I’m the founder and co-ordinator of a not for profit club, primarily aimed at helping children and their parents to improve their English as this skill is highly valued. It is made up of a group of parents who are keen to expose their children (and often themselves) to spoken English as spoken by a native speaker, or very close to that, if possible. Contact with people from around the world is also cherished. The host families get to enjoy individual time with the volunteer/s who may help out with English homework, reading etc. for at least an hour, or two a day on working days. The volunteer also spends some time during the day teaching children from kindergarten age to children of about 15 years old. These English lessons are scheduled and co-ordinated by me. A number of parents have lived, or travelled overseas and are aware of making you feel at home in a strange country. The club also has a social outreach programme that raises funds for homeless people in Hanoi in a Christmas event and making Chung Cake for homeless people at Lunar New Year.

My name is Ms Dung (pronounced Dzung) and I’m the mother of three children. I have lived and worked in Australia for a number of years and am able to speak English. Our volunteers will be told ahead of time of the plans for the next day and coming week. This may include some English lessons, helping out at a kindergarten, helping out with a variety of outdoor visits and summer camps, or helping out at a centre for children and young people with learning challenges.

So, volunteers will spend time each day of the working week helping the host family with English (usually in the early evenings) and also spend some time either in the morning, or afternoon, helping with various English groups. In exchange, the volunteer will be provided with a private bedroom and meals. One becomes one of the family and in return participates in chores around the house, or apartment and learns about Vietnamese family life and Vietnamese culture and traditions.

    Alojamiento

Your host family will provide you with a private room and your meals with the family with fan/air conditioner
We have group of 7 families to take turn for hosting International Volunteer to staying and join our club activities in Hanoi and Other provinces ( if any)

    Host families
The host families will have children and in some cases a grandparent living with them. They live in houses, or apartments. Every family is different and may supply you with information regarding their home stay before you arrive. You will also be given the address and information on how to best get to them, usually via public transport, which is good and cheap. Downloading Grab, Be, or Xanh SM (electric motor bikes and cars). All are the equivalent of Uber. As you’ll be close to the centre of things each bike, or car taxi is very cost effective and they take one exactly where you want to go.

    Air conditioners
Your home may, or may not be air conditioned. You are urged to respect the fact that air conditioning uses a lot of electricity, which adds up to a big cost in Vietnam. Please use it sparingly. Fans do a great job and are probably healthier, please use these. Take the lead from the family. Please turn off lights and fans when you are not using them.

    Meals
Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be Vietnamese in style. Should you anticipate not being in for a meal, please give your host a good few hours warning. Dinner is eaten around 6-7pm and it is eaten as a family. Should you be late for dinner it can be kept for you, please clean up after yourself if this is the case.

    Getting home late
If you are likely to be out after 10pm please discuss this with your host. Most people work and need their rest after a hard day’s work.

    Children and screen time.
Parents control screen time for their children to about 30 minutes a day. Should you wish to teach using a computer, please clear this with the parents and not allow children to use your laptop, phone, tablet, or watch.

    Household chores and your room
Not all households have domestic help, so please keep your space clean and tidy, as a good example for the children. This would also include the living areas and bathroom. Helping with the dishes etc. is much appreciated.

    Your person
A delicate subject…. Vietnam is a hot and humid country. Most people shower at least twice a day, unlike many other cultures. Following the same example will keep one smelling fresh and not offend others with BO. Wearing fresh clothes daily will also be appreciated.

As with many countries in Asia, outdoor shoes are not worn inside the house - barefoot is the norm, or wearing dedicated indoor slippers can be discussed with the host.
Should you wish to make use of things around the house, in the fridge etc. please clear this with the host. Traditionally, using anything without asking permission is regarded as rude. In addition to this, most families have a small shrine in the house and certain things are dedicated for use in prayer. Please do not touch, or remove anything from the shrine as they may be offerings. Do not point at the shrine. Your host will happily explain any of this to you should you be interested.

Please keep money and valuables on you to avoid any uncomfortable communication around these things.

🔸We will ask for your CV of your experience, skills and interests and social media link/s (for further information and to know more about you). I will then pass this information on to the host family in preparation of your visit. Before your arrival, we will contact you via Workaway to finalise arrangements, directions etc. PLEASE NOTE that preparation for hosting takes time and effort on the part of the host family. Children of host families get really excited about the arrival of volunteers and are very disappointed when volunteers cancel. Should cancellation be inevitable, please let us know as soon as you can so that other arrangements can be made.
Should we be able to host you we will forward an information sheet to you, which will include information about your host family and more details about us and our programme and homestay regulation for time table, meals and cleaning ...

🔸We offer you a meaningful cultural exchange and the opportunity to make a real difference to our children’s lives.

#We’re also keen to offer help/discussion groups/education for parents of young teenagers (11-15 year olds) as they transition through this challenging time in life.
#To date we’ve had 9 summer camps, been on more than 100 trips out of Hanoi with parents and children to explore nature, harvest chestnuts, strawberry, vegetable picking etc.
