INNER CITY MELBOURNE HOME
A peaceful and relaxing home in an inner city Melbourne suburb with easy access to the sights of Melbourne. Very close to CBD/downtown, Newport Lakes and the Williamstown beach. There is a bus stop 60 seconds from the front door and a train station a short walk away that is only a few stops into the CBD.

My home is a ‘No smoking, No drug and No alcohol’ home. (If you smoke you can smoke outside.)

I am a professional, community minded mid 40's woman. I naturally gravitate towards people who are open-hearted, generous of spirit and self aware. Most of the people I surround myself with are making a positive difference in the world or are on a spiritual or personal growth journey of some kind.

I value heart felt, emotionally intimate connections with friends and associates. I enjoy people. I love going out listening to music, theatre and dancing. I am fit, eat healthily and appreciate being outdoors in nature.

If you think you can make a positive contribution in my home and that we have some things in common then please get in touch - I would love to hear from you. I offer short term 5 day stays but may also consider longer stays - just ask and I can let you know if it is possible or not.

I need some help with a few community initiatives I am involved in - all of which make the world a better place. A couple of examples of these initiatives are: a film to inspire people to make a positive difference in the world and a music club for singers. Some of the skills that would be useful to these projects are:-

- Web Development (Wordpress experience)
- Backend Developer
- Graphic Design and Photoshopping
- Film Editing (Advanced skill level in Adobe Premiere and After Effects)
- Writing and editing

I could also use a bit of help around my home, such as:

- Handyman and painting (walls inside a house)
- Trimming Trees
- Gardening/Cleaning/Home Duties

You must:-
- Have a good work ethic and be able to help unsupervised and be able to use your initiative.
- Take pride in your work.
- Be a willing volunteer.
- Be tidy and clean up after yourself.

There will be a set time each day (mostly starting in the mornings) for you to perform your volunteer work. There can be some flexibility with this, if needed.

Only half a kilometre drive to the Westgate Freeway, the gateway to the Eastern suburbs and this freeway leads in the opposite direction to Werribee Open Range Zoo, Geelong and Victoria's magnificent Great Ocean Road.

My stay in Jacqueline's house was amazing ! I stayed 5 days and I really felt at home. I helped for some gardening, cleaning the garden and I really liked it. The weather was so nice. She also invited me to several events and places which was great. Nevertheless, there were several things that tainted my stay with her. I initially was going to… read more stay with Jacqueline for 5.5 weeks to build/expand some WordPress websites for her, but only ended up staying 3 weeks. Here are some things that perhaps future workawayers would want to know: (1) the "limited internet access" box should be checked in the "A little more information" section. It is mentioned under the "Accommodation" heading, but it can be easy to miss there. The "limited wifi" refers to an open network from a community center across the backyard, but you cannot get it reliably from inside the house. Also, only my phone, not laptop, could connect to it when I went outside. Another option that Jacqueline gave to me was to use her hotspot from her phone. This worked better, but had the limitations that she needed to be in the house with it on for you to have wifi and it still wasn't entirely reliable to get from the desk in the room she gave me. (2) it's misleading when she says that the work required is "3 hours per day, 5 days a week". More accurately, it's simply 3 hours/day that you stay with her, so since I stayed for more than 5 days, I was working 21 hours per week. (Likewise, if you only stayed 2 days, you would only work 6 hours.) (3) one thing not mentioned on the profile is that outside of the 3 hours/day contract, she requires you to do 30-60 minutes of cleaning each week (I did the bathrooms and vacuumed). (4) When I was still home in the US, we talked via phone. I told her that in additional to general WordPress experience I was looking to get experience with some more advanced/custom stuff, in particular PHP and Javascript programming, so that I could showcase that in my portfolio. She told me that the website she wanted me to work on was pretty basic but that she'd be happy for me to do more advanced things so that I would get the type of experience I wanted. However, when I got there and began working, she told me that she wanted as little customization as possible and that I should only use existing plugins and themes. Thus, I did not get the type of experience that I was expecting to get. (5) When I was working, Jacqueline would (almost always) be working either beside me or at the same table. At times it felt micro-managey to me because she would often interrupt me to "feed me information" and she would frequently ask me to update her with how things were going. This improved after the first week (see note at end of review). (6) Across all of Australia as far as I've experienced and heard, house insulation is really awful compared to the US, which has relevance because of the next two points. (7) I arrived on September 6, which is the beginning of spring in Australia. The house heater/furnace was broken when I arrived and there was no heat for the first week or so. In the morning, the house would be the same temperature inside as outside. Anyone from Melbourne will tell you that the weather is really variable there, so some days this wasn't as much of an issue. But there were multiple days where the low was 40F/4C. In the morning I was so unmotivated to get out of bed because of how cold it was. Only after a few days did I find out she had an electric space heater. She let me use it on a cold evening in my room for about 30 to 40 minutes which was great. A day later I asked if I could use it in the morning when it was about 48F/9C in the house. Jacqueline was really surprised at my request and refused to let me use the space heater for just 20 minutes to boost up the temperature in my room. Instead, she suggested that I sit in the sun or go to the library. (8) When the heater isn't broken, Jacqueline does not turn on the heat until the temperature drops below 57F/14C, so if you visit in the colder times of the year it could be down to that temperature in the house. (9) When it's dark, expect to only use one light at a time in the house. There is a sign on the fridge saying that leaving an extra light on in the house for just 1 or 2 minutes is the same as burning up a $5 bill. On a final note, I need to mention that I really like how approachable Jacqueline was on these matters. After the first week we had a discussion about how things were going where I shared the things listed above. Some improvement was made, but overall I decided it was still best for me to leave early.
