Volunteer at a Spanish School and Permaculture Farm and Nature Reserve in San Rafael, Antioquia!
Hola! Thanks for checking out our project and community. We always have several projects going on here. We run a permaculture farm, eco-lodge, farm-to-table restaurant, language school, and nature reserve in San Rafael, Antioquia.
We’re just three hours from Medellín, located on a 15-hectare jungle reserve with the El Macanal River running through the middle of our property.
We are currently accepting volunteers for general farm projects (mainly weeding, planting, collecting stones for biofilters, working on paths, and helping with recycling initiatives), as well as volunteers with specific skills that align with our project’s needs. Whether you'd like to help with general tasks or have experience in one of the areas listed below, we’d love to hear from you!
Here are the positions we are currently looking for:
- General help (mainly in the gardens and collecting materials for biofilters)
- TEFL-certified English teachers
- Video editors
- Graphic designers
- Wildlife photographers (to document our project and biodiversity)
- Biologists (to record local flora and fauna)
- Grant writers (to support our NGO and nature reserve initiatives)
- Musicians (to perform concerts and collaborate with our community)

What We Offer
In exchange for 10 hours of work per week, you will receive:
- 7 nights of accommodation in a shared dorm
- Access to a shared kitchen in our volunteer cabin
- We can accept up to 4 volunteers in this role at a time.
What You’ll Do
Tasks vary depending on the type of volunteering you choose. All volunteers help twice a week to bring groceries and supplies up from the road to the project.
Tasks in the general volunteer program may include:
- Helping on the organic farm
- Supporting reforestation projects
- Maintaining paths through the nature reserve
- Collecting pebbles for biofilters
- Assisting with recycling initiatives and other ongoing projects

¡Hola! Gracias por interesarte en nuestro proyecto y comunidad. Siempre tenemos varios proyectos en marcha. Gestionamos una finca de permacultura, eco-lodge, restaurante de la huerta a la mesa, escuela de idiomas y reserva natural en San Rafael, Antioquia.
Estamos ubicados a solo tres horas de Medellín, en una reserva de selva de 15 hectáreas, con el río El Macanal atravesando el centro de nuestra propiedad.
Actualmente estamos recibiendo voluntarios para proyectos generales en la finca (principalmente deshierbe, siembra, recolección de piedras para biofiltros, mantenimiento de senderos y apoyo en iniciativas de reciclaje), así como voluntarios con habilidades específicas que se alineen con las necesidades del proyecto. Ya sea que quieras apoyar en tareas generales o tengas experiencia en alguna de las siguientes áreas, ¡nos encantaría conocerte!

Lo que ofrecemos
A cambio de 10 horas de trabajo por semana, recibirás:
- 7 noches de alojamiento en dormitorio compartido
- Acceso a una cocina compartida en la cabaña de voluntarios
- Podemos recibir hasta 4 voluntarios en este programa al mismo tiempo.
Lo que harás
Las tareas varían según el tipo de voluntariado que elijas. Todos los voluntarios ayudan dos veces por semana a subir mercado y suministros desde la carretera hasta el proyecto.
Las tareas dentro del programa de voluntariado general pueden incluir:
- Apoyo en la finca orgánica
- Apoyo en proyectos de reforestación

Travellers on the farm have the opportunity to spend time around el macanal river in San Rafael, Antioquia--getting to know a small community of Colombians and immigrants living in the Antioquian mountains. We are trying new farming techniques, new types of construction and in general trying to learn new things as often as possible.

As many of our volunteer oportunities will change with the season as well as with the skills a volunteer brings to the table, it is a bit difficult to describe the daily tasks of all volunteers. That said, we expect 5 hours of good help five days a week!

On the farm we have several dormitories, and private rooms depending on our availability and your preference!

Our farm is located on the river el Macanal in San Rafael, Antioquia. We are quite isolated, but surrounded by beautiful nature. With ten beautuiful swimming spots, and a waterfall on the property, the surrounding nature should keep you occupied in your freetime. There is also an eco lodge on the property with a bar, live music, and restaurant for some weekend entertainment. The town of San Rafael is about an hour walk away, or a ten minute walk and 15 minute tuc tuc drive.

Typically are internet is stable. We have a local internet provider for the entrance of the hotel and starlink in the area of the restaurante. We are in a rural area with power outages and storms, so every few weeks we are without internet for at least a few hours while maintenance is being done or while there are big storms.

Wir hatten eine wundervolle Zeit. Die Besitzer sind sehr freundlich und flexibel. wir haben morgens 3 Stunden gearbeitet und danach hat man freie Zeit um sich zu entspannen, zum River zu gehen etc. Das Essen war auch sehr lecker. The eco lodge is in a beautiful location right next to a river and in the mountains. After work you can go swimming and hiking. Amazing experience and lovely Workaway. It was my first Workaway experience and I'd definitely do it again. The work was fun and meaningful and the food was sooo good. Knowing a little Spanish beforehand would be ideal but otherwise this is a good place to learn.

I stayed one week in Rito del Rio and wish I would have stayed longer! Jesse, Paula and everyone else from the stuff are just amazing! 3 hour work in the morning is totally fine! Had the most magical two weeks while working for Jesse and his incredible team. The work can be quite physical at times but is very rewarding and it varies between planting, weeding, making beds for vegetables, making compost and many more fun activities. Lisa was one of the sweetest volunteers we have had stay with us. She stayed for a few weeks, and was a great help. She's organized, a hard worker, and genuinely a nice person to have around. We all we're sad to see her leave and would welcome her back any day. We would recommend her without a doubt for any of your projects!

My stay at hosts was really nice! Every day we worked 3 hours in the morning on the farm where we either would weed, plant, dig etc. The rest of the day we could just relax, take a swim in the river or go to the cute village San Rafael! The 3 meals are good and made with the vegetables of the garden :). Could recommend this place!!

I volunteered at Jesses place for 3 weeks and had a great time. The place is really incredible surrounded by mountains with a river and lush forests.
There’s always cool projects in the works from organic gardening to woodworking.
