Janet and Felix have a beautiful manor house which is full of history and love, their pets really add to the cosiness (and entertainment) of the place. They know so much about the local area and shared their knowlege with me, I was also convinced to do a cold water swim, with Janet and her friends, who were welcoming and inclusive with all sorts of social activites. There was a local service in town on rememberance day which was a nice cultural expereince, and we had a few soirees and outings to antique road shows and nearby towns - there's always so much happening in this vibrant, loving place, I can't reccommend enough and I feel like I will be back one day for sure!Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

We had the best week staying with Janet and Felix! The work was very fair and fun, we did mostly tree/hedge trimming and some cleaning. When we weren't working there was always something fun to do and heaps of little towns in the area to explore. We went swimming / paddle boarding at the lake with a bunch of Janet's friends, her best friend Yvonne owns the local pub which is only a short walk away, one of the cats had just had kittens so we loved looking after and playing with them, and Scooby and Brooke the two dogs who are such characters and so friendly. We could not fault our stay one bit. I was supposed to stay with the lovely Janet and Felix for 2 weeks but I ended up extending my stay because I was having such a lovely time and wasn't ready to say goodbye. … read more there's always something social to do if you feel like it. From daily swims, to bar visits (her bestie owns the bar down the road), to BBQs with friends and their families. The workload is very fair and Janet is good at finding tasks that are suited to people's specific strengths/preferences. The accomodation is CLASS! And not to mention the fooooood! Veggies straight from the garden paired with all sorts of decadent meals. You definitely won't go hungry here! Can't recommend this place enough!! Until next time x

Our days were very busy in the best way, going for early morning swims at the nearby lake, gardening in the morning and there's plenty of afternoon activities in Montembœuf! We went line dancing, took part in a gym class which helped with my French, played with the horses and donkeys and visited Janet's friends who were all so lovely.
It was a great experience and I had the chance to meet some amazing people, including other Workaways in the village. We had a few evenings full of good food, good wine and good craic!
Janet was also very flexible with work, if I wanted a day out somewhere I could work extra hours other days to make up for it and when the weather was really nice (27 degrees) we all had a day off and went down to the lake for the afternoon!
I can't forget the lovely meals Janet prepared for us too, usually thrown together and made up if what was in the fridge but absolutely delicious and the veg was straight from garden to table!
One of the cats gave birth towards the end of my stay so I also got to look after kittens which was amazing too!

I abbbbsolutely loved my 3 weeks here in Montembœuf. Janet made me feel welcome straight away, and wasted no time in introducing me to other workaways, her son Felix, and her friends like Yvonne (who you will certainly meet, and go for 7am swims at the lake with). You will have your own quiet, peaceful bedroom with a window overlooking the
… read more gorgeous green backyard. You will also be swarmed with love from the 2 dogs, Scuby and Brooke, who you will fall in love with straight away.
I can also safely say that you will be very well fed while here! Eating breakfast/lunch/dinner by the fireplace every day was always a hearty experience with delicious home cooked food.
You'll have an extremely satisfying balance of work and free time, with the work being very learned property maintenance tasks. Janet prepared me for being an amazing husband in the future and would help me in ensuring I do jobs to a good standard (husband training as we called it). While I was there, I did a few days of painting, a bit of hedge trimming, some rotorvating, and other miscellaneous tasks.
Lastly, I was given permission to leave my big suitcase full of stuff while I went off and backpacked for a few weeks which was generous and has helped me massively in being more mobile on my travels.

I really appreciated how Janet made sure I got to learn new skills and leave with more knowledge and experiences than when I came. I also loved being included in all the social events around with Janet and her friends, especially Yvonne and her workawayers. Every day I got to work on a new project, which kept things interesting and exciting. Its been only a few weeks since I left but I already miss Janet, Felix, and the many friends I made during my time, and I really hope I can go back and spend more time!

Neil and Leilani are a wonderful couple, full of enthusiasm, energy and good humour. I enjoyed my experience so much, that I extended my stay at Janets from 4 to 10 weeks (may-july)! My main jobs were: taking care of the veggie garden and caring for the horses, but I also did a lot of other different jobs. At Janets, there is work for everyone, it is really versatile!
In the vegetable garden I learned to: plant seeds, plant
… read more seedlings, supporting plant growth, plant and vegetable bed maintenance, weeding, as well as harvesting of many different vegetables and fruits. There was also a lot of DIY to tackle in the veggie garden, from building an "anti-rabbit-fence" to building growth supports for the tomatoes from scratch! I learned so so much about gardening and it was an amazing feeling, being able to harvest what I planted myself 10 weeks ago.
My horsy jobs mainly consisted of taking care of Marly, a horse that needed a bit of retraining and attention. When Janet feels like you are skilled enough around horses, she betrusts you to care for them yourself and it was absolutely amazing! I am so grateful that I was able to work with Marly and to learn so much from him! I did many different kinds of ground work with him, liberty training, trailer loading, we went for walks or rides in the field or outside of the property. It felt like having your own horse, and in these 10 weeks I stayed with Janet, Marly and I were able to form a bond, we reached a lot of goals together, I learned so much from him and we just had the best time together! I was also lucky to take another horse, Smurf, on rides around the forest by myself! Furthermore, it was my task to regularly check on the horses wellbeing, like checking their water and controlling their grass intake, as well as feed them hay and just regular health check-ups, which I all really enjoyed!
But I also did many other jobs: I voluntarily did a lot of indoor and outdoor cleaning, which I really enjoyed. I learned how to wax and polish old wooden floors, how to plaster holes in the walls and how to sand and paint windows, window frames and shutters. In my last few days I also learned how to use the strimmer to cut the grass around the property and it was a lot of fun and really satisfying!
But what I enjoyed the most was that Janet and Felix make you feel welcomed and at home, the second you arrive, bevause they are so talkactive, honest, open and friendly. You immediately feel like part of the family, I had a lot of nice and long conversations with Janet over a cup of tea, sat at the kitchen table! Everything just feels really nice, uncomplicated and open! We often had a lot of people over for dinner or went to someones house, I was able to cook a lot of the time which I really enjoyed! I got to meet sooo many nice people, friendships formed and I made a lot of wonderful memories!
My freetime I either spent on the property (because it is so beautiful!!!), visiting places or meeting up with other workaways staying at Yvonnes (Janets best friend, she also lives in Montemboeuf and hosts workaways)! Janet was really generous and treats her workaways really nicely. We had picnics at the lake, went kajaking or just all met up every tuesday having really nice dinner together with Yvonne and her workaways.

Janet was really helpful - picking us up from Angouleme, suggesting places to visit and how we could get there during our time off. The communication throughout our whole stay was great.
Janet gave us a good variety of tasks and often switched them up to keep the work interesting. Our work involved gardening, pruning, weeding, and trimming. We also cleaned/reorganised the front entrance side of the house, helped repair some broken pottery, and did some paint scraping & painting.
Everywork day Janet stopped us from our work for morning tea - pain au Chocolat with coffee was just the best! We shared the cooking for dinner between Janet, ourselves and Julio & Celia. Dinner was a mix of French, Spanish and New Zealand cooking - we all got to try something new!

During my free time I got to hang out with some other workawayers (one staying with janet and three staying with another host in town) as well as many of Janets friends around the village, mostly british but also a few french. Janet is social and there is always something going on. Sometimes Janet would be able to lend me her van and I could drive somewhere to go on walks with the lovely Brooke (Janet's collie) or explore nearlying villages. She even taught me about and let me help with the horses a little bit, which I had shown some interest in but that I had no prior experience doing.

We can't forget Scooby, Sigui and Broke, Janet and Felix's three dogs, with whom we had a lot of fun.
The work at Janet's house was very varied: we worked in the garden, painted the inside of the house or did whatever else was needed. During the work days we always stopped for a few minutes and Janet offered us pain au chocolat and coffee.
We were also able to visit many places and Janet recommended hiking trails in the area with beautiful scenery.
All in all it was a wonderful experience.

… read more French culture. I was also encouraged to explore the area, including cycling into town to get some bread and taking the dog, Brooke for a walk both of which I loved!
The jobs were all very rewarding, we planted some trees and established a new hedge in the garden, alongside preparing and planting vegetables in their amazing garden! Tom has very good knowledge of horticulture and I have learnt a lot from him about growing and maintaining plants and vegetables!
The horses are all so lovely (even though Marley can have his moments!). It is clear Janet has spent a lot of time establishing a bond with them and I learned a lot about Natural Horsemanship during my time here including how to lunge in a round pen and ride with one rein!
We visited some beautiful local Châteaux and one weekend went antiques shopping which was very interesting learning what makes for a good antique! Once I was a little more confident with speaking some French I got the bus into the nearest city, which was Angoulême and explored the city visiting the museum, having lunch out and doing some shopping before getting the bus home.

Jan and Tom were the absolute best hosts! I learned so much about antiques and the French lifestyle. Going to car boots and auctions was great fun and I got to go see the shops in the village and the town lots of times. The horses are absolute sweethearts, Brooke and I became fast friends, and the donkeys are the cutest little things ever. The cat was a funny little thing, always finding ways to sneak into the house. It was always fun doing something outside because the animals made sure that we did it together. Often times when checking on the donkeys, horses, or even mushrooming in the donkey park, Brook and the cat would come along. Blue is a handsome boy and Jan takes wonderful care of him. He always asks for just a little more when you give him attention. Smurf is a big baby and makes some of the funniest expressions. He was fun to ride and has such a beautiful jog. Now Marley is something else. He's a big one for testing you and trying to push the boundaries. Lucky for me that I actually love that kind of personality in a horse. After a few round pennings and rides, he was great fun under saddle and developed a lovely canter.
Going on almost daily hacks with Jan was so much fun and I especially loved that Brooke was always along with us. Marley and Smurf are such good boys and make the rides interesting with their little quirks. I especially loved my last ride where we went through a village and a few hamlets on a 4 or 5 hour ride.

Janet also helped teach me about barefoot hoof trimming and Tom is a brilliant gardener and antiques expert. I liked the work I was doing in the farm, I worked in the beautiful ancient house and in the garden. I also had enough time to visit interesting places, ride a bike or learn to ride a horse.

… read more and its environment are breathtaking; beautiful sceneries ideal for horse riding or going for a walk. I had the opportunity to meet the locals and experience some of the traditional festivities which was exciting. I absolutely recommend visiting Janet, Tom, Felix, and the animals to everyone who loves nature, history, great food, who is willing to learn, and who enjoys spending evenings talking to lovely people while playing fetch with the most amazing dog in the world.
