For anyone currently in the UK, I would be happy to meet and share places I love

  • Descripción

Hello! My name is Taeya, and I am 25 years old, from and living in the Southern countryside of the UK. I am using Workaway to travel sustainably and learn through working and meeting new people.

This summer, I will finish my bachelor's degree in ecology and wildlife conservation, and so I am now looking for work to utilise the skills and knowledge I have worked on for the last four years. Any jobs in conservation, eco projects or ecology-based roles I would love to be a part of. I have developed a lot in this time, such as fieldwork skills, species identification and survey skills. I greatly care for our natural world and for doing all we can to take care of it, which is a main motivator for joining this community.

My most recent trip was a marine biology module for my studies. For this, we travelled to Cape Town in South Africa, where I learnt to dive, received my open water certificate, conducted a research project, developed marine survey skills and presented findings at a public symposium. My dad and his side of the family are from SA, and so I was really grateful for this opportunity as I had never before been able to visit.

My last workaway host, I am so grateful to have met. I had a wonderful time getting to know her, sharing meals, practising Qi gong, looking after the garden, chickens and cats in her wonderful corner of the world.

I have travelled solo a number of times, with great experiences to recall! A place close to my heart is Goa, India, where I completed my first 200-hour yoga teacher training. The people I met and friends I made I remember fondly. These teachings helped me deepen my own practice, and I would love any opportunity to share this with others.

A bit more about me - I am the eldest sibling of 3. I have had at least 2 pets in the family home my whole life, from cats, dogs, chickens, to guinea pigs, a snake, a hedgehog or a horse. I am spiritual and open to religious beliefs. I love the outdoors, wildlife spotting, walking, exploring, swimming, hiking, yoga, gardening, music, and so much more. I enjoy playing, painting, crafts, flowers, cooking or reading a good book. I can be very social and greatly appreciate connecting with others. I can sometimes be reserved at first, but when spending time with others, I love to dance, play games, share company over meals, talk, share practices, or coexist in any form.

I have a range of education and skills I can put to use. I have an early years education diploma and experience working with children from 4 months old to 10 years and up in both nursery settings and in family homes. Working with families, I have also been a happy housesitter and pet sitter many a time. I have experience working in health care as a carer in older adults' homes during the COVID pandemic and other private roles helping with cleaning, assisting and accompanying. I have worked in hospitality, both front of house and back of house. I believe I am good at working in high-pressure environments because of this. This, as well as much time spent in the kitchen at home, taught me how much I love to cook and to feed people and how much I love good food. I try to consume less meat for ethical and environmental reasons, preferring vegetarian, vegan or pescatarian dishes, but I am flexible. In terms of green thumbs, I have helped plant hedgerows for a local charity and have worked for a local river keep, mowing the lawn, trimming along the river edge, scything invasive river weed and weeding flower beds. As well as this I have spent much time in my own and other people’s gardens looking after patches and plants. I like to think I can build and fix pretty much anything I set my mind to (even if I am sometimes a little over ambitious), I have built raised beds from pallets, designed and built a bed frame for my car, fixed up wooden ottomans and fitted new headlights and bonnet latches on my car. I believe a lot of jobs like this can be learned from the readily available resources, which is people and the internet (with enough focus and willpower).

Hopefully, if we cross paths, I can share more. Until then, thank you for reading.

In the last few years, I have been trying to teach myself French (poorly). Whilst I have beginner's knowledge, I would like to learn to speak French fluently, so if the opportunity should arise to be taught, I would take it! I am also interested in learning any other languages!

  • Que habilidades tienes?

I have mentioned some above, but here is some more! I would be happy to call and chat about how I can be the best help!

I would say I have a range of skills to offer, with my first being that I am a very fast learner, especially with practical or hands-on work. I recently volunteered with The CPRE Countryside Charity, helping plant hedges for the Hampshire Hedge Project. The aim of the project is to increase connectivity of habitats, biodiversity and mitigate climate change for the area. In this experience I learnt how to carry out hedge planting on small-large scales and I practiced working independently and in groups. It was very rewarding and enjoyable work.

I also have lots of work volunteering, at my local hospital, assisting with meal times on the wards and in places like a trail running festival in the Lake District UK.

Growing up in my household taught me many things such as how to paint and decorate, clean well, garden, fix furniture, clothing or my car, cook and so much more. I would say generally I'm a 'jack of all trades' in that way. I also have experience caring for animals/pets (dogs, cats, guinea pigs, horses, hedgehogs, geckos).

I would be happy to teach yoga and help or lead in guided meditations or walks. I have practiced for over 10 years and have a 200hr certificate specialising in Yin Yoga. I would also be confident in leading groups for other various activities.

I love being creative, making bouquets, drying or pressing flowers, painting, drawing, collaging and so on. I can do that with others or for a project.

Based on experience I have working with children and older adults, I learnt how to bring my empathy, care, communication, and interpersonal skills into a profession. I also worked in hospitality for many years, teaching me a lot about working in teams or individually, working under pressure, paying attention to detail and being flexible in your role. All in all, I have a very can-do attitude, a lot of experience, I am a flexible, strong and hard worker and care greatly now about working for the outdoors.

Because of my studies, I am developing a good knowledge of ecology and conservation topics. For example, land designation, planning, creating ideas for sustainable/eco projects, and assessing the importance of an area of land. These are all things I would love to help with given the chance, but again anything hands-on or creative based is great too.

I have been self-taught and continuously growing my knowledge and skills with species ID (birds, plants, fungi, insects, mammals). I can read maps and navigate moderately well.
