Hello hosts (and other Workawayers!)

I am Edison Miguel from the Philippines. I have a business degree from a top university in Manila, Philippines.

I have been traveling and workawaying for more than a year now.
I love teaching and learning languages.

What motivates me?
I feel motivated whenever I can travel, meet new people, and share new experiences with others. I also love helping people and sharing my skills. I love meeting people who share the same positive energy as mine and just here to enjoy life and to be kind to everyone. :)

What brings me happiness?
Kind people, new experiences, reading books, Vietnamese food (or any food in general), sincere conversations, jazz.

In another life, I'd want to be a (struggling) surrealist painter, a (struggling) jazz trumpeter, or a (struggling) contemporary poet.

There are lots of things that I can say but frankly, I'm more interested in knowing more about you :)

Current interests:
permaculture, plant-based cooking, woodworking, and Amor Fati.

I've done 15 workaways now in Portugal, Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Japan, and Israel.

I am an English and Tagalog tutor. I love to teach languages! I'd dare say I speak French and Spanish fluently. My Italian is getting there, albeit crawling. My Mandarin Chinese is promising (promisingly lacking its vocab), while my Russian is in an uphill battle. My Portuguese (Portugal) is sometimes more Spanish than Portuguese. And currently, I'm trying to learn German and Czech.

-I can also share anything about business! I owned a successful small business before but unfortunately I have to hand it over to my brother when I left the Philippines.

-I can share my skills with subjects such as: social media marketing, copywriting, Instagram and Facebook ads, cold calling, etc. (since I have a business degree from the [arguably] best university in the Philippines, and a real experience in opening up a business). I can make ads and posters.

-I also love photography! Mainly street photography. I have a portfolio and I can share that skill as well. (I can show you my Instagram profile where I love to share my street photos)

-I love filmmaking and video editing. I am adept in using Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Lightroom. I can make a film about your workaway profile.

-I am an English and Filipino teacher online. I was an English teacher assistant in a school in Madrid handling classes for children ages 3-16. I love playing with children in our school and to help them learn English in a fun way! (I can show you my Italki profile so you can see my 100 students and their very gracious feedback from our lessons)
I taught English to German adults as well (ages 40 )

-I know how to create a workout plan, whether weightlifting or calisthenics.

-I did odd jobs when I was younger such as waiter at a restaurant, real estate sales, selling sandwich and lemonade, math tutor, and market researcher.

-I used to rent out condominiums in Manila, I "flip" them, renting it bare then raising its value by adding furniture and such then renting them out for profit.

- I can do "business" in English, French, Spanish, Tagalog, and Portuguese.

Interests:
I read a lot about business and philosophy.
I am learning more about art (paintings) and jazz musicians/bands.
Religion - any, but recently, Taoism and Buddhism.

I love reading different books! With topics such as philosophy, business, biography, religion, and non-fiction.
I also love art specifically paintings (surrealism, 17th century Dutch golden age (!!) , Magritte, Rembrandt, Rubens, Caravaggio)
I experienced the value of meditation and yoga.
I write -- when life forces me to write.
I know quite a lot about nutrition and working out. (fasting, calisthenics, power lifting). I firmly believe that fasting is still underappreciated.
I am an avid learner. I am curious about almost anything and things that I do not know pique my curiosity the most! :)

I'm fortunate to have already done 15 Workaway experiences. I'm glad I lived with hosts who are entirely different. I was able to learn heaps of skills, lived their unique ways of life, and connected with these immensely interesting people in an authentic and profound way.

I had a great experience working here. The traditional Japanese inn is so beautiful and calming. There's an onsen and the garden and landscape are beautiful. I really thank Vanni and Virginia for welcoming me in their home. I learned a lot from them. They're generous people and they made sure I was very comfortable there.
Tasks:
I mostly helped Vanni with their didactic activities with the kids. The kids come to their farm to learn about farm life, making bread, about animals, about the… read more history of the place, about how plants grow and the significance of the color green in nature. I learned a lot about these things and Vanni also shared a lot of his knowledge about different things. I also helped with gardening - taking care of the vegetable garden and clearing and cultivating the soil to create a new garden. I also painted some chairs. I cooked lunch for them once and I'm happy they liked it. We mainly spoke in Italian so it really helped me improve my Italian and my knowledge of their interesting culture.
Location:
Their place has a good location. It's away from the busy city but still very close to Mantova. I used their bike a lot to visit beautiful villages and also to bike to Mantova. Vanni also drove me to Mantova and they encouraged me to visit Verona. There are nice bike trails and beautiful walks to do around Marcaria.
Accommodation:
They gave me a big room and I'm more than happy staying there. Nights were warm and tranquil.

[ITALIANO]
Ringrazio davvero Vanni e Virginia per avermi accolto nella loro casa. Ho imparato molto da loro. Sono persone generose e hanno fatto in modo che mi trovassi molto bene lì.
Il Lavoro:
Per lo più ho aiutato Vanni nelle attività didattiche con i bambini. I bambini vengono alla loro fattoria per imparare la vita in fattoria, a fare il pane, gli animali, la storia del luogo, come crescono le piante e il significato del colore verde in natura. Ho imparato molto su queste cose e anche Vanni ha condiviso molte delle sue conoscenze su diverse cose. Ho anche aiutato con il giardinaggio - prendendomi cura dell'orto e ripulendo e coltivando il terreno per creare un nuovo giardino. Ho anche dipinto alcune sedie. Una volta ho cucinato il pranzo per loro e sono felice che gli sia piaciuto. Abbiamo parlato principalmente in italiano, quindi mi ha davvero aiutato a migliorare il mio italiano e la mia conoscenza della loro interessante cultura.
La posizione della fattoria:
Il loro posto ha una buona posizione. È lontano dalla città trafficata ma comunque molto vicino a Mantova. Ho usato molto la loro bicicletta per visitare bei villaggi e anche per andare in bicicletta a Mantova. Vanni mi ha anche accompagnato a Mantova e mi hanno incoraggiato a visitare Verona. Ci sono belle piste ciclabili e belle passeggiate da fare intorno a Marcaria.
L'alloggio:
Mi hanno dato una grande stanza e sono più che felice di stare lì. Le notti erano calde e tranquille.

The whole volunteering experience with you has been great, but knowing you as a person brings even more value to my life. You're the most smiling and warmest European I've met so far!

Marie is such an interesting person. With all her… read more travels and experiences, one can learn a lot by just talking to her.
No wonder she has many friends! She's generous in every sense of the word. It didn't feel like she's a "host", but rather a good friend with whom I was living with.
I admire what she has achieved in the farm, I called her a 'visionary' before and i think it's very fitting.

Some of the tasks were picking pumpkins, maintaining the garden, painting the wood, and cutting trees and grass.
The environment in the farm is very chill and laid-back. The scenery is beautiful. And the view of the stars at night is unparalleled.
One Saturday we went to the market in the center of Bagnères-de-Bigorre and it was very enjoyable because there were tons of stalls selling diverse local food.
Marie cooks so well. I was privileged to be able to taste her healthy and sumptuous French dishes, as well as her beautiful pastries. Her meticulously made macarons, I believe, could make its case for being one of the best in France!

Anyway, I hope I bump into you in the future, whether in Sichuan with the pandas or in Moscow with some vodka. :D

Tout d'abord, Marie, je tiens à te remercier de m'avoir acceptée comme bénévole et de nous avoir traités comme une famille.
Toute cette expérience de workaway avec toi a été formidable, mais te connaître en tant que personne apporte encore plus de valeur à ma vie. Tu es l'Européenne la plus souriante et la plus chaleureuse que j'ai rencontrée jusqu'à présent !

Marie est une personne tellement intéressante. Avec tous ses voyages et ses expériences, on peut apprendre beaucoup de choses rien qu'en parlant avec elle.
Pas étonnant qu'elle ait beaucoup d'amis ! Elle est généreuse dans tous les sens du terme. Je n'ai pas eu l'impression qu'elle était un "hôte", mais plutôt une bonne amie avec qui je vivais.
J'admire ce qu'elle a réalisé dans la ferme, je l'ai déjà qualifiée de "visionnaire" et je pense que c'est très approprié.

Certaines des tâches consistaient à cueillir des citrouilles, à entretenir le jardin, à peindre le bois et à couper les arbres et l'herbe.
L'environnement de la ferme est très détendu et décontracté. Le paysage est magnifique. Et la vue des étoiles la nuit est inégalable.
Un samedi, on est allés au marché dans le centre de Bagnères-de-Bigorre et c'était très agréable parce qu'il y avait des tonnes de stands vendant des produits locaux variés.
Marie cuisine si bien. J'ai eu le privilège de pouvoir goûter à ses plats français sains et somptueux, ainsi qu'à ses magnifiques pâtisseries. Ses macarons méticuleusement réalisés pourraient, je crois, prétendre à être l'un des meilleurs de France !

En tout cas, j'espère te croiser à l'avenir, que ce soit au Sichuan avec les pandas ou à Moscou avec de la vodka. :D

Hi Antonello. First of all, thank you for accepting me as a workawayer. I had lots of learning and meaningful encounters during my stay there. I will provide some details regarding my stay to aid future workawayers, but as for my stay, overall I enjoyed it and would definitely come back if the circumstances would allow. It is not a perfect… read more workaway experience but the value I got from my stay there definitely and immensely outweigh the issues that come to mind.

Pros:
- I was able to meet a lot of international people -- both volunteers and guests. This alone made my stay meaningful and incredible. Everyday I got the chance to talk to different people from different countries and backgrounds, to learn from them and to share culture and perspectives.
- The food is good and healthy.
- The farm is beautiful and peaceful. I will miss the beautiful landscape of Sora and the amazing star filled sky every night.
- A great opportunity to learn Italian with Giuseppe (Antonello's father). Giuseppe helps the volunteers cook every lunch and dinner. He speaks solely in Italian to volunteers so it is a great way to immerse oneself in Italian.
- Volunteers can participate for free in different activities with the guests such as going to the lake, hiking, horseback riding, yoga classes, etc.
- Sora is beautiful, even though it takes 40 minutes to walk from the farm to the city, it's a beautiful city.
- I learned stuff like how to use power tools such as a drill, jackhammer, cementing, painting, etc. Antonello is very skillful and hands-on.
- They're very generous with the food. One can eat the fruits in the farm and to cook their own meals or make their own coffee if desired.

Cons:
- The volunteers work at least 6 hours a day -- 4 hours for the daily tasks (cleaning, construction, painting -- depending on what they need) and then the volunteers would need to help in preparing lunch and dinner. The volunteers can either cook (which takes 60-90 minutes) or wash the dishes (which takes 40-60 minutes). Most of the volunteers feel that they don't have sufficient free time to relax. Also. when we arrived, there were only 3 guys. So we were tasked to help in the construction of an apartment 20 minutes away from the farm. It was physically demanding yet fulfilling. I learned a lot in this project. We didn't complain to Antonello but at the end of the day, we didn't have enough energy to explore the farm or the town since it was tiring. Just a heads up that this kind of project might also be proposed to a volunteer.
- Mosquitoes. There were really a lot of mosquitoes both in the room and in the farm itself. They provide mosquito coils which definitely help but I think it's not enough. It makes me anxious as someone from the Philippines, mosquitoes are ubiquitous and they usually transmit serious illnesses like dengue and malaria. It might not be the same in Italy but it's still a concern, in my opinion.
- Only 2 bathrooms. This is not a major concern but I feel like an additional bathroom would be better, especially considering that we're still in a pandemic, it would be better to not have 8 people or more share 2 bathrooms.
- There were some conflicts amongst the hosts which can affect the energy and the vibe of the stay there. I am not sure to be in the position to talk about this but it definitely greatly affects the volunteers as well if one of the hosts is rude, not in a good mood, mean, etc.
Conflicts are inevitable but I hope it doesn't come to a point where the volunteers are affected. We channel each others energy so having a positive and encouraging vibe throughout the farm is important, in my opinion.

Overall, still 5 stars. My main purpose of stating some "cons" is to provide constructive criticism and to inform future volunteers as well. I have good intentions and I hope it will be received as such. Antonello is a nice guy and he's willing to share his knowledge and skills. He's ambitious and a hardworker. He is not the most expressive person in terms of gratitude or radiating warmth (unlike his father) but still, I enjoyed my brief chats with him, talking about his passions and how he wants to give back to the community as how "the universe" granted him more than he could ask for. He definitely succeeded in creating an international community in the unsuspecting city of Sora.

So, volunteer -- if you want to make meaningful connections and experience life changing experiences and friendships, don't hesitate to volunteer in Antonello's farm.
