Hello Everyone!
We are Marco and Eduarda, we love each other very much. :-) Sometimes Marco´s son Mathies is on board as well. We live on our sailing ship. At this moment we are in the south of Portugal, Portimão.
Marco and Mathies sailed for 10 years around the world with our ship and we are now since a few years in Portugal. Later coming year the journey continues and the three of us, and some crew, will sail over to Brasil and Caribbean and further on. Weheew!!
About the cultural exchange. The sailing world is a culture on its own, for many people desired, although unknown. So this might be your chance to get to know more about the world of sailing and everything that comes and goes with it. We can tell you, it´s not only joy and happiness:-) No no! When you´re not a millionaire, but just a carpenter like Marco, than its just hard work to live your dream on a 68 year old timber boat.
What we offer is a unique cultural exchange of: hands on practical knowledge and skills, experience and a unique lifestyle. We can teach you, if you have a technical background, everything you want to know about sailing, traditional boat maintenance, navigation, system maintenance and much more.
Besides we enjoy good stories, eating together, play games like volleyball and cards, (Catan is our favourite boardgame at the moment), fishing, travelling, watersports, boat tours with dinghy, the ocean itself and everything you can imagine around it. Often we trough out a bbq with a drink and some music and we often have great evenings together.
So what we look for is: First of all people that feel atracted to and are curious about the sailing culture, the ocean and how it is to live on a traditional ship. But also, as we said before, boatlife goes hand in hand with physical work. So it`s necessary that you have a technical background in, painting, engineering, construction, eletrical work, woodwork, or general maintenance. However, a curious mind, a hands-on attitude, willingness to learn, and the ability to work as part of a team from about 7 people are just as important. Besides we also need to take care of our living space, keep it cosy and clean incluing cooking meals for the crew. We take turns in this, altough cooking skills are very welcome, just as musicians.
Whats the plan?!! The ship is currently on anchor in Portimao and stil mobile and sailing, so this is your chanche to sail a bit before dry docking. Around the 16th of November the ship will be dry docked here in south Portugal for yearly maintanace. Before that time, while still afloat, we need to prepare for the dry docking. The masts and bow sprit will be lifted out this year for maintannace.
We have lots of sanding and painting to do, the rudder and propellor will be taken out, a oil seal on the gearbox needs to be replaced, electrical cables from the masts need to be replaced, antennas and much more. Half or end of January the ship wil go back afloat and after reconecting the masts and bowsprit we can sail again a throw a nice party to celebrate our victory!!
We have a strong prefence for people at least 25 years old.

You’ll have the opportunity to experience what it's like to live on a ship. A vessel like ours always requires care and attention, so maintenance is a continuous process—and you’ll get to learn some valuable skills along the way.
Besides we sailed the ship all around the world for the last 10 years, we got plenty stories to tell, and experiences to share
When we head out to sea, and if you're interested, I’d be happy to teach you everything about sailing, navigation, weather patterns, safety, tender driving, and more. With years of experience, I genuinely enjoy sharing my knowledge with eager and curious newcomers.

Alojamiento
The ship is 28 meters over all and has plenty space and everything on board. Besides all the safety and navigation systems: 2 toilets, 2 hot showers, heating system for the colder days, good beds (you will have your own cozy cabin), fully equipped kitchen, plenty water and electricity, sound system and even a movie projector. So don't think it's a sort of survival here, it's very comfy here on our own little island.
i provide 3 meals a day, -

I learned so much on this boat as Marco was very kind to show and explain how it all works.
I learned to stitch the sails, ride a dingie, tie some knots and a bit of navigation of the boat.

I spend two weeks on the boat and had a great time and a lot of laughs with Marco and the workaway crew. Marco is a good host, and you will be well taken care of.
