This is the most remote hotel on mainland Britain, situated in the splendid isolation of North Scotland's Highlands, the home of eagles, wild deer and salmon. In the tourist season we are looking for practical and flexible individuals or couples to help run the hotel while, out of season, we need help with renovation and improvements.

As a small hotel, all rooms are ensuite and have good beds; double, bunk or twin. Workawayers normally have their own room, unless they come as a couple. The kitchen has a large gas oven and a full range of equipment. We have no TV and, because the WiFi is provided by satellite, the internet is limited and will not support Netflix or other streaming services. We do, however, have a large DVD collection, a well stocked library, boardgames and a piano.

Northern Scotland is not for the faint hearted or those intimidated by long dark winter nights, with the real possibility of being snowed in (possible from December until April). But we do have a small library, open fires and wonderful views. There is no light pollution as there are no neighbours, but you are likely to see the Northern Lights if you stay in winter. In summer you have 'white nights' with the sun hardly setting.

I spent three months here but could easily have stayed longer. Eva and Adrian were really nice and welcoming, very interested in including the volunteers in the life of the house, and the short time we had together (because they were mostly away during the winter, at the time of my stay) was very nice. One of the things I like when working… read more somewhere is seeing how people appreciate the work done, and here I really felt it.
Ollie is great, thoughtful, and very interested in giving the volunteers a good time by, among other things, taking us on really nice tours. I had a good time working with him attending to the guests. Chichi and Boo are lovely, beautiful little dogs, which I miss cuddling.
The place is beautiful! You can go hiking, cycling, or just for a walk around. It's not difficult to spot herds of deer. And you might get the chance to see the northern lights. The work can be very intense sometimes, but in my experience it paid off very well, not only financially but also with comfortable beds and delicious food.
Once again, I thank you for hosting me (especially in the tricky moment when I was with the other host), and I hope to see you again someday!

What an absolutely fantastic time, at an unbeatable location! I spent one whole month in the cosiest hotel like no other - so this is a long review... sorry!
Eva & Adrian left for their other home shortly after I arrived, which meant I was working alongside Ollie the manager and and another Workawayer Marcel (other lovely Workawayers were there… read more at the very start and end of my stay also). So I got to take charge of a great deal of the hotel responsibilities: welcoming guests from across the world, setting out and serving meals and afternoon tea/coffee/cakes on arrival, laundry, dishes, cleaning communal spaces, and of course making the beds and cleaning en-suite bathrooms. I learned so much by 'just doing,' and even though I'd had a quick handover from the previous pair of Workawayers, most of the tasks required common-sense or initiative to respond to the needs of the guests. Though stressful at times due to the nature of hospitality, I couldn't have asked for a better first experience of hotel responsibilities. This has definitely taught me a lot of useful skills, not just proper dining table-setting, but flexibility and ensuring the comfort of guests, connecting with people the world over, and not burning toast in the grill.
SO many parts of my day were fun: showing new guests around the hotel, and inviting them to enjoy the character of the place and sip a tea/coffee by the sitting room fire. Sometimes the whole hotel is booked out by a group (or hosts events) and we can get to know people better, or there's a chance to chat with regular visitors. I even had a fun time puzzling about which garnish suits which flavour of soup, and how best to plate up the desserts (you know you've won when the guests take photos of their food).
It was important to maintain a good routine, and I found it easy to keep on top of the laundry and other tasks. Free time was mainly after rooms were finished and before new guests arrived to check-in, as well as in the lead-up to dinner. But on busy days I'd spend more time cleaning rooms or and might be tending to lunchtime guests.
Being vegetarian (and since we did not have vegetarian guests often), I got to enjoy the first course of the dinner meal - soups of different colours every day, plus a huge thanks to Ollie for the best mushroom soups - and had a whole pantry of restaurant-quality ingredients at my disposal for cooking my own meals. Marcel's porridge, Irish soda bread and various cakes were a treat too, and I enjoyed baking for the guests in my spare time.
I loved the peace and solitude of the place. Although there is only one main road, there are countless paths winding all across the Flow Country right from the doorstep of the hotel. In every direction you find something different; the craggy hills, the green riverside patches pock-marked with mushrooms, and the sandy shore of the lochs. There's little traffic or noise apart from logging trucks and occasional planes. It is a typically very windy place - which is helpful for the laundry - but we also had some stunning, calm days, and you can watch the weather coming in from all sides. There's a great selection of books available for rainy days! I was there in October, which is a brilliant time to see and hear the stags rutting, to appreciate the vibrant colours across the landscape, and keep an eye out for aurora (which we saw very clearly one night!).
Eva and Adrian are super kind and have many stories to tell. They have travelled and toured people extensively, both across Scotland and on other continents. Ollie is excellent company and showed me the sights around the area while on the weekly large shopping trip. I also appreciated the chance to join the mushroom hunters and explore more around the Flow Country with Eva. Keep up the amazing stuff!

Ella and Alina were two German girls who came to us almost straight after finishing school. With a lot of courage they drove to Scotland with their own car ready to take on any challenge. In the beginning a bit shy they quickly learned what was needed in the hotel. Whilst Alina preferred to do the background work Ella was always ready for a chat… read more with the guests, such making them fell welcome straight away.
Both did the rooms and the cleaning of the house, helped in the kitchen and with serving breakfast and dinner.
Alina is an excellent baker and often made our guests and the crew happy with her yummy cakes. It was a pleasure to host Alina and Ella.
We think that both girls, each in their own way, will make a success in their life and we wish them all the best for it.

It was our first Workaway experience, and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect start of our gap year. We spent a month there and enjoyed ourselves immensely.
Adrian, Eva, and Ollie were very welcoming and made sure we were comfortable. If we had any questions or problems, they were always there to support us. They also made sure to show us… read more this beautiful area and provide us with many recommendations, so it really felt like we got to know the place instead of just passing by.
Even though we stayed there during the season and there was always something to do, we had a lot of fun and also the time to explore the area.
We gathered a lot of experience, met many lovely people, and had really interesting conversations with the guests. We also crossed paths with other Workawayers there.
So, to us, this place became a place of conversation and connection.
And the dogs Scapa, ChiChi, and Boo were an absolute delight.
10/10, we would recommend and do it again, anytime

The owners, Eva and Adrian, are friendly and really nice. Since it was almost the end of the season, they spent only part of our stay with us.
We spent most of our time in the hotel with the manager/chef/housekeeper Ollie and his two little dogs Chi Chi and Boo. Ollie is a great person, understanding, respectful, easy to talk to about anything.
Our main tasks were cleaning rooms, welcoming guests, making coffee, tea and cakes for guests, helping in the kitchen with food preparation, serving breakfast and dinner, table setting , washing dishes, doing the laundry, etc...
As an electrician, David worked on several electrical projects in the hotel. We did jobs like sanding and varnishing the parquet floor in the dining room, painting walls, cleaning drains in the whole house, installing new radiators, making Christmas decoration, outside work like painting wood, replanting a tree, etc. There's always something to do :-) But don’t worry – Eva, Adrian and Ollie always took care of our free time so we had plenty of time for ourselves.

Dear G,

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
i hope to see you again soon!

While I stayed there, I mostly helped with the cleaning tasks around the house. The hosts communicated clearly, were accurate, respectful, and fair, did not hide anything. This was my first workaway, so I am grateful that they trusted me. Will miss it a lot and can highly recommend it!

Jacob and Marie joined us last autumn and worked through the winter until leaving in early March 2022. Marie was a great help in the hotel, both preparing rooms and in the kitchen (where she made some fine cakes), but the main work they undertook was in the conversion of an old combined cow byre and stables into accommodation for passing cyclist… read more and others. Here, Jacob's planning experience and carpentry skills ensured the end result was finished to his exacting high standards, while Marie's willingness to 'get stuck in' regardless of the task - or the conditions - had her sanding, painting and applying sealant to the roof in all weathers. They work well without supervision and are ready to offer helpful suggestions where needed; particularly if leaning towards use of environmentally sustainable materials (the use of sheep's wool for insulation is an example). Socially, they were good company and ready to help out with any additional tasks that needed to be done. There is talk of them returning and we would certainly welcome them back to undertake further projects.

We ended up staying at the place for near on six months in the end and can wholeheartedly recommend the experience to anyone wanting a taste of real Highland wilderness. The work is varied with there always being something to do, housekeeping, help in the kitchen or with construction projects. We were there over winter when there were few guests.… read more The isolation could be a bit much for some people but you'll find yourself in good company with Ollie and the dogs. Zach too if you find yourself there in the winter months and Adrian and Eva during the rest of the year. There's a great sense of freedom being quite so far away from everything else. The initial bleakness of the area never quite goes away but walking on the surrounding hills you learn to appreciate the beauty of the place. A unique opportunity not to be missed.

Try to imagine the Highlands of Scotland, this place has it. A remote atmospheric guesthouse surrounded by moor landscape of hills with the occasional herd of red deer, wonderful for hiking with waterproof boots, and inside the guesthouse, a fisherman's guest book in the hall, rapiers on the wall and a library with wide variety of books and an… read more open fire blazing.
Eva and Adrian refuse to give it the name of hotel, and with good reason: it's too cosy for such a fancy title. It was interesting to see the reactions of the guests, who often commented on the homely atmosphere of the place.
It was out of the fishing season, but I had a wonderful opportunity to be witness to some of the stalking procedures, and a proud but emotional Ollie coming home with his first red deer, a beautiful beast, on the back of a squadbike.
The first few months Adrian and Eva, who meant to leave for the winter, couldn't travel because of covid restrictions, so I got a chance to get to know them with interesting discussions and their visions of how to develop this place.
After Christmas they left, with Tick the one-eyed Jack Russell, and then the snow started falling and for three months Ollie and I were mainly on our own. The Green Knight was parked by the main road as a postbox, for the half mile lane was too snowed in for Mark the postman to drive up.
All in all, it was a beautiful time, with plenty of interesting tasks to be done around the house. I'm grateful for Ollie's excellent cooking, Eva's tasty desserts, Adrian's introduction to the proper appreciation of Scottish whisky.
Most of all, I'll miss the landscape, the amazing colours of autumn and the quiet of a winter landscape in the middle of nowhere. The ever-changing skies are amazing.
Thank you, Eva and Adrian, for letting me stay.

Liam fitted in easily and without fuss at the hotel. Whether it was helping Eva with the domestic chores or improving his interior and exterior decorating skills, he was always a willing and helpful member of the team. Mature beyond his years, he is quick to learn and a diligent and hardworking young man. He is also good company and I will miss… read more our cribbage and chess games.

This will not be an experience I will forget. My stay at their place exceeded my expectations in all possible aspects! My work was really diversified - working in the house, painting and helping with the guests. There was never a dull moment. The surrounding area is packed with ancient ruins and stories, and amazing views. Eva, Adrian and Ollie… read more were some of the nicest and most interesting people I've ever met, able to tell you a story about everything and anything. If you are considering going to the most remote hotel in Britain as a workaway their I highly recommend the once in a lifetime experience.

As we only took on the hotel two years ago there were still a lot of things to do to. Without prompting, Lorna and Viv immediately adopted several projects and got stuck into the work. Whatever they did, was done to perfection. Not only did they renovate the kitchen, reorganised the utility room and tiled a bathroom, there were also a lot of… read more smaller tasks which they took on and thought through to improve. For me it was also a pleasure to be surprised by so many little artistic things. Viv loved to do little wood carvings: here I find a carved fish on the fishermen's hut and there a little duck on a tree next to a sundial.
Adrian and I wish them both all the best for their future plans.

We had an amazing time living off-grid for two months in the north of Scotland, it was everything we were hoping it would be and more! We really appreciated the opportunity to learn so many new skills such as tiling, plastering and carpentry. It has been an invaluable experience and memories we will treasure for life. We loved the freedom we had… read more to do any project we wanted to and to go hiking as far as the eye could see. The hotel could not be in a more beautiful location, surrounded by the wildlife and so perfectly remote. Adrian and Eva were such kind and generous hosts, we really felt that they cared for our well-being and went out of their way to help us to return home during the covid19 lockdown.
Thank you both so much for having us and we look forward to coming back to visit one day and completing the hikes we didn't get around to!

Lia & Silviu are a charming couple with a spirit and outlook that shows they are still very much young at heart: friendly, eager and ready to learn. I only joined them for their last week here, but it was a pleasure to meet them and we had more than one lively conversation around the dining table in the evening. The far north of Scotland in winter… read more is not the most hospitable place and our remote location can make it intimidating if you feel you will be cut off, but Lia and Silviu faced the high winds and snows with cheerfulness and, indeed, seemed to enjoy everything. Eva and I wish them all the best with their new life back in Romania together. Adrian

Due to its remoteness and landscape, it has truly been an unique experience to be here for almost 3 weeks. During our stay, we worked on various house renovation projects and general maintenance. The work schedule was flexible, in our case being spread out thru the day from about 9:30 to about 15-16:00 ( breaks included :) ). We had plenty of time… read more to hike around the area or read from the vast library. Wifi has a cap, so we didn't use it for streaming.
We've learned some useful practical skills, but also learned a lot about the area and Scottish culture from both Adrian and the other workawayers. Because of the remoteness of the location, you need to be a bit self reliant and work as a team, in case you would be staying with other workawayers. We recommend being equipped with warm water/windproof clothes and shoes - it also gets a bit nippy in some rooms of the hotel.
We met Adrian during our last week and found him to be a remarkable person, with many interesting tales from his life and a true Scottish gentleman :). Unfortunately we did not have the pleasure of meeting Eva, but we're sure she must be as lovely as Adrian.
All in all, it was a wonderful experience and we highly recommend Adrian and Eva and their home.

Reina, Nihi and Stephenie looked after our lonely hotel at the end of 2019. Cheerful, friendly and unflustered, they were willing workers who took the hardships of living off-grid in winter in their stride.
