This was my boyfriend and I's first workaway and we couldn't have asked for a better experience! We absolutely loved working on and staying in the castle - it's a super magical experience and the grounds and castle are just beautiful! We mainly worked on clearing weeds in the garden, stripping and repainting a window, and other smaller

Isa is truly one of the most vibrant people we have ever met - she has an ability to connect with anyone and brightens every room. You can feel she genuinely wants to hear about and understand your worldview and experiences, and we enjoyed hearing all her stories as well! She's also extremely caring and if you're looking to experience something in the area, she will help you make it happen! My boyfriend and I had never seen baby cows before, and upon hearing this she took everyone to the farm to see them :) Aside from that, she also organized group activities like karaoke/movie nights which were a great addition to our experience, and also had mountain bikes available for us to bike around Kalkhorst (which has some of the most picturesque fields we've seen!).
We also were lucky enough to join when there were 4 other workawayers at the castle, which made for a great time both working and in the evenings. It was a great experience making new friends from around the world and laughing together over tea! Isa's dog was also a very cute addition to the group and we loved giving him pets during our breaks. All in all, we absolutely loved our time at the Schloss and are excited to see how the renovations continue!
Lily and Conen visited and helped for one week and it was a pleasure. They took on the wide variety of tasks handed to them, ranging from clearing/sorting out rooms, moving stuff, sanding old paint off windows, painting them and working in the garden to pull out weeds. My three and a half weeks in Kalkhorst were truely wonderful, I couldn't have dreamt of a better first Workaway experience.
Isa immediately showed she trusted me with the tasks, but she was also very prone to explain anything and very easy to communicate with. She cared for us to have fun while working, and if any of the workawayers were bored
… read more doing something she would come up with alternatives so the experience would still be enjoyable, which made the whole working experience absolutely great.
But the rest of the stay was also wonderful. Isa is such a joyful, genuinely enthusiastic and interested person. When the opportunity arised, she would show us every corner of the castle, make us visit the familial farms, include us in baumarkt trips, propose us to join for a run, etc. On a lot of evenings she would join the workawayers either for dinner or for a cup of tea and a discussion. We had a lot of very interesting ones! Each one of the volunteers could feel included in the "family". Isa has a rare aura of benevolence, acceptance, and happiness, that, coupled with her infinite energy, makes each day brighter, lighter, and happier.
I could go on forever writing positive feedbacks on Isa and on the property (which is absolutely stunning by the way). It was an 11/10 experience!
Thanks for everything!
Louis has the perfect hands-on/ positive 'I have never done it, so I think I can do it' mindset with which he took on new tasks as sanding the wooden floors, as well as painting, lacquering, pulling blackberries in the garden, fixing the roof, cleaning and moving stuff. Tim stayed with us for 3 weeks and it was very good to have him! He's easy to communicate with, follows through on commitments and is reliable. This was my fourth Workaway, and I'm happy to report that I had a wonderful time at the Schloss in Kalkhorst - it's a great workaway experience that I would 100% recommend to anyone else (including first-timers).
First of all, Isa, the lovely Lady of the Castle, is one of the most joyful host you've ever met, always sparkling with enthusiasm. We
… read more got along very well, and to me definitely this motivated me to put my all in the work I was doing - because I was contributing to a worthwhile project! Isa has big plans for the Schloss, and it was great to be able to do my part. I also had the good fortune to spend my time working alongside several other workawayers who were there at the time (at one point there were six of us, which was great!), and we had a blast doing renovation together. It made for a great atmosphere.
Most of the work while I was there revolved around renovating several rooms in the beautiful old Schloss (built in the 1850s), but there was a wide variety of tasks that you could do. Isa is always willing to accommodate workawayer preferences, whether that is doing garden work outside, or filling literally every nook and cranny with acrylic kit. (Vegetarian) foodstuffs that you can cook are provided regularly and often we all cooked and had dinner together.
Next, the landscape is gorgeous. You are in the middle of the North-German countryside, and while it may be far removed from the hustle-and-bustle of the city, I quite loved the calm solitude. Especially as the spring weather was rolling in while I was there, it was quite nice to walk around the large garden and enjoy the sounds of nature. Another one of my favorite things was playing piano in one of the cozy rooms of the Schloss in the late afternoon, when the sun was warming that side of the house.
All in all, I had a really great time. I met new friends, had great conversations, and it felt like I got to contribute to a worthwhile project that I am sure will turn out fantastic when the renovation is done! I would absolutely recommend this workaway to anyone who seeks to do some manual labor in a serene environment, learn some new skills, and live for a while in a beautiful historic Schloss.
Thanks for everything Isa, and good luck with the project!Feedback

I stayed at the schloss for 6 weeks, and it was truly an amazing (first) experience!
Most of the work I did was inside helping renovating first a staircase and then multiple rooms which will be used for hosting events / bnbs. This typically involved demolition of old floors, sanding back and refinishing the wood as well as cleaning / painting
… read more for the finishing touches. Isa gave the freedom of choice each day for which tasks we wanted to work on (and could even work outside if we wanted). None of the work was unreasonable or too hard, and I had great company to help get it done with both Isa herself and the other workawayers as we listenedd to music / sang songs or just chatted and joked while working. The amount of other workaways varies depending on schedules of course, so there may be times there is only 1 or 2 workawayers, but for a week we had 6 of us and there was more than enough space and rooms to accomodate.
Outside of the work, Isa is also just a perfect host who is extremely accomodating whether that be with scheduling or the tasks. She also goes out of her way to make sure everyone is comfortable and having a good time. She also went out of her way to cook dinner for us on welcome / farewell dinners which was very appreciated. We spent time together outside of the work, like movie nights, trips to Lübeck and the hardware store, and trips to the farms to see the baby cows! The castle is in a fairly rural spot, but bikes are provided and the nature / scenery is really beautiful and relaxing to just go for a walk and lose track of hours (and even days).
Overall I definitely recommend, not many people can say they've lived in a castle :D 10/10Laissé par l'hôte pour le workawayer (Cohen)
Is it possible to give Cohen a 6 starred review instead of 5? Because what a pleasure it was to have Cohen for 6 weeks at the castle! From throwing things outside the window, spending hours working the Flex (tool), vacuuming to get the dust away, lacquering the wooden beams for life and painting skirting boards over and over again: he is not

In short, Cohen is absolutely recommended!
In short, only positive words

What a wonderful stay in Kalkorst :)
I’ve been here with my friend for 2 weeks. It was so nice to be there, even the other people that we met in the Castle !
Isa is a very authentic and kind person, she was always carrying about us and what we needed. We felt like we were at home with her, but in a huge castle ;)
The place is so pretty, a little
… read more bit cold but still nice. If you want to be immersed in Nature, it’s perfect. Also, this permits us to speak more with Isa, and create a fantastic story with her. You can take bikes, ride to the sea and make unique experiences.
The work was a little bit hard sometimes, but never too much, and we made it in a very nice mood (music, tea, laughs, help..). So, the time was flying so fast, too fast… also, Isa was trusting us for the work, it was not like a job, but like an help for friend.
For sure we recommend this Workaway at 100%.
Thank you very much Isa for welcoming us into these amazing conditions, we made memories for life. Hope to come back again for news stories and new laughs with you ;))) thank you thank you thank you !

Lou was together with her friend Tanguy and they both brought nice, vibrant energy into the house. Looking back at our two weeks, I am happy that we were able to share time together, as well as sing to songs while working, laughing about stupid things and exploring the region through runs.

It was our first workaway experience with my friend and we are very happy! (We were two friend comming to meet Isabelle)

The accommodation provided is very practical and comfortable, whether for a short or long term. You share the same cooking and food as other people and that's great. It allows you to have a lot of interesting discussions and learn more about each other's culture.
About the day jobs, Isabelle was able to find us work and initiate us to do lots of new things that we never did (even she sometimes ahah) while leaving us free time to do what we wanted (running, walking, cycling, going to the beach,...)
We can only recommend staying in Isabelle's beautiful home. She is a fantastic person and very welcoming.Laissé par l'hôte pour le workawayer (Tanguy)
Tanguy is the perfect combination between making jokes/having fun and working hard to get the job done. Taking on tasks independently, without any prior experience, was not a problem at all. During the days that I was there, my tasks were to remodel a room in the Castle so that it would be habitable again and we also worked in the garden with Isa, having a good time with very interesting talks.

I was lucky enough to have a birthday during my stay and they made me feel like family. We had a beautiful day that I will never forget.
Every afternoon I went for a walk in the forest and some days I also went for a walk to the sea, which is very close.
Thanks to Isa and her beautiful and warm family for welcoming me and I hope I can visit them again soon. I am also sure that we will meet Isa again because she is one of those people who fill you with joy when you see them. See you soon! Flor

Stayed at a castle for two months, or more. Easy to loose sense of time there.
The castle itself is nestled in a forest with endless paths for walking or cycling, and a rather short bike ride away from the north coast. And well, frankly, a bike ride away from anything since the cycling infrastructure in the area as a whole is top notch. And to
… read more complement that, there are a couple really good MTB's for Workawayers to use and I really did take advantage of 😁
Within the castle there's a ridiculous amount of space and we had a whole 'apartment' within a castle for Workawayers and residential artist(s) to use. During my stay, we had a private room with double bed etc, windows facing a lush sunrise. So it's relatively communal, yet with a lot of space and freedom to be by yourself, do your thing etc.
Tasks-wise, by my own preference, I was primarily involved in sorting and renovation side of things. Overall, there's something to do for anyone, regardless the skill level. From taking care of a garden park, or raking leaves, to floor installations if you like. Point is, there's been given a lot of freedom for own proposals, ideas, ambitions etc, along with trust and freedom to manage our own tasks at our own pace. So, suitable for proactive types I guess.
The communication etc was primarily with Isá, who's ridiculously energetic and positive creature 😁 She can be there singing cheesy pop songs by herself and switch to socio-cultural anthropology comparison between eastern and western philosophies, to planning out types of wood flooring.. back to singing goofy pop songs, casually 😁
All-in-all, an unique and authentic project, where Workawayers are involved as equals in creating the place, whatever direction it may lead.
*Shout-out to Cobus & 'The Mom' ✌️😁
Cheers,
Anton
