker and snowboarder. Another passion of mine is permaculture. I’m in charge of a cattle and horse farm that includes a large permaculture project- The goal of the farm is “regenerative agriculture”, which basically means trying to improve the soil while making profit. We are breeding high end genetics quarter horses, cattle and fruit trees. We have an endless punch list of projects at all times and seem to never be able to fully get on top of it all. The farm is about 400 meters from the beach with ocean views from the hilltops, a river running through the middle as well as several creeks and a few hidden waterfalls. It is located within walking distance to a world class left hand point break, called “Pilón”. We are about 9 kms from Pavones, which is the longest left hand point break in the world. Pavones is experts only, but Pilón is great for beginners. This region is very rural however there are many restaurants and a supermarket within a couple kms. The farm is surrounded by jungle with three species of monkeys playing around the house all day. We have several very valuable horses so the position comes with alot of responsibility.

You would be immersed in the group here working with local Costa Ricans that only speak Spanish, so you would have the opportunity to improve your Spanish greatly. They are super sweet, funny and respectful guys that will make you feel at home. You would learn everything there is to know about permaculture. We have hundreds of exotic fruit trees, a large green house and many projects going. You would have the opportunity to learn a lot about horses and cattle. You would not be expected to handle any of the animals, but will be welcome to join in and learn the ropes. I will be there daily working with you. The guys and I will do everything we can to make sure you feel comfortable and enjoy your time here. I hope to take away from this new friends and learn about different cultures and walks of life.

We need help with a little bit of everything. The tasks will vary based on the time of year but the things that are constant are - maintaining the greenhouse and making sure the plants are watered - feeding the dogs and cat - cleaning the horse stables (hardly any smell at all) and making sure they’re stocked with hay/clean water - checking on the food forest biweekly to make sure the fruit trees are healthy and happy as well as cutting back banana plants and support species - weed eating in the pastures - cleaning of the rancho (palm roof pavilion) and house - turning the compost in the bins. Depending on the time of year we will be making path ways and planting trees. The plans are to make a massive food forest with thousands of trees over the years to come. We have three full time employees that will always be around and working on various things. You will be guaranteed to learn a lot about permaculture, horses and cattle working with us here.

  • Hébergement

    Hébergement

The accommodation is a rustic wooden house with a comfortable bed, a fan and screens. The kitchen is in the open outdoor ‘rancho’. The bathroom is a separate open air structure with hot water in the shower. I am there most of the time and will always be able to help with rides to the store to get food and when I’m not there my employee, Olger, will be there to help with any logistics. There is a bike for the volunteers to use to get around. The farm is about 2 kms from the nearest supermarket. There’s a longboard for the volunteers to use. About a 20 minute walk down the beach there’s an excellent beginners wave and another 20 minutes walking up the point gets you to a world class left hand point break, Pilón. You will be provided with food in the kitchen for three meals a day and hopefully we can cook some meals together and share some cultural exchange. There is a green house full of delicious organic veggies that we will all be sharing. I will always do my best to accommodate each person’s needs.

The area of Pavones is extremely safe as well as it is very rural and there’s not many options for public transport around town however there will always be a bicycle available. In your off time you will be able to enjoy the many world class waves the area has to offer. Part of what is needed in the farm is having someone there consistently for security purposes. Also we ask that you not bring any locals back as it is a private farm with a lot of valuable tools that could get stolen.
