We’re looking for an energetic couple and/or single person ( we can comfortably accommodate up to 3 people in 2 separate rooms) who enjoys getting their hands dirty and ideally has an interest in permaculture, organic gardening and sustainable living. We have a neglected verge that we’d love to transform into a thriving organic vegetable garden, along with planting native trees and shrubs to create a welcoming habitat for our local birds and wildlife. If you enjoy gardening, creating beautiful spaces and seeing things grow, we’d love your help!
A little bit about us 🌿
Welcome to our little piece of paradise in Dawesville, Western Australia.
We are Marta and Breffni, a married couple who have many years of hospitality experience between us. We previously owned a café, and Breffni is a chef by trade, with around 30 years of experience in the kitchen.
We genuinely enjoy meeting people from different countries and cultures and sharing our home, food and way of life with others. We love cooking, gardening, being outdoors and generally living a more self-sufficient, “homesteading” lifestyle. We try to follow permaculture principles wherever we can and enjoy making the most of what we grow.
Giving back to our community ❤️
Giving back to our local community is something that is important to us.
Every Thursday, we volunteer, where we help collect surplus food and prepare care packages for members of our local community who may be doing it tough and could use a helping hand.
We really enjoy being involved in this wonderful community initiative. It is a very hands-on way of helping others and also connects us with people from all walks of life.
If our volunteers are interested, they are very welcome to come along with us on a Thursday and experience this side of Australian community life. It's a lovely opportunity to meet local people, help make a difference and see a little more of the community beyond the usual tourist experience.
For us, it fits naturally with the way we try to live — growing and sharing food, reducing waste, looking after our community and helping where we can. 🌿❤️
Our home is on a peaceful ¼-acre property, approximately one hour south of Perth CBD, nestled between the Harvey Estuary and the ocean. We are just 5 minutes from The Cut Golf Course and Pyramids Surf Beach, with plenty of beautiful places to explore nearby.
Life here 🌱
We grow our own organic vegetables, have fruit trees, chickens and a worm farm, and spend a lot of time growing, harvesting and preserving our own food.
We make many things ourselves, including jams, pickles, chutneys, granola, yoghurt, pesto, lemon butter and other preserves. The list seems to get longer every year!
Marta also makes her own natural soaps, cleaning products, cosmetics and body lotions.
Depending on the season, there is always something happening in the garden — planting seeds, weeding, mulching, harvesting, watering, general garden maintenance and various other jobs that come with keeping a small homestead going.
What your stay will be like 🏡
You will have your own private room with a queen-size sofa bed (for couples) single bed ( for single person) and your own private bathroom and toilet.
We want you to feel comfortable here, and you can be as independent as you like. Alternatively, you are very welcome to become part of our daily life and, at times, join us with our extended family.
We enjoy sharing an evening meal together, and we would love you to join us for dinner when we are cooking. Ingredients for breakfast and lunch will be provided, and you simply prepare these meals for yourself.
On your days off, we encourage you to get out and explore the beautiful Peel region. On those days, you would provide your own meals.
We are happy to be flexible with the timing of your help so that you have plenty of opportunity to explore and enjoy your stay. We generally ask for an average maximum of 4 hours of help per day, with the actual timing being flexible depending on what needs doing and your plans.
Help may include:
Gardening, planting and harvesting
Weeding and mulching
Helping with preserving and preparing our home-grown produce
General jobs around the property
Cleaning and household tasks
Helping prepare an evening meal
Other mutually agreed tasks
The work changes throughout the year, so there is always something different to do.
Your own space
As you will be staying in our home rather than a hotel, we ask that you keep your bedroom and bathroom clean and tidy during your stay.
Before you leave, we ask you to wash the bed linen and towels you have used and leave your bedroom and bathroom clean and tidy for the next person.
Things to see & do in your spare time 🌊🌿
One of the great things about staying with us is that there is so much to see and do within easy reach of our home. Whether you love the outdoors, keeping fit, relaxing, exploring, shopping, art, food or simply enjoying a beautiful beach, there is something for everyone.
🌊 Beaches & the ocean
We are surrounded by beautiful beaches and waterways.
Pyramids Beach – just minutes from our home and a beautiful place for swimming, surfing, walking or watching the sunset.
Avalon Beach and other nearby beaches are great for exploring the coastline.
Silver Sands Beach and the Mandurah beaches are easily accessible by car.
Swimming, surfing, fishing and beach walks are all popular local activities.
Dawesville is tucked between the Indian Ocean and the Peel-Harvey Estuary, so there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy both the ocean and calm waterways.
🐬 Dolphins & waterways
Mandurah is famous for its wild bottlenose dolphins, which live in the waterways year-round.
You can often spot them from the foreshore or around the canals, or take a dolphin-watching cruise from Mandjar Bay.
Kayaking, canoeing, boating and fishing are also popular ways to explore the waterways and surrounding wetlands.
🚶 Walking, hiking & nature
There are lots of beautiful places to walk and explore.
Walk along the Harvey Estuary near our home.
Explore the Dawesville Channel and surrounding wetlands.
Discover walking trails around Yalgorup National Park.
Visit Lake Clifton and see the fascinating ancient thrombolites.
Explore the Giants of Mandurah, a collection of enormous wooden sculptures hidden throughout the Peel region.
Birdwatching and wildlife spotting are popular around the estuary and wetlands.
The Giants are particularly fun because you can turn it into a bit of an adventure, travelling around the region looking for the different sculptures.
🚲 Cycling & outdoor adventures
There are numerous bike paths and scenic routes around Mandurah and the Peel region. Bring a bike if you have one, or look into local bike hire.
For those who like a little more adventure, there are opportunities for kayaking, boating, fishing and other water-based activities.
🧘 Yoga, Pilates & keeping fit
If keeping active is important to you, there are plenty of options around Mandurah.
You can try local yoga and Pilates classes, including Wise Moves Yoga & Pilates in Falcon, and Pilates studios in Mandurah such as Best Body Pilates.
There are also gyms and fitness centres around Mandurah, including 24-hour options, as well as outdoor exercise equipment in local parks.
The City of Mandurah also runs free outdoor yoga and fitness classes at certain times of the year, suitable for different ages and abilities.
⛳ Golf
Golf lovers are very well catered for!
We are only around 5 minutes from The Cut Golf Course, an impressive course overlooking the ocean.
There are also other golf courses around Mandurah and further north towards Secret Harbour and Port Kennedy.
🎨 Art, culture & creativity
Mandurah has a surprisingly vibrant arts scene.
You can visit local galleries and exhibitions, including Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah, Emma Blyth Gallery and other smaller galleries and creative spaces.
There are also pottery and creative workshops around Mandurah and Falcon for anyone who enjoys making things.
Mandurah hosts art exhibitions, festivals, workshops, markets and cultural events throughout the year.
🛍️ Markets & local produce
There are several local markets and events throughout the year.
Our own Peel Produce Market is held at the Dawesville Foreshore every Saturday, with local produce, artisan products, food, coffee and live music.
The Mandjar Markets are held on the Mandurah Foreshore on Sundays during their seasonal months, with handmade goods, food, entertainment and local stallholders.
🎬 Entertainment & going out
Mandurah has plenty of cafés, restaurants, bars and waterfront dining.
There is also Reading Cinemas Mandurah for a movie night, along with live entertainment and performances at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
Mandurah also has regular festivals, food events, live music, markets and community events, so there is usually something happening.
☕ Slow days & doing absolutely nothing!
And of course, sometimes the best way to spend a day is simply to grab a coffee, walk along the foreshore, sit by the water, read a book, swim at the beach or watch the sunset.
Mandurah is a very relaxed part of Western Australia, and there are plenty of beautiful places where you can simply slow down and enjoy being here.
🚆 Exploring further
If you would like to venture further afield, Mandurah train station provides access to Perth and the wider metropolitan area.
Perth is around an hour away by car, or you can travel north by train from Mandurah and spend the day exploring the city.
We are happy to help you work out how to get around and will have information available about local attractions, walks, beaches, transport, markets and other things to do.
We really want our volunteers to enjoy their time here, not just work! We are happy to be flexible with the timing of your daily help so you can make the most of your days off and experience the beautiful Peel region.
A few things to know ❤️
We would ideally like to host for at least one to two weeks, although we are flexible for the right person.
We eat meat, but are very happy to accommodate vegetarians.
We have a small, friendly dog called Honey, a Cavoodle, who is very much part of the family.
Wi-Fi is available and you are welcome to use it for normal internet use. We just ask that you don't download movies or large amounts of music, as our data usage is limited.
We are looking for people who are respectful, friendly, reasonably independent and happy to contribute to a shared household.
No children, pets, drugs or smoking, please.
Most importantly, we want you to enjoy your time with us. We aren't looking for someone simply to come and work — we'd love to share our home, food, knowledge and little slice of Australian life with you while you experience everything this beautiful part of Western Australia has to offer.
We look forward to welcoming you! 🌿 -
