Heyo, We are a family, Max and Emma who live on a 40 hectare forest-farm near the village of Vabre with our baby Zora (born May 2021). We are looking for people, up to two people who can share a double bed, to stay for short periods to help us out with different activities here on our over-grown farm. Our medium term goal is to renovate the other two buildings and find individuals/couples/families with young children to live there and have revenue-generating farm projects that can be incorporated sustainably and harmoniously with the land and it's residents/owners.

We'd like that people who come stay with us are used to being around young children, are independent and ecologically minded, can be flexible yet timely, are used to working outside on farms, using their bodies as well as their minds, can follow directions, ask questions and speak up when there is a misunderstanding =)

Here we can teach you how to make bread, not kill yourself with wild plants yet eat them, permaculture type gardening, how to stack and chop wood like a pro, as well as what ever projects we are working on...

A short description of each of us:

Max grew up in the States and squatted in Ireland before coming here, is passionate about agro-forestry, climate change, permaculture, growing food, engineering the farm to be more efficient, speaking baby with Zora and making her laugh.

Emma is originally from Germany, loves Ireland (especially Belfast), the English language, is passionate about baking, sewing, weaving, textiles, cooking, preserving, social connections and making sure Zora grows up to be the happiest and well-cared for human.

Zora is a baby who loves to move, smile, be outside, be danced around, stand on her legs, drink, poop, speak a lot of baby talk, and human contact.

We will do our best to tell you in advance when we need help (what hours) and with what tasks so you can schedule your time but with a baby it is important to be a bit flexible ;)

    September-December activities (updated August 2021)

-helping us with our baby (childcare, sometimes making a meal for everyone or helping us hang fold laundry)
    -greenhouse and plant care
-helping put up new fencing against deer and wild boar
    -clearing/making paths
-moving, gathering, harvesting, stacking and chopping firewood (probably at least once a week)
-Making, hoeing, clearing, weeding (hello brambles!), planting garden beds
    -finishing greenhouse
-sometimes collecting and processing apples + chestnuts
    -house improvements (insulating the house)
-moving stuff around and general farm/house cleaning and maintenance
-improving the caravan-cabin or other cabins on the land.

    ——————————-

We go to the small organic food market in Vabre once a week with the car and do a day trip to Castres once every two weeks to go the bio store and bigger organic outside market. We often go to Vabre to see Max's mom or for some other reason and occasionally we go to some other event, friend's house or market. By foot Vabre is a 35 minute walk or a 3 minute car ride. In Vabre there are also two small supermarkets where you can buy food. There are buses to and from Castres 4-5 times a day - except on Sundays!).

After a week we check-in and talk about how it's going for every one + discuss a longer stay. Three weeks maximum unless, who knows!

    Physical Description:
We are located on a South-facing mountain SLOPED mountainside with two rivers within a ten/twenty five minute walk from the main house. We have a spring on the land that provides water from Octobre/November to July/August after that we rely mainly on rain water, jerry cans and our filter.

The forest is amazing and everywhere here. This a perfect place for people to be surrounded by nature with amazing views and the ability to hike and explore for hours without seeing a soul.

Also, when you contact us we may ask to do a video conference with you =) references on helpx.

Hope to see speak to yous soon!

French, English, German, Spanish spoken or at least understood very well

    Max, Emma and Zora

  • Alojamiento

    Alojamiento

We are offering the use of the "caravan-cabin" (insulated with a wood stove, compost toilet and an attached kitchen) for 15 hours of help a week where you would cover your food costs and cooking - we would like to eat together sometimes of course too! This is our preferred option. There are two supermarkets accesible in Vabre for you.
    OR,
25 hours of work a week where we would cover your food, organic of course, (you would cook for yourselves unless we eat together =)

There is electricity and an Ethernet cable running to the cabin and if you don't have internet on your phone, and no computer, and you need a heavy wifi connection to download things we will organise certain times where you can be in the house for that.

There are 5 buses from Castres to Vabre and the last one is at 17:10/18:10 Mon-Fri/Saturdays respectively. If we have to pick you up from Castres we will ask you to provide gas money about 6-8 euros total (depending on which car is available to drive).

We have reviews on another volunteer profile! If you want to see them just ask and we can send you the link
    :-)
