Descripción
Ya hala! - we are a colorful, female-led, warm-hearted 3-generation Bedouin household that loves connecting with people from all over the world.
I, Fatima, am a 56-year old mother of 2 and grandma of 5 lovely kids aged 14 to 3. Whilst my daughter is unmarried and lives with me on the ground floor, my son and his wife as well as their children live upstairs in the same building.
His 4 girls are all in school and very ambitious, each of them with her own unique strengths and distinct but equally adorable character. They love to read, play and help around the house, and go on small family trips for pick nicks or to Aqaba / Wadi Rum from time to time. And then there is little Hamoude (Mohammad) - a most loving, very creative boy who has a love for Western music, hide and seek games, and family gatherings.
I myself am blessed to be one of the few community members who still grew up in the caves of Petra, learning traditional handcrafts, baking traditional bread and cooking our famous large meals like Maqlouba or Mansaf. Whilst many family members work in tourism, my son works for the community but is also still keeping some goats and chicken, which you are welcome to join him on.
Important: As a woman, I only host other women.
As an experienced host who used to have her own rental and who regularly helps out with my brothers' tourist groups coming to Petra through his agency, I'll be able to help you navigate local customs, explore the hidden gems of the area, ensure you are safe and comfortable at all times, and teach you a lot about our heritage.
In return, we would love for someone to come and teach the kids (and maybe also me?) better English as the local school unfortunately is not very efficient.
You will have your own room with a bathroom and our home shall be your home whilst we will also be giving you space for time out from family life.

We can teach you about:
- Bedouin heritage and history
- History of Petra
- Making traditional food like bread, cheese, and cooking national meals like Mansaf, Maqluba
- Take you with us to social occasions like weddings
- Introduce you to Islamic culture, for example of you choose to come during Ramadan you are welcome to (but of course do not have to!) fast with us, learn how to pray etc. if this interests you.
- How to navigate Bedouin village culture ;)
- Goat keeping
- Herbal medicine
We are pretty used to foreigners but would love for the kids to learn more about the wider world around them - I am sure they will have lots of questions for you :)

The help consists of two things: You would teach the kids English in a playful, simple manner. It's mostly about getting them interested in a language exchange and to practice vocabulary and grammar plus repeating simple words. You would also help me in the household, light chores like cleaning the living room and the floors. As I am already a bit older I appreciate that a lot.
We'd love to teach the kids in the house English - speaking, writing, vocabulary, grammar. The kids have their own books but the school is not walking them through them thoroughly, so they need some extra explanation, exercises, and accountability. We'd also like for them to get used to actively speaking English on a regular basis.
They are currently aged 14, 12, 10, 8 and 3.
You can of course also teach them any other subjects. Especially during the long summer holidays, as there is nothing much to do here in the village.
As my English is also not that good in written (a friend is helping me write all of this ;) - I would also appreciate some help answering requests here on workaway and just managing my online presence as well as helping me get better at this. )

Since few people in this house speak English, we are an excellent place to teach you colloquial arabic on the go and get you from learning ing to actually speaking. Many people have already made tremendous progress by staying with us. At the same time, my English may not be grammatically correct, but we will be able to talk about most topics and understand each other. I (Fatima) have been to school here only until 6th grade, so I could need help in improving my reading and writing.
Alojamiento
You have two options for sleeping: a room at the back of the house to yourself, with bedouin mattresses on the floor and a bathroom with western toilet and hot water directly next to it. There you also have a small terrace where you can go outside and enjoy the sun. You can also lock the room and the bathroom.
Or the other room in the middle of the house with a real bed BUT you have to share the room with Fatma and her sister.
In the evenings, we like to gather together and enjoy some tea with friends and other family members passing by spontaneously for a little chit chat.
The village will be a bit noisy at nights because of the animals and children playing until late so take your earplugs with you.
We do not have WiFi in the house but you can purchase a data bundle from orange that will enable you to have reliable internet connection on your devices (other phone providers may not have good signal in the south of jordan).
The house has a big kitchen with a washing machine, 2 living rooms, another bathroom and another terrace which you will be sharing with me and my daughter who tends to stay by herself. The kids are coming down regularly and you are welcome to go and see them upstairs in their flat anytime.
We are very centrally located in the village with mini markets in 3minute distance walking, as well as a few other local stores like fast food restaurants, a dry clean, phone store, souvenir etc. - for bigger errands you would have to take a cab for 2-4 JOD to the nearby town Wadi Musa, you can find pretty much anything there from a Gym or swimming pools to arabic sweets. We tend to go there once or twice per week.
On school days, they will be busy in the mornings, but in the holidays and on weekends they are free all day. It would be great if you could work around that schedule (for example you explore the area in the morning or cook with me, whatever you feel like, and keep your work with teaching for the afternoons).
We provide arabic / Bedouin breakfast, lunch and dinner and are happy to adjust to dietary preferences like vegetarian diets etc. Plus we make traditional tea all day long of course ;)
Cooking is my passion and I am happy to teach volunteers our traditional dishes as part of the cultural exchange as described on our profile. Let me know if you need any more specific information.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions and queries any time!
Ideally you will stay at least a week, up to two or three weeks.
If you arrive by plane in Ammann, you can rent a car directly at the airport or take the airport taxi to Wadi Musa (or directly to the town which is a small village near Wadi Musa / Petra, just show them the location), it will be 78 JD by taxi.

You will have to bring your own mobile data bundle but if works perfectly stable for zoom etc if you get it from Orange. It's quite affordable as well. The room has a proper desk and office chair :) We recommend noise canceling headsets though as walls are quite thin in this village and you may hear the kids or people passing by occasionally. We are happy to accommodate and adjust for your meeting times though and try to be quiet, just do let us know.

Espacio para aparcar autocaravanas
There is a bigger parking space right in front of our house, however it's quite a public and hence not very private area. Do let us know about your exact setup so we can get you as comfortable as possible.

Podría aceptar mascotas
We are open to pets, however as we are a Muslim household we prefer to keep dogs outside the house. You may keep yours in your room though. It is also not very common here to walk around the village as a woman just to walk your pet, plus there is lots of stray dogs around. So if you have a bigger dog who needs to walk a lot it is probably best if you have your own car and go into the surrounding nature rather than walking it in the village itself. There is also a lot of stray cats, we currently keep 3 kittens ourselves. Our goats and chicken stay at a shelter 10 minutes walking distance from our house. If you have any pets you would like to bring, simply discuss with us if and how we can make it work. :)
