    Hello animal lovers!

I am Natasa, founder of a non-profit animal welfare organisation in the Thessaloniki area of Greece.

Our mission is to rescue stray and abandoned dogs, provide them with a safe and caring environment, socialise and rehabilitate them, and eventually find them loving adoptive homes.

It is a little different from a traditional shelter. Many of our dogs live socially in compatible groups rather than spending their lives confined to kennels. This gives volunteers a wonderful opportunity to observe dog behaviour, learn about animal welfare and help dogs that come from many different backgrounds.

I am actively involved in the sanctuary and help alongside our volunteers, and we also have a local staff member working with us. Volunteers are here to support us with the daily care of the dogs; they are not responsible for managing or running the sanctuary.

Because volunteers help around rescue dogs, safety is extremely important. During your first days we will introduce you to our routines, explain the different groups of dogs and show you how to carry out the tasks safely.

We are especially looking for responsible animal lovers who would like to stay for a minimum of three weeks. A longer stay is very welcome because it gives you time to learn the dogs’ personalities and become part of their daily lives.

If you love dogs, don’t mind getting your hands dirty and would like to experience the reality of animal welfare in Greece, we would love to hear from you.

    Cultural Exchange and Learning Opportunities

Staying with us gives you the opportunity to experience animal welfare and dog rescue in Greece from the inside, while also experiencing everyday Greek life and meeting people from different countries.

You will learn about dog behaviour, communication and socialisation, as well as the daily care of rescued, elderly and disabled dogs. Many of our dogs have come from difficult backgrounds, so you can also see how patience, routine, positive interaction and time can help a dog gradually learn to trust people again.

We have a different approach from a traditional kennel environment. Whenever possible, our dogs live and interact in compatible social groups, giving volunteers a unique opportunity to observe how dogs communicate within a group as well as how their individual personalities develop.

You can learn about feeding, hygiene, enrichment, socialisation, preparing dogs for adoption and the everyday challenges involved in animal rescue. I am happy to share the knowledge and experience I have gained through years of rescuing and caring for dogs.

The exchange goes beyond animal welfare. We love sharing Greek culture, food, traditions and everyday life with our volunteers, and we are equally interested in learning about your country, language and culture.

Over the years, we have welcomed volunteers from many different parts of the world, so it is also a place where people from different cultures can meet, live together, exchange ideas and often create lasting friendships.

During your free time, you will also have the opportunity to discover Thessaloniki and the surrounding area, enjoy Greek food, visit the beaches and experience life in Northern Greece.

We hope you leave us with much more than memories: new knowledge about dogs, a better understanding of animal welfare, new friendships and a real experience of life in Greece.

    Ayuda

We are looking for volunteers who genuinely love dogs and would like to help us with their everyday care. Because it takes time to learn our routines and get to know the dogs, we prefer a minimum stay of three weeks.

Volunteers assist me and our local staff member with tasks such as:

    * Preparing food and helping with feeding
    * Refreshing water
    * Cleaning dog living areas and yards
    * Helping keep the house and shared areas clean
    * Spending time with and socialising the dogs
    * Walking suitable dogs when possible
    * Helping with laundry and general organisation
    * Taking photographs or videos of dogs looking for homes
    * Helping with small DIY or improvement projects when needed

People with skills in photography, social media, graphic design, DIY, organisation or other creative areas are also very welcome to contribute their ideas.

A typical helping day includes approximately three hours in the morning and a shorter session later in the afternoon. Volunteers have two days off each week, arranged together according to the needs of the sanctuary and the volunteers’ plans.

There may occasionally be small additional tasks connected with the dogs, but the responsibility for managing the sanctuary remains with me and our local staff member.

This is a real animal sanctuary, so the work naturally includes cleaning and practical tasks as well as spending enjoyable time with the dogs. We want volunteers to understand this before coming, while also having enough free time to relax, explore the area and enjoy their stay in Greece.

Safety is extremely important because some dogs have difficult backgrounds. Volunteers receive instructions about the dogs they may interact with and the routines that need to be followed. We never expect a new volunteer to handle a situation they have not been prepared for. Very important to know we we do not provide insurance.

Above all, we are looking for responsible, patient and positive people who want to contribute to giving rescued dogs a better life.

    Accommodation

Volunteers stay in our sanctuary house, which has four bedrooms. Three bedrooms are located upstairs, where there are no dogs, providing a separate sleeping area for volunteers. Depending on the number of volunteers staying with us, you may occasionally share a bedroom with another volunteer, but this will always be discussed and agreed upon before arrival.

There is one additional bedroom downstairs where one of our resident dogs lives. This room is available to volunteers who are comfortable sharing their space with a dog and will only be arranged with the volunteer’s agreement.

There are shared bathrooms and all volunteers have access to a shared, fully equipped kitchen.

We provide almost everything needed for your meals and do a supermarket shop for the volunteers regularly. This includes a wide variety of food such as vegetables, frozen foods, pasta, rice, milk, cheese, cereals, bread, spreads, fruit and other everyday items, as well as juices and soft drinks. Volunteers prepare and cook their own meals according to their preferences.

Please remember that you will be staying inside an active dog sanctuary. Although there are no dogs in the upstairs sleeping area, dogs live in other areas of the house, as well as in the gardens and outdoor areas. This means that occasionally there can be barking or noise, including during the night.

Living here is a very special experience for people who genuinely enjoy being around dogs and want to experience everyday life in an animal sanctuary.

  • Algo más...

    Algo más...

The sanctuary is located in a peaceful area outside Thessaloniki, surrounded by nature and with plenty of opportunities to explore Northern Greece during your free time.

You can use public transportation to visit Thessaloniki and other nearby areas. Please keep in mind that public transport outside the city is less frequent than in the city centre, so some planning may be needed. Renting a car is also an option if you would like more freedom to explore the region, beaches and surrounding villages.

Thessaloniki is a lively and welcoming city with beautiful historical sites, cafés, restaurants, nightlife and, of course, amazing Greek food. There are also many beautiful beaches and interesting places to discover around the area.

During your days off you will have time to explore, relax or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the sanctuary.

Please remember that this is a real animal sanctuary rather than tourist accommodation. You will be living close to rescued dogs and experiencing everyday life around them. For people who genuinely love animals, this can be a very rewarding and memorable experience in Greece.
