We are looking for 2 helpers to help keep our house clean and warm till April.... a permacuture compost garden enthusiast and bike expert to live in our downstairs appartment from the end of November 2021 till the begining of April. 2022
We would accept a couple...
Welcome from Trixie and Allan. We've lived here in this place of many wonders since 2005 and want to share its magic and healing energy. Join us, a couple of elderly adventurers, to stay in this amazing place which is too much for us to manage alone.
Some healthy cooking experience would be a bonus and a sense of humour essential. We need help to keep our wood stoves supplied with logs (which we buy in usually) and kindling to light the stoves around the house. They would also be helping with Allan's laundry and cleaning his apartment and occasionally to keep him company to give him a break from Trixie 😉
Allan has recovered from a long illness and is quite frail now but has a wicked sense of humour when he's not being curmudgeonly. He loves sport and adventure but from the comfort of his armchair now. He loves to watch and talk about Rugby and Cricket.
We also need a helper in the main house upstairs to support Trixie who is an artistic crafts person and
lives for her animals, nature and permoculture garden and her granddaughter Elsa, 4, and the new baby expected in May... They live nearby in the small town of Villalonga, the pueblo.
There are tasks to share in the garden: watering, cleaning the pool, some decorating and preserving garden furniture, art projects and mosaics, river bank conservation and permaculture compost making.
Our animals: 2 dogs (that need walking) and 3 cats. We also have hens and 6 rabbits... our compost helpers 😉
We are just 30 minutes from the blue flag beaches of Oliva (warm volcanic springs) and Gandía. We are on the Via Verde route in El Raco Del Duc, La Safor Valencia. It is one of the feeder routes of the Camino De Santiago de Compostela. You can get your first stamp at the hotel in Villalonga. We welcome sports climbers. Gandia pitches and Benicadell are very close and we have a local guide who can teach you and transport you), mountain bikers...
We have 7 mountain bikes- need a bike enthusiast to maintain them... and you can explore a vast complex of caves, with a local guide, containing possible Neolithic paintings and artifacts recently discovered nearby.
Specialist upcoming projects that we will need help with:
- Building a wooden porch and retreat cabin/tiny House/writer's retreat and outdoor Spanish kitchen and shower incorporated into our existing retreat in 'the Buddha Garden' outdoor sleeping area on terraces down to the river Serpis
- a yoga deck and a yurt on a disused irrigation canal
- Turning a big storeroom into a gym and games room with a pool table
- Bike maintenance... ongoing urgently
We occasionally host retreats for writers, artists, and yoga, led by teachers who bring their clients. We are wheelchair friendly and offer support for the less able.
Our house, is named after 'the Window', the huge hole at the top of Mount La Safor, one and a half hours from Valencia and Alicante airports. We're on the disused railway which starts from the port of Gandia - the Ducal home of the Borgia, a vibrant medieval city; markets, theatre, cinema, concerts, great restaurants and bars, shopping centre, train station... all half an hour away from us. It's known as the 'Via Verde', a 13km walk of unsurpassed limestone crags to Lorcha, Moorish terraces and orange groves, punctuated by five exciting tunnels hugging the Rio Serpis gorge. We're in the Cirque de La Safor... a huge crater said to be an 'energy portal' like Machu Picchu.
Allan lives downstairs in 'The Hovel', one of two apartments under the main house. Allan is growing old 'disgracefully' and doesn't join in with us much now but when he does, he loves to hear your adventurous stories. He lives in his ‘Man Cave’.
The apartments have a separate entrances, two seperate courtyards with trees and terraced organic gardens with fruit trees down to the river... great for wild swimming. Trixie often has her granddaughter Elsa, born May 2017 who comes regularly for adventures and art and the animals while her mum is working as a translater for a software company and studies self love coaching.
We believe in contributionism and that we are all equally responsible for the smooth running of this very special place, sharing the work, our love made visible.
We don't ever forget you are volunteers and you get to choose what you get involved in here.
In summer our local, Diddley Cafebar, has regular live music on summer Sunday evenings.
The house is eco-friendly (18 solar panels). We are working towards zero waste. We have wi-fi and a music hub for you to plug your phone into to share your music.
Allan had a heart transplant in 1986 and was a teacher. Our Fiesta of the Heart is 26th Feb. It’s our open day. He loved climbing, running, cycling, swimming, sailing, kayaking and theatre. After the transplant, he worked as a volunteer with the less able in all of these and taught sailing for the disabled in Keelder Water at The Kalvert Trust. He's a champion swimmer (in the Transplant Games) but he's now in need of support and companionship.
Trixie ran a vegetarian, organic, Fair Trade, whole-food restaurant and worked with adults with learning and physical disabilities. Kindness gratitude and non judgment are at the heart of our place here as is herbalism and nutritional therapy. She is a crafts person who spins wool, knits (Fair Isle and Arran), crochet and sews draws, paints and writes. She studies nutritional therapy and likes a paleo diet and can share these skills and loves cooking, baking and making bread, (vegan and vegetarian food always available here, though we are flexitarians). She loves animals, wild flowers, people, walking, swimming in the river, meditation and yoga and music.
She rescues and cares for stray dogs and cats abandoned in the mountains. At the moment we have four dogs and three cats in our care. Come and visit to see if you'd like to spend time with us on retreat or join our small community for a longer period to lend a hand with various projects. Your ideas of how you can contribute are always valued. Bienvenido to our wild river gorge and our home.
