    Description

I am Jack, a 32 years old resident of Mathare Slums, a community leader and coordinator of our programs with the organization. I will be responding to all your inquiries: emails, given the fact that I have a mobile data internet connection and giving my best service to your satisfaction any moment.

Sharing my experience and meeting new friends from across the globe is what I love most. We learn from each other's social-cultural activities and remain human. We always encourage unity in diversity and teamwork in achieving our goals in life. Any visitor who feels the need to know our diverse cultural practices, our languages as most families speak Swahili or English or their native languages I will be ready to help in any way as requested. This can be done either before or during your visits to our place.

*** REALITY IN NAIROBI SLUMS ***

With a population of about 500,000 people, Mathare is one of the biggest slums in Nairobi city, Kenya. Slum settlements in the capital are widespread, hosting 60% of Nairobi's entire population.
People in a slum experience harsh and sad reality: 2,6 million people lack sanitation services, clean water, and a proper sewerage system. Within the slums, entire families survive on less than 1 USD per day and are hardly able to afford one single meal. Most of the slum dwellers live inside 4 square meters units made of iron sheets, where security becomes an issue and fires spread easily during the night. Moreover, such an overcrowded and desperate environment becomes a perfect arena for diseases like HIV, cholera, malaria, etc. In this dark reality, the project brings hope and a future for the most vulnerable dwellers.

    *** OUR ORGANIZATION ***
Our Community-based organization is officially established and registered with the Ministry of Gender Sports, Culture and Social Services in 2019. The project dreams of a Nairobi free of slums where its citizens are given equal opportunities and where poverty becomes an issue of the past. In order to design such an ideal future, the organization is currently working in the field by empowering women and youth which are to be considered the driving force of the change.

    Our current projects:
Tailoring training project(Women Empowerment) ongoing for women living in Mathare slums to enable them to become more independent and support themselves and their families.
Advocacy for HIV-AIDS women. We visit women in families to support and counsel them. Our main focus is to erase the stigma around HIV/AIDS, which hinders the affected person from living a proactive social life.
Among these current projects, we are wishing to expand, make our community bigger and help even more people in Mathare slum. That's why with excitement we are looking for people who would be able to help, bring new ideas to our community so we can work together, share experiences and grow together.

    OUR TARGET.
To build a Community Resource Center.
We would love to improve access to information on socio-economic and environmental development through the use of Community Resource Center and its six corners:
    I) Tailoring training project to empower women.
    II) Baby care services.
III) Education and ICT Training Hub.
IV) Bakery- Slums Bakery as a source of income-generating activity.
    V) Safe space for counseling
VI) Computer Programming/coding for slum youth.

*We are looking for Volunteers, Donors, Organizations, Foundations, and well-wishers who will enable us to develop and initiate community empowerment programs within our slums by planting a seed of hope to the larger community.

*We are looking for grants for individual or family income-generating activities that are appropriate in emergency or post-conflict situations to help families rebuild their lives in our community.
**Feel free to contact us via email, ask questions. Visit our website and social media accounts for further guidance and inquiry for any project you feel good to support. Feel welcome.

    Lets connect !!!

Intercambio cultural y oportunidades de aprendizaje

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Cultural interaction is embodied in a wider realm of human integration and development. We embrace unity in our diversity.
First of all, volunteers experience a different way of living and reality in Kenya, especially in slums. Aside from slums, Nairobi is also a big city so volunteers can go to the city and experience the diversity of people's lives compared to the poor and rich. During this period, volunteers can learn the mixed cultural orientation in our society, learn how to cook our traditional foods, traditional folk songs, and dancing techniques. Learning our way of life, interacting with our people, learning new languages. Our rich, robust history and resilience of our people. You will have an opportunity to interact with our people, ask questions.

We shall have open discussions and various historical site visits: Nairobi animal orphanage, Crocodile villa in the city, Bomas of Kenya, Kenya game reserves, fishing in Lake Victoria, and Maasai Mara game reserve. We endeavor to have a peer-to-peer approach in promoting our cultural practices. Our visitors will be exposed to Luo cultural practices, visit Bomas of Kenya, our rural home, and see the flora and fauna Kenya offers.

Volunteers will have a chance to have a second family, basic knowledge of our native language, develop rich interpersonal skills, and possibly think of future research on our hidden treasure within our traditional practices.
Social interaction with our kids will open a new world to our volunteers.

    4. Help

All Volunteers are free to come throughout the year as individual(s), couple(s), or team.
We know that in this pandemic time it can be difficult to travel so we also kindly accept online/remote volunteering.
