Hi, my name is Magda, I've set up off-grid by myself and I'm happy to share my experience and knowledge to empower other women to give things a try.
I live in a house-bus on 9 acres of beautiful forest valley in the far north of NZ.
You'll be able to learn about and be involved in all aspects of life here, from building and construction, DIY maintenance, growing veges and fruit, flower gardening, solar system for power, and forest conservation trapping to protect native species.
You'll also be able to experience caring for and making a bond with my family of animals, including Aisa and Sassafras the two horses, Georgia the friendly pig, 27 ducks, Lynx the cat, and Saba the dog. (If you're a horse enthusiast, Sassafras needs training.)
In summer the river which runs through the property is great for swimming, and there are hiking tracks in the forest.
I'm a part-time musician, singer songwriter and play some guitar, and if you'd like to learn about songwriting I'll be happy to share everything I know.

For those interested in expanding their practical knowledge and experience, there's a lot to be gained here. I've always learnt best by doing things myself, so you'll be able to learn hands-on rather than just being told or watching. Whether the project involves using a power drill, putting in a fence post, planting a banana palm, or installing a door in a building, you'll be able to give it a try.
I'm also interested in sharing songwriting and music. If you have some experience with music recording software, well that's wonderful as I'm just starting to learn at the moment.
You'll be working alongside me on an interesting variety of tasks. No experience needed, just a positive attitude and willingness to try. Projects may involve carrying, hiking, digging, sanding, painting, mulching, cleaning, cutting, weeding, sawing and nailing, and using small power tools for building, like sander and drill.
You'll be staying in my house-bus, which has a spare bed in the front. It's sunny and comfortable and bedding is provided. (Lynx the cat will also provide himself).
There is an outdoor shower block with hot water and good pressure.
All meals are provided. I cook mostly rice, lentil, pasta, vegetable dishes. If you have special dietary requirements you're welcome to provide and cook some of your own foods.
The accommodation is for non smokers only.
I spend half of each day doing study, and we will be working in the afternoons, so you'll have mornings for yourself. It's a good idea to bring something to entertain yourself with, like a book, journal, podcasts or crafts to work on.
There is limited mobile reception here for spark and skinny mobiles, and none at all for 2degrees or vodaphone. I can provide limited internet to check messages, emails, etc
My home is a 20 minute drive from the town of Kaitaia, I go into town several times each week for supplies. There is a bus from Auckland city to Kaitaia, and I am happy to pick you up from the bus stop.
Being surrounded by forest means you can expect some flying biting insects, so personal insect repellent for your skin and a few pairs of long trousers and socks are a must!
Bring sensible shoes for working in.
