My private homestay provides a sane alternative to hostel dorm life in a rescued colonial-era casa that blends traditional charm with sustainable modern living. I am looking for help with various tasks to continue preserving and improving our forever home. Projects include:
    - General maintenance
    - Cleaning construction dust
    - Painting and installing accessories
    - Building furniture
    - Rearranging rooms

Immerse yourself in the vibrant Mexican culture outside our door in the heart of Mexico’s second-largest city. With sparse English spoken in the streets, it’s the perfect destination for language learners. From historic architecture to thriving art scenes and world-famous food, there’s always something to explore.

Why I Love Living in Centro Guadalajara
    1. Perfect Weather: Sunny, Semi-arid and Temperate (7°C-33°C) due to elevation.
    2. Friendly Locals: Warm, accepting, and always helpful.
    3. Cultural Vibrancy: Endless events and activities every week.
    4. Amazing Food: Fresh, flavorful, and unforgettable cuisine.
    5. Easy Mobility: Simple to navigate on foot or public transport.
    6. Safe Atmosphere: Comfortable day or night.

Guadalajara is a young ,vibrant cosmopolitan city of 1.5 million people ( inside a 6.5 million etro area) and is an excellent place to immerse yourself in the Spanish language. Unlike other popular tourist destinations, relatively little English is spoken here on the street in Guadalajara. You will be forced to practice and learn. Tapitios (Guadalajarans) are incredibly patient, kind, friendly, and helpful. For intermediate and advanced level language learners, there are several English/Spanish conversation groups I can recommend.

As the second largest city in Mexico, Guadalajara has many historical and cultural museums and cultural events every week.

For sports enthusiasts, 50,000+ participate in Via Recreativa every Sunday when the major avenues are taken over by runners, bicyclists, and rollerbladers and walkers. We have two well-equipped gimnasios a block away that have inexpensive short term subscriptions. There are major sports teams that EVERYBODY follows with enthusiasm. The overall temperate year-round climate makes for excellent for walking and hiking in nearby nature preserves.

Safety - I live in a safe neighborhood outside the "gringo" tourist bubble so you will experience daily life with middle-class and working-class Mexicans.

You will immediately notice how fresh and tasty food is. It is fairly easy to maintain a vegan or low-carbohydrate diet.

I can use help with various hands-on-tasks, including general maintenance, cleaning construction dust, painting, installing accessories, rearranging rooms. Most of the time, we’ll work side by side,. Knowing your way around a toolbox is important. Bonus points for painting, carpentry, plumbing, or tiling skills.

We’re always eager to learn from the unique skills and ideas our guests bring. Tasks are broken into manageable pieces, and we encourage you to share your expertise and suggestions—collaboration is awesome.

Our homestay is in the historic center of Guadalajara. We have one private room for WorkAways with a matrimonial (full) size bed and a shared bathroom upstairs.

Based on our past WorkAway suggestions we provide each volunteer 300 pesos twice a week to buy their choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, cheese etcetera at the mercado and prepare a healthy breakfast and lunch. In addition, fresh eggs, and a few other basics are usually available. Travelers are welcome to use the well equipped kitchen including the refrigerator. Current travelers are spending roughly 500-1000 pesos additional per week eating out at the thousands of local food stands, cafes, and restaurants. Plan on more if you are a foodie or crave anything imported.

Free purified water is always available. You can use our kettle and coffee maker to make your favorite brew. Ground coffee, cocoa, sodas and other snacks, are available around the corner.

    Algo más...

We ask for a commitment of 20 hours per week Monday-Friday. Most travelers stay with us for 2 weeks (our maximum stay).

The Guadalajara entertainment and social scene are vibrant. There are many bars and cafes around the University of Guadalajara about 2.5km away where you mix with students of all ages. Seasoned travelers will enjoy many of the networking meetups and events sponsored by the local Expats. Guadalajara is gay-friendly with many venues and options within walking distance. Something for everyone.

Local transport is safe, super easy and frequent via walking , bus or Metro ( 10 pesos). The city center is surprisingly compact so distances are short and it's very easy to move around. There is also an extensive shared bicycle system that is inexpensive.

Intercity buses are reasonably priced and very comfortable with frequent departures to cultural cities, pueblos magicos and beach towns a few hours away like Tequila, Chapala, Morelos, Manzanilla, Colima, Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita, Zacatecas, Aquas Calientes, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Queretaro, and even Mexico City (7 hours).
