    Availability from November 2024;

We are Alan & Sarah Groves and we moved from England in 2018 to live in the historic village of Las Virtudes. Las Virtudes falls under the municipality of Villena. The City of Villena, with a population of almost 34,500 is the capital of the Alto Vinalopo district. It is located in the northwest of the province of Alicante, close to the Murcia border with easy access to the A31 to explore the Valencian Community. This fact has conditioned many aspects of the local population such as speech, gastronomy and the economy.

We have a large rural property, with central heating, a large covered and heated swimming pool and various terrace areas to relax and enjoy the sunset behind the mountains that surround the area.

We have a sign that reads: The house and surrounding grounds are maintained expressly for the comfort of the animals - and that just about sums it up! We are looking for help with the rescue donkeys and maintenance of the land and olive grove.

This is a private home and it is not a party house, so if you are looking for a peaceful retreat and love animals, then this would be the place for you. We are very remote and there is no public transport in the village, so you will need to be a keen walker or cyclist.

By car: 5 minutes to the city of Villena, 45 minutes to Alicante and 60 minutes to Benidorm. There are many walking and cycling routes in the area as well as many restaurants and bars in Villena. Mountain bikes are available for use and the train station in Villena provides excellent opportunities to explore Alicante, Valencia etc.

In England, Sarah taught children to cook at secondary school and we enjoy our food.
We will enjoy sharing recipes with you and learning to make your traditional cuisine.

The region is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. It is definitely worth a visit to one of the many bodegas. Various wine tours through the bodegas are offered, often in combination with a wine tasting, including tapas of the local products. Las Virtudes is also included in the Alicante Wine Route.

Las Virtudes, is a historic village close to the city of Villena. It is a popular place of pilgrimage and recreation. The Santuaro de las virtudes is in the centre of the village - the legend recounts the desire of the Villena people to build a temple to a patron saint that would protect them from the plague that devastated the city.
So there is lots to explore and learn.

The municipality of Villena offers festivities all year round. Some very well-known festivities are the annual Moros & Cristianos festival in September and the Medieval Festivals in March.

We are looking for animal lovers with or without experience with donkeys and dogs but confident around them and willing to learn. All the rescue animals have their own unique personalities, and you need to be of robust character to maintain personal safety and control.

The work around the property can be very physical and you will need to be strong and determined to complete tasks independently in a timely manner. For example:
Land Management - fencing, clearing ditches, cutting wood.
Olive tree maintenance - pruning, harvesting etc.
General gardening and maintenance around the property.
Help around the house - cooking & cleaning.

The types of tasks are seasonal.

    General routine mid-week:
10am - 12 mid-day working on tasks, independently around the property.
    1pm Lunch - cooked meal.
2pm - 4pm working on tasks, independently around the property.
    6pm Light supper.

You will need to provide and prepare your own breakfasts, snacks and all food at weekends.

There is good wifi and English-speaking TV channels.

This is a private peaceful home. We are very remote and there is no public transport in the village, so you will need to be a keen walker or cyclist to keep yourself entertained in the evenings and weekends.

There are excellent mountain and touring bike trails around the salt lagoon, sounding countryside and mountains.
It is also popular for hiking, running and walking and yet only 45 minutes away from Alicante and its beaches.

As a novice or more experienced mountaineer you can participate in the ascent of the Vias Ferratas. There are also various tourist and sporting cycling routes. The Chicharra Greenway, starts at the Santuario de La Virgen de las Virtudes and ends in Biar. This route introduces you to the Via Verdes in a sporty way. These used to be local railways, which are now maintained to allow both cyclists and walkers to enjoy nature. The Sierra Salinas Crossing is also definitely worth exploring for its natural mountainous environment.

There are many places to visit in and around Villena and Las Virtudes. The castle of Villena, Atalaya, plays a central role in the history and also the annual festivities. The main museums show you both history and modern art. The Treasure of Villena, Tesoro de Villena, attracts visitors from all over the world every year. You can admire these in the Archaeological Museum.

The many restaurants and tapas bars offer the typical dishes of this region. The influence of the Mediterranean and La Mancha cuisines is recognisable. Local products are used in the recipes, such as carrots, wheat or potatoes. These are all grown around the property and we are situated close to the carrot processing factory.

We have a large heated swimming pool that you are welcome to use, but depending on the outside temperatures you may decided it is too cold. It can be cold and windy here!
