We are Laima and Krišjānis, living on our family farm in the countryside of Svitenē, Latvia.

We chose this life out of a deep desire to live in relationship with land and animals, and to take responsibility for the daily work that this kind of life requires. Over the years, our home has grown through hands-on care, physical labour, observation, and learning — especially through living with horses and creating systems that support their well-being.

This is a place for people who feel drawn to contributing to something real: caring for land, showing up consistently for animals, and taking part in the everyday tasks that keep a working homestead functioning.

Life here is practical and hands-on. We usually host one Workawayer at a time, most often for around a month. The work is physical, manual, and sometimes repetitive. Days are shaped by weather, seasons, and the needs of the household and animals.

If this way of living resonates with you — both the dream and the daily work behind it — we’d be happy to hear from you.

Our farm is located next to our pottery studio, where we create porcelain and stoneware tableware for galleries and restaurants internationally. You will be living alongside a working creative practice and can see how daily life is organised around craft, production, and responsibility.

Horses are an essential part of our household. We live with four horses who are cared for as family members in a track-based living system designed to support movement, access to forage, and social contact. Since 2016, I (Laima) have studied holistic, heart-centred approaches to horse care and management, which has given me a broad and practical tool-set that informs my own approach to horsemanship.

Our horses are not used for sport or competition. They are family members, and their daily care is a real and consistent part of life on the farm.

Over the years, this way of living has taught us a great deal about responsibility, observation, and working in partnership with animals and land. We are happy to share what we have learned through everyday life and work, so you can experience this connection for yourself and take inspiration into your own future path.

Depending on the season, daily life may include:
    General homestead and household tasks
    Preparing meals for our family
Gardening, greenhouse work, and seasonal orchard care
Practical outdoor work and DIY or maintenance projects
Being part of the daily rhythm around our animals

Occasionally, we may ask for house- or pet-sitting when we are away for a few days. One of our cats requires regular medication, so responsibility and reliability are essential during these times.

Please tell us in your application about your experience (or comfort level) with physical work, animals, gardening, cooking, or practical tasks.

This Workaway is best suited for someone who:
Feels genuinely drawn to horses, land, and animal care
Is comfortable with physical work and outdoor conditions
Understands that care involves consistency, not just inspiration
Values contribution, presence, and shared responsibility
Is looking for an honest, grounded work exchange

If this way of living resonates with you — both the dream and the daily work behind it — we’d be happy to hear from you.

    Alojamiento

During summer we provide accommodation in the loft above the pottery studio. During the winter months, accommodation is a private bedroom in our family home.

A kitchen for preparing your own meals is available, as well as a shower and sauna in the adjoining building next to the loft.

If you enjoy cooking, you are welcome to prepare lunches and share them with us as part of daily life on the farm. Otherwise, we usually share meals occasionally, rather than every day, to keep a natural balance between work, rest, and personal space.

    The wider property
The property is spacious and active. We live in a 150-year-old two-storey brick house, where we also host ceramic artists for residencies and courses throughout the year.

Adjacent to our home is my parents’ working agricultural farm, where they grow crops such as beans and wheat. This means the wider area is very much a working rural environment, with machinery, seasonal activity, and farm life happening around us.

    Getting here
The easiest way to reach us from Riga Airport is by Bolt taxi. The journey takes around 1 hour and 10 minutes and costs approximately €60.

It’s also possible to arrive by public transport from Riga (to BAUSKA) which takes about 1.5 hours and costs under €5.

The closest village is Pilsrundāle (7 km away), and the nearest larger town is Bauska (20 km away). A public bus stop is located 2.8 km from the farm, with good onward connections throughout the country.

Please note that we are in a rural location, so planning your arrival in advance is important.
