Hello and welcome!
We are Florence and Gabriel, a family living simply and sustainably on Mfangano Island. Our homestead is a peaceful place focused on permaculture, community support, and personal growth. We care deeply for the land, grow food organically, and share what we learn with the local community.
You do not need to be Christian to stay with us. Everyone is welcome with kindness and respect. Any faith-based activities are optional.
🌿 What we do
Our homestead is guided by three values:
Stewardship – caring for the soil, plants, and animals responsibly
Hospitality – sharing daily life, meals, and learning together
Education & Empowerment – building practical skills for a better future
🤝 How you can help
We appreciate volunteers with open hearts and a willingness to learn. Current projects include:
🏫 Community Training School
We are setting up a small training center for the local community, offering skills such as:
Tailoring
Beauty and wellness
Basic computer and digital skills
We especially welcome help with fundraising, grant writing, administration, or ideas for sponsors.
🌾 Organic farm & poultry
Planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables
Caring for chickens (feeding, cleaning, basic care)
General farm maintenance
No special skills are required — we are happy to teach.
🕊️ A typical day
Morning (3–4 hours): farm work, poultry care, or school-related tasks
Lunch: shared home-cooked meal
Afternoon: free time to rest, explore, read, or journal
Evening: quiet time, shared dinner, conversation or music
We work at a relaxed pace and value balance, learning, and mutual respect.

Life here is a joyful blend of service, learning, and fellowship. Guided by our local church leaders and community members, volunteers experience the rich traditions of Mfangano Island while connecting with people from around the world. 🙏💛
You’ll have opportunities to:
Cook local meals alongside our students, church members, and family, sharing recipes and stories rooted in culture and faith.
Learn the local language while engaging in everyday community life.
Join in worship and fellowship with our church family, experiencing music, prayer, and communal celebrations.
Enjoy lakeside sunsets and nature walks, reflecting on God’s creation and the beauty of community.
This is more than cultural exchange — it’s a true sharing of hearts, faith, and knowledge. Volunteers leave not only with new skills but with lasting friendships, spiritual growth, and a deeper appreciation for the ways God works

Right now, we’re working on several projects that blend stewardship, innovation, and faith:

Help us feed and tend our poultry house as we develop a sustainable system that blesses both the chickens and the soil.
We see this as part of God’s call to nurture creation with wisdom and compassion.
🐟 Aquaponic fish pond in our food forest
Join us in building a system where fish, plants, and water work together in harmony — a living picture of God’s design for interdependence and abundance.
🍌 Banana circles & keyhole gardens
These simple, beautiful systems help us recycle water, build soil, and grow food naturally. It’s hands-on, joyful work that reflects the creativity of our Creator.

Volunteers are welcomed into a peaceful, faith-filled home where we seek to honor Christ in our hospitality. You’ll stay in a comfortable shared house with a kitchen, shower, latrine, and a cozy living area where we gather for prayer, reflection, or evening fellowship. 🙏✨
For those who enjoy quiet time with the Lord, there is a peaceful spot in our food forest — perfect for journaling, worship, rest, or simply listening to God’s voice in the beauty of creation. 🌳🕊️
Our homestead is surrounded by trees and close to the lake, offering stunning sunrise views and a refreshing place to swim or unwind after the day’s work. WiFi is available nearby for those who need to stay connected.
We normally host two or more volunteers and provide three wholesome meals each day:
🍲 Breakfast and lunch lovingly prepared by our church community,
🌿 and dinner cooked together with our family, often using fresh produce from the garden.
Meals are a time of fellowship, gratitude, and sharing stories of what God is doing in our lives.

🌴 Weekends & Christian Community Life
Weekends are your time to rest, enjoy nature, or explore the island — walk by the lake, visit local villages, or find a quiet place for prayer and reflection.
On Sundays, we join our church family for a special Food Exchange Fellowship — a joyful gathering where volunteers help prepare a community meal using ingredients from the farm. There’s always laughter, worship, singing, and a deep sense of togetherness. 🎶💒
This rhythm of work, rest, and worship helps volunteers experience the fullness of Christian community.

🌿 Mfangano Island – God’s Creation to Explore
Mfangano Island is truly a paradise for nature lovers and those who delight in God’s creation. The island is alive with birdsong, lush landscapes, and scenic peaks offering stunning panoramic views — a daily reminder of the beauty and majesty of our Creator. 🕊️✨
Our homestead is on the east-south side of the island, blessed with the morning sunrise. There’s much to see and experience on other parts of the island, as well as on nearby islands, especially on your days off.
Traveling around the island is part of the adventure:
We walk, ride motorcycles, or take small motorboats (cars are no longer used here!)
Motorboats can transport volunteers to different points along the shore
For the adventurous, it’s possible to walk the entire ring road around the island in one day — a rewarding way to witness the Creator’s handiwork from sunrise to sunset 🌅
Whether you seek quiet reflection in nature, birdwatching, or active exploration, Mfangano Island offers abundant opportunities to connect with God’s world and recharge your spirit.
