Some places are built from bricks and timber. Others are built from memories, hope, and the people who refuse to give up. It is one of those places.
Life doesn't always follow the path we imagine. Along the way, we have had to say goodbye to people who should have been part of this journey, and some chapters of our lives ended far sooner than we ever expected. There were moments when it felt as though this old mill, like some of our dreams, might slowly fade away.
But some dreams are simply too important to abandon.
Instead of letting this place become a reminder of what was lost, we chose to make it a place where new stories begin.
My name is Franziska, and together with my eleven-year-old daughter Rosalie, I live on this historic farm in western Hungary. For the past four years, we have been living in a small mobile home while restoring the old farmhouse step by step. It isn't the easiest way to live—but it is one we have chosen because we believe this place deserves a future.
Every season brings us a little closer to the dream we see when we look beyond the unfinished walls.
It is home to rescued horses, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs, cats and many other animals. A small river winds through the property, old fruit trees still bear fruit every summer, vegetables grow in our gardens, and almost every month brings another new project. We grow much of our own food using biodynamic principles, bake fresh bread, build healthy soil through composting and continue learning how to live a little more sustainably every year.
Our vision reaches far beyond simply renovating a farmhouse. We want to create a place where people reconnect with nature, animals, meaningful work and with themselves. A place that feels alive. A place where every person who visits leaves something behind—whether that's a new idea, a helping hand, a friendship or simply a happy memory.
No two days here are exactly alike. Every morning begins with caring for the animals before we share breakfast and plan the day together. Depending on the season, you might help feed horses, goats and sheep, plant vegetables, harvest fruit, restore old buildings, repair fences, work in the greenhouse, care for our orchards, plant trees or bring new creative ideas to life around the farm.
Whenever possible, we try to match projects with your interests and strengths. Some people love working with animals, others enjoy construction, gardening or practical problem-solving. We believe that work becomes meaningful when people feel connected to what they are creating. Rather than simply completing tasks, we want you to understand why they matter.
Many volunteers arrive expecting to spend a few weeks helping on a farm. Most leave having learned far more than they expected. Depending on your interests, you may learn about horses and animal care, bread baking, gardening, self-sufficiency, sustainable food production, restoration work, tractor driving or many practical skills that have become increasingly rare in modern life. We believe everyone arrives with something to teach, and everyone leaves having learned something new.
Life here isn't only about work. Sharing meals is an important part of our everyday life. Fresh homemade bread is almost always on the table, and whenever possible we cook together using vegetables from our garden and food produced on the farm. In the evenings we often sit by the river, cool off in the swimming pool during summer, play board games, talk for hours or simply enjoy the peace that country life offers.
Our volunteers stay in a cosy camper beside the river with its own terrace, compost toilet, garden shower and fenced outdoor area. It is a simple but beautiful place for anyone who enjoys waking up surrounded by nature, birdsong and fresh air. One of our many dreams is to create several unique guest accommodations around the farm, and perhaps you'll even help us build them.
More than anything else, we are looking for kind-hearted people. You don't need to know everything before you arrive. You don't need to be perfect. But farm life only works when people can rely on one another. We value kindness, responsibility, curiosity, good communication and the willingness to contribute as part of a team.
If you're simply looking for the easiest place to complete your volunteer hours, we may not be the right host.
But if you're looking for a place where you'll learn practical skills, work alongside people who genuinely enjoy sharing their knowledge, become part of everyday family life, care for animals, create something meaningful with your own hands and help shape a dream that continues to grow year after year...
...then we would be honoured to welcome you.
Because it is not a finished place.
It grows with every season, every project, every person who believes in it—and with everyone who leaves a small piece of their heart here. Maybe you'll stay for just a few weeks. Maybe you'll leave with new skills, lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories.
And maybe you'll become part of a story that proves some dreams are simply too important to give up.

We believe that the greatest part of cultural exchange isn't sightseeing—it's sharing everyday life.
By living and helping us, you'll experience rural life in Hungary from the inside. You'll become part of our daily routines, share meals with us, celebrate small successes, and discover what it's really like to build a life and restore a historic farm from the ground up.
Depending on your interests, you may learn about horse care, riding, sustainable gardening, bread baking, self-sufficiency, animal husbandry, restoration, machinery, and many practical skills that are becoming increasingly rare today.
Just as importantly, you'll experience a different pace of life. Around the dinner table, during long conversations by the river, or while doing tasks together on a project, cultural exchange happens naturally. Many of our volunteers arrive as strangers and leave as friends.
Of course, there is plenty to explore beyond the farm. The region offers beautiful cycling routes, thermal baths, historic towns, forests and lakes. If you enjoy fishing, hiking or simply discovering the Hungarian countryside, we're always happy to point you in the right direction or join you whenever time allows.
Our hope is that you'll leave not only with new skills, but also with unforgettable memories, lasting friendships and a deeper appreciation for nature, community and simple living.

No two days are ever the same here.
Life on a living farm changes with the seasons, the weather, and whatever exciting project we're working on at the time. Rather than giving everyone the same routine, we try to match tasks with your interests and strengths whenever possible.
Every day begins with caring for the animals. Together with our team, you'll help feed horses, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats. If you enjoy spending time with animals, you'll also have plenty of opportunities to groom them, take them for walks, help with training, or simply enjoy being around them.
If you prefer gardening, you'll find endless opportunities to get your hands in the soil. We grow a large variety of vegetables, fruits and herbs, build healthy soil through composting, expand our gardens every year and are currently developing an aquaponics system in our semi-underground greenhouse. Depending on the season, you might be sowing seeds, harvesting vegetables, planting trees or creating entirely new growing areas.
If you're more interested in practical projects, you'll quickly feel at home here. We're constantly restoring our historic farm, building fences and shelters, improving paddocks, renovating old buildings and bringing new ideas to life. There is always something to build, repair or create.
For those who love learning new skills, it offers far more than ordinary farm tasks. Depending on your interests, you may learn about horse care and riding, bread baking, sustainable gardening, self-sufficiency, machinery, tractor driving, maintenance, restoration projects and many other practical skills that are becoming increasingly rare today.
We don't expect you to know everything before you arrive. Curiosity, motivation and a willingness to learn are far more important than experience. Whether you stay for two weeks or several months, our hope is that you'll leave with new skills, wonderful memories and the feeling that you've helped build something meaningful.

As the place continues to grow, our accommodation is evolving too.
Depending on the time of year and how many volunteers are staying with us, you'll either have your own cosy camper beside the river or a room in our historic farmhouse, which is currently being restored step by step.
The camper offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature, complete with a small terrace, compost toilet, outdoor shower and a fenced garden area. The farmhouse, on the other hand, is simple and still very much part of our ongoing restoration project. It isn't luxurious, but it is clean, comfortable and full of character.
We believe in being completely honest about where we are on our journey. If you're looking for a modern hotel, we're probably not the right place. But if you enjoy authentic places with history, don't mind a little imperfection and like being part of a project that's constantly evolving, you'll feel right at home.
One day, we hope to create several unique guest accommodations around the farm. Perhaps you'll even help build them—and years later be able to say, "I helped create that."
