Hi lovers of the outdoors, of good food, or sustainable food growing! We are looking for some enthusiastic folks who love to work outdoors together. "We" are Babette and Mark.
If you want to be part of starting up a permaculture farm - come and help us! We have built and are managing a suburban permaculture food forest, 10 miles from downtown Boston; and have also bought 36 acres of field-and woodland in Montague, Western Massachusetts where we are going to start up a diversified permaculture farm.
We do fun projects like: raise chickens on kitchen compost, worms and leaves from the neighborhood; run the waterfall on our pond with solar; try out scything; build a hoop house; raise sheep; grow a whole field of berries with odd names (aronia anyone?). We are also serious about trying to make a real business out of a regenerative farm using permaculture principles.
This Summer and Fall (2021), we have room for workawayers to either stay and work at our urban food forest near Boston (house in the suburbs, with your own studio on the third floor) or in our new farm food forest in Montague (we have two small studios with a shared bathroom with compost toilet).
This is a great opportunity to be a part of building a regenerative farm from the ground up!
CoVid-19 update. Mark and Babette are both vaccinated and require any workawayers to have completed their full round of vaccine doses at least two weeks before arrival. Let’s keep everyone in the community safe and healthy!

We promise you will learn a lot about implementing permaculture in a temperate climate setting. This is an opportunity to learn about setting up a new permaculture garden and farm - all the work that goes into the early stages!
We do all our cooking from scratch with mostly local ingredients; we minimize our trash by reducing and recycling; both our house in Needham and the one on the farm run on solar for heating, lighting, etc. plus other carbon-reducing features, so this is also an opportunity to learn about green building and retrofitting.
Also, if you are not from the United States, you will learn about the American culture with us - and if you are shy about English, we speak German, French, and Dutch if necessary.
We would like to ask you to help a total of 16 hours per week; either two full weekdays per week on consecutive days or taking care of animals one hour per day and adding other work hours as mutually agreed.
We'll be working together - with Babette or, with one of the other work-aways or interns. We will be building, planting, pruning, watering, caring for baby chicks, weeding etcetera.
If you are staying at our studio near Boston we will be working together on our urban food forest; if you are staying at the farm, then we will be doing lots of new farm stuff - setting up fields of berries, building trellises and hoop houses, growing a flock of sheep etcetera.

If you are staying at the urban food forest, you will have a large, sunny room in our house in Needham (near Boston) on the third floor with your own bathroom.
If you opt to come to the farm two days per week, the accommodations will be very simple: a bed in our garden house (which also has various farm projects going on in it) with a shared bathroom (shower and composting toilet).
Mark and I like to have people around, and we've always enjoyed visitors or the people who stayed and worked with us in the past two years. We don't expect help cleaning up our junk, but we do expect everyone to clean up after themselves, and to help clean up when we've eaten together.
Our Needham house is 10 miles outside of Boston, a diverse and historical city that thrives thanks to the joining of many cultures and races. Our house is near the commuter rail line as well as a bus line to get you into Cambridge or Boston. On your days off, you can see the sights of Boston - visit the Harbor, walk the Freedom Trail, go see Harvard University and MIT, visit one of the world-class museums, or just stroll around the various funky and fun neighborhoods. If you have a car you can visit various historical sites going back 400 years, or go to one of our awesome beaches.
The work exchange includes meals with us and access to whatever food and beverages we have in our kitchen with the exclusion of alcoholic drinks.

Yes we have wifi.
There is lots of flat space where a campervan could be stationed for a limited time.
We have a very friendly dog, and if you have a friendly dog, they would probably get along! However, we do request only well-behaved and not too big dogs. Unfortunately, our dog thinks cats are great to chase so your cat would not be happy with us.
