I am grateful to Sanne who stayed at my farm for over two weeks. She is a very good company to be with, easy going and good sense of humour, though a city person she adapted easy to the country life and found her way around quickly, being a language teacher herself it didn't take her too long to pick on the Spanish language. Sanne is very tidy and

She is a good cook. Sanne transformed the front and back gardens by clearing the area and planting a variety of herbs , it looks very beautiful now. She is very good with animals, though I don't have any of my own we had a neighbour's pony and a donky, she was attentive towards them making sure they were ok. Also she accompanied me to one of the craft markets, it was a joyful day.
All in all a highly recommended workawayer!

I stayed with Yamel for a little more than 2 weeks and it was the best Workaway experience I ever had so far. Normally it takes a little while before I feel 'home' but with Yamel I felt at ease from the moment he picked me up.
His cortijo is very nice located; remote enough, but within walking distance of the cosy and vibrant town Lanjaron. The
… read more house is very authentic and has a big garden where you will not get bored quickly. The Lanjaron river even runs through his back yard and has a little waterfall!
Yamel is really good company. We had a lot of nice conversations and I also had to laugh with him. He has a good sense of humor. Occasionally friends of him would pass by and also the neighbor’s animals stayed with us for a while. I love animals so I really liked this happy bunch: the pony Sandokan, the donkey Josepha and the little dogs Antonita & Manoleta!
For me, the work didn't really feel like hard working, because I loved his house so much that everything felt like a pleasure. I liked the fact that Yamel is easy going and gave me a lot of freedom in carrying out the chores. I could choose what time I started working, how I divided the day, my free days, even the jobs of that day. I spent a lot of time organising and cleaning the house, not because Yamels asked me, but because I love doing this kind of stuff, and he was grateful with everything I did. He let me re-decorate everything which gave me a lot of satisfaction. I also worked in the garden ; weeding, organising, planting herbs, pruning thorny plants, creating an aloe vera compartiment, building plant boxes with stones … One day I accompanied Yamel to a lovely market in Niguelas where he sold jewellery.
Furtermore I spent a lot of time in his little kitchen, making broth, mermelade, pizza dough and delicious meals for myself and often for the two of us. Yamel provides a lot of local fruits and veggies and has a huge variety of fresh herbes in his garden, so cooking was a big pleasure: I liked creating easy and simple dinners with the ingredients that were available in his pantry. Again he gave me all the freedom I wanted, so cooking was one of my favorite parts of the day.
Sometimes we ate together, sometimes seperately; it went very organically, without any fixee pattern and because of that every day was different which made that I was never bored and experienced a lot of freedom. For me, there was a perfect balance between spending time together and being on my own.
And last but not least; I also loved our little visits to the village of Lanjaron together. Drinking coffee, eating a tostada and having nice conversations . We often met one of his friends ‘José’ , who was also very kind. I liked practicing my Spanish with him and we spent also a very nice afternoon together, eating fresh pizza’s on the lovely terrace in Yamels garden.
So, thank you Yamel, it was a big pleasure. You are the best!Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

6,5 weeks with Jamel at his beautiful place:
It was such a great pleasure to meet Jamel! He is an attentive, calm, caring & flexible host, a tough, experienced, relaxed & warmhearted person with a sense of humour. The house is surrounded by impressive nature, beautiful views, hiking paths, mountains and water.
I worked completely independently and was able to choose the tasks I wanted to do. I worked in the cottage and built walls out of clay & straw, which gave me great joy. I cooked & baked for us, did gardening & household, carried & prepared wood for the stove and did a bit of painting. I had lots of freedom to be creative, so I experimented in kitchen, dried herbs for tea, sorted some things in and around the house, etc.. It's good to be self-motivated in this place.
Jamel cared that we always had enough healthy food - especially a very nice selection of fresh fruits and vegetables.
I also very enjoyed the contact with Santokan the cute little neighbour's Pony and with the wild but extremely cuddly cat.
In the colder evenings we lit the fire in the living room, what was so cozy and nice.
During my stay I had a hiking accident, which knocked me out for a longer time. Jamel was very understanding and supportive in that unpleasant situation, so that I could recover at his place. I feel so blessed. Before my illness I felt extraordinary energetic and content at this place.
I am inspired by Jamel's authentic helpfulness and generosity. Grateful for this experience, I can definitely recommend it and would come back another time.
Thanks, Jamel, for everything.

Sorryy& thanks for the tiritas (plasters)Very good company, joyful and happy, very sociable, on the free time we attended cultural events in town, one day we visited some of the villages in the Alpujarran area, went to Pampaneira, Bubion and Capileira, then walking a further hour to reach an altitude of about 2800 meters . In the same evening we went to the town of Orgiva where there was "La feria" (an annual event where they have traditional music as well as contemporary music and other cultural functions in clouding one for children, Arriba, abajo,inzquierda......... Other days we also did trecking to the routes of Lanjaron reaching to the refuge of Tello which is also over 2200 meters high, also one evening we did cerecillo MezQuerina where at one point in the way heard the sound of what seamed to be a wild boar we also saw some mountain wild animal species. Well, what can I say about this experience... The village of Lanjaron is a wonderful place, full of people enjoying a life of high quality. I had my own house, a beatiful little house made out of rock, my own bathroom and double bed. The place was perfect in the morning and you could even see the sea. Food was provided and you used to eat with Yamel and the neighbours. All neighbours are great, especially Antonio, with a lot of interest in other cultures and lifestyles.
We had a lot of fun, Yamel has a very good sense of humor, and a month there felt like a lot less. Wi-Fi is not available, only disadvantage I can think of, though it looked available in the profile. Being in the mountain my own connection had a hard time connecting too. To get free access one can go to the library in the village. That is 30-40' away, walking on a beatiful stone path. The way back was kind of hard but if you like hiking you will definitely enjoy it as many hikers do. I think it is better if one has a car. I did not have a problem moving, usually I would go with Yamel's car but I would prefer to be more independent.
I think internet access worked good for me because of I knew there was no internet I would have chosen something else and I would not have gained this wonderful experience. Anyway, if it is important to you too, I know that soon Yamel will get a connection. The house and the land have a lot of potential. If you like to build and create I would definitely recommend this place. Yamel is a person that listens to your suggestions and is very enthusiast about new ideas. There is always something to do and you never get bored. Granada is very close to Lanjaron and you can spend your weekends there. It takes about 1 hour to go by bus and it costs around 9 euros both ways.
I had a very good time at Yamel's cortijo and I really hope I can return one day to look at the progress he will have made with his project.
