    Greetings dear one,

    Welcome.

This is a letter from me, Brittany, on behalf of my family, to share an invitation with you.
We are calling in our village for the upcoming Green Season! We are looking for individuals who can make a minimum two week commitment to living and working in village with our dynamic pack here.

Our home, Drumming Waters, is a wild sanctuary & sacred homestead on Mnidoo Mnis/Manitoulin Island. This Place homes 11 acres of ancient limestoney escarpment on the Water’s edge of Lake Huron. We tend food gardens, a flock of chicken & ducks, & live well with reverence for the holy wild that animates this shoreline. Brittany, Matt, Pebble (Mother Dog), Loon (Son Dog), 10 chickens & 4 ducks all call this place home.

We are a couple remembering old ways of life, hand-craft skills, sacred farming and the grandeur of simple village living. Brittany practices various hand-crafts including basket weaving, hide tanning, sewing & ritual farming. She has a healing arts practice which involves some travel as well as healings & teachings on the land. Matt works as a carpenter and loves to create music. He is passionate about growing food, tending animals, mushroom cultivation and creating a place for open hearts to connect.

The land we live with is stunningly beautiful, and deliciously set in the deep wild. We are about 20 minutes from the nearest town, situated at the end of a lane appropriately named Narrows Trail. We are off-grid here, and have equipped ourselves with conveniences over the years; we have a robust solar setup in the main cabin & a well providing good water for us.

We are both a homestead and a wild sanctuary. We have homestead tasks happening daily; livestock care, seed & garden tending, and we also host retreats/medicine immersions.

We are seeking additional hands & hearts to contribute to the co-creation of the vision of Drumming Waters as well as to feed the individual’s spiritual/human/village growth. We are also looking for the right person who may be capable of farmsitting Drumming Waters while we tend to some off-island obligations.

We maintain a weekly council on the land where all of us come together & open space to hear what's present for each of us, and where we sense the direction of energy should go in the upcoming week.

Slow, connected, intentional living that is in harmony with nature has been and continues to be a North Star for us. The pace of our lifestyle honours the other-than-human world and creates a fertile opportunity to slow down, connect with self & the Earth.

    We welcome you Here.

To find us in the Great Story of All, we say Mnidoo Mnis. The language of the Land here is Anishnaabemowin. This is the language that the land birthed, the language the Trees, Birds, Mosses, and Humans use to speak to this Place in the original tongue. The Anishnaabeg, Odawa, Potawatomi and Ojibwe people are the stewards of this place. In the understanding of how to conduct ourselves as a human here, we seek guidance from these ones who are the carriers of the original agreement between the people & place.

We each carry many skills and teachings that are in potential to be shared including: basketry, hide tanning and sewing, organic/sacred gardening, old-time cooking skills/food alchemy (fermenting dairy, veggies, grains), carpentry/eco building, livestock caring, bodywork, plant medicine, body biochemistry teachings, birth arts, women's work, culture re-formation (inside out) teachings and so much more.

Together we will create beauty with our projects as we explore belonging to place through the practice of ancient and traditional village life. We will share nourishing foods, celebrate life through music, story & movement, and enjoy the simplicity of a wholistic village existence.

The idea of the projects is to have additional hands & hearts contributing to the co-creation of the vision of Drumming Waters as well as to feed the individual’s spiritual/human/village growth.

We will take time to engage in discussion about what it is that both of us hope to receive in this exchange; this will create our shared agreements. The exchange will look something like contributing 20 hours a week to projects in exchange for lodging & staple food pantry items.

Here is a collection of projects/musings/other important things that have the potential to fill the days here:

+ Sacred/Organic farming & food forest creation (planting, harvesting, propagating, garden expansion, orchard cultivation, building compost/Hegel mounds, watering, offering gifts of beauty to the garden)
+ Trail creation & tending (blazing trail, creating stone people/trail markers, cutting branches, making fires, clearing deadfall)
+ Building projects - outdoor kitchen construction, teaching lodge, fence weaving
+ Plant medicine harvesting & processing (wild & garden plant harvesting, creating medicinal & herbal tinctures/salves/oils/salts/vinegars/teas)
+ Tending the Storehouse/food alchemy - helping to can, ferment & prepare foods for winter storage
+ Cooking & feast creation -helping to feed our small village
+ Creating delicious offerings of beauty & art
+ We greatly value the opportunity of having someone who is able to care for our animals at times (chicken + duck flock & two dogs)
+ Various miscellaneous tasks related to our old-timey life in the deep woods

We are a private homestead. The work we engage in here is in the spirit of home-grown village living.

You might be a good fit if:
    + You’re interested in land-based living & traditional skills
+ You enjoy time in Deep Nature
+ You’re looking for an opportunity to learn & grow & learn & grow...
+ You strive towards maintaining an open heart & good relations

Eloquence of speech is one of the most delicious offerings we make as human beings! While we are both currently monolingual, we welcome the opportunity to hear other languages spoken, and, maybe even some music from other places!

  • Alojamiento

    Alojamiento

We have two types of accommodations available for these stays: our little lodge, and tent camping on the land.

    Little Lodge Details:
We have a quaint little cabin here; small in size, 8 feet x 12 feet, with a loft accessible by ladder spanning half the cabin. There is a double bed in the loft, and some basic furniture downstairs.
The cabin is “no grid”, meaning, there is no power or water running inside.
There is an ethernet cable running to the lodge which allows for computer access to the internet.
There are some basic kitchen functions in the little lodge, like a Coleman cook stove.
The loft has a wonderful view of the water.
*We would prefer to offer this space to someone who is interested in joining our village for a longer stay.

    Camping on the Land:
Many spots to choose from and ample oceany-style lakefront to dream beside. We have tents here that you may borrow if you do not have your own.

    Kitchen:
There are windows of time that access to our main kitchen in the house here is available to you (an outdoor kitchen will be available soon).

    Washroom arrangements:
Look something like an outhouse as your bathroom source, and pockets of time that we have open to our bathroom inside where we have a shower and a bathtub.

You are also welcome to solar electricity available in our main cabin.

Outdoor Shower opens up once the weather warms up (May-October).

Sauna - We have a small outdoor sauna available to you as well!

  • Algo más...

    Algo más...

As our place is quite remote, you might like to have your own vehicle while you're here. We do have a couple of vehicles here and Matt is frequently going into town for work (so rides to places is quite possible).

Off the property the island is budding with amazing places to hike, waterfalls to visit, weekly community concerts, powwows and so much more.

There is an abundance of magic on the land to explore in your free time. One of the remarkable realities of living on a homestead on the water is how accessible swimming and relaxing between the work of the day is. There is a sauna, many special fire pits and ample wood throughout the land. We have hosted many guests over the years and the consistent thing we hear at the close of a stay is "wow, this place is very healing". That has been our experience and we are so blessed to live here and open this space for others to join us.

We welcome you here to experience this magic.

Thankyou for your big hearts and your consideration in joining our small village!

With open skies & softening soils,
    Brittany & Matt
