Descripción
We are a 16 key resort in Nubra valley- 4 hours drive up from Leh. There are roughly 30 full time staff to work with us in different fields, all geared towards ensuring the best experience for guests who come to stay with us.

As volunteers we are looking for someone who can teach yoga, as well as help with social media handling. If photographers, that would be an added bonus.

We invite young, passionate people to come learn about Ladakh and what we offer to our guests. In return, we offer clean comfortable lodging. Apart from a diverse group of people working at the resort, we attract interesting guests from the world over, exposing you to different ideas and ways of life while living at an idyllic village.

I will give a detailed review to the opportunity volunteering in the Lamdon School in Sumoor with some facts:

Contact:
After I contacted the Kyagar proposing my interest in helping out at the Lamdon School they gave me Bubu’s contact who organised the introduction at the school.

Facts of volunteer life:
My Indian friend Pallavi and I got a… read more guest room inside the school building with all the amenities we needed. Drinking water is provided outside from the filtered glacier water. Electricity times are between 6pm - 8am. 3 meals a day are provided by the hostel, it’s basic but decent and you can use the kitchen for making coffee or anything else you wanted. Meal times are 8am, 13pm, 8:30pm.

Assembly starts at 9:50, school time 10:35 - 1 and 1 - 4 so there is no rush in the morning and plenty of time in the afternoon, 6 days a week except Sunday. Periods are 35min long. The principle or vice principle assigns you between 3-5 classes every morning. There is 1-8th grade + UKG/LKG. About half of the class starting from 4th grade understands English very well so the lower classes are quite challenging but even more fun. If you can handle LKG and UKG you are well prepared to handle anything in life;).
Discipline gets better the older they are, 6-8 grade you can entertain with quality education.
We mostly practiced English with all the classes…counting, spelling, dictation, games, common knowledge, geography, arts and crafts but you are absolutely free in your curriculum.

Staff:
The staff is very friendly but let’s say…a little bit shy. Except for one male all of them are female. Not all of them are fluent in English so there is a boundary in communication. You get delicious chai every morning in the teachers room. I attended some classes for photography purposes and to see how the professionals work, that was no problem.

Sumoor:
The village is small but has several shops with all you need. It’s the biggest village in that area after Diskit. People are friendly, the donuts at the bakery are delicious and the landscape around is absolutely stunning. We made a day trip with our motorcycle to the Siachen Glacier base camp although we didn’t make it till the end cause foreigners are not allowed. Actually foreigners are re not allowed beyond the hot springs about 20k up the valley from Sumoor but going to the free hot pool I can really recommend. It’s all new and cozy.

Hostel:
About 40 kids live in the hostel. They have play times after school and after dinner. They are super polite, well mannered and service you where they can. They are happy to hang out with you and share anything you wanne know. Feel free to plan activities with them, the super friendly hostel warden Takpa will support you.

Experience:
After volunteering one month in a school in Kathmandu I was kinda familiar with the Himalayan attitude, lifestyle and mindsets and I love it. Just by thinking of my time with the kids I get tears in my eyes visualizing their smiling faces🥹🥹🥹. The loving kindness I received from all my students was incredible heartwarming. Out of classroom kids behave mostly, are extroverted and best thing, they share their delicious food from home with you during lunch break😋.

Summary:
Both of us had an absolut wonderful time at the Lamdon School. Waking up every morning with view on the snow covered mountains gave every day a special sparkle. Working with the kids is absolutely fulfilling. 2 weeks is not enough though to build up good connections with the students so I recommend at least a month or more.

Special tip:
Prepare a meal for them, the girls are happy to help you cooking and all the kids are excited for something different than their normal meal plans.

If you're wondering whether to work here, do it! I volunteered as a yoga instructor for 2 weeks and it was such a great experience. The resort is incredible, nestled in the mountains next to a beautiful river desert. The owners are really cool people and there's lots of little things you can do in your free time like going on bike rides and hikes.

I couldn't have asked for a better first Workaway experience. I spent one month here as a Yoga Instructor, teaching morning and evening classes for the guests.
