Welcome to Our Home- an inspiration zone, where every day counts!
We have a lot to do, and we would love some help!
From our bases in the outskirts of Accra, bordering town & country, we have a range of activities for you to get involved with, and help us to organize- including education, agriculture and cultural events. We just hope that you can stay long enough to make a meaningful difference and have a life-enhancing experience.
Our living space in Pokuase is a quite green and lush, and we are immersed in the vibrant life of the local area. We encourage our Workawayers to engage with local people, share their culture and traditions, and try to find their niche amongst the community.
What Makes Our Place Special
-We have lived here for over 25 years and everyone in the area knows us! We have hosted the local residents group for meetings and seen our neighbours children married (or at least taking wedding photos) in our compound!
- Our place is very natural, and retreat full of trees, so you should be comfortable around chickens, butterflies, cats etc, including some goats. We are plant based so we do not eat any of the animals, they are more like pets, although we do give some chickens away at holidays.
-We organize events and our place is like a cultural centre, particularly in the large gardens at the back, and on our roof terrace. Unless you come during the Ban on Noise- in the month of May, which bans the playing of music or making noise, eg drumming - you will find us entertaining guests with one event or another, some cultural others just for socializing. We run a guest house from here, so many of the activities are to entertain our guests.
- We also run a 'holistic learning hub'- as we intended it – our community school which is about a 15 minute walk away. This is a learning space which promotes the African heritage, engages students in drama, music and teaches some practical skills, such as financial literacy. However, our focus is on academic excellence and student confidence.
- Although not in the thick of things, the surrounding areas of Pokuase- Kwabenya makes our place very convenient for those staying here- as it is full of markets, live music, cultural traditions and arts and crafts. We have bus stations taking you to all sides of Accra and out into the rural regions, and you can jump on a bus at the bottom of the hill and get to most places. You can also easily call an Uber from here as we are on the maps.
- We are very proud of our warm, welcoming atmosphere – We hope that Workawayers will feel accepted by us and our community as extended family, and not only as visitors. You can expect to experience authentic local hospitality, but you should also exercise caution when making friends. Best to get a second opinion from one of us before divulging any personal information or getting too familiar with anyone that you have just met.
Who We Are – Meet the People
- Nana and his wife– The guiding forces behind the various projects. Nana has appeared on numerous youtube channels as a guest, to share his practical know-how about getting things done in Ghana, and is a beacon of positive energy and resilience. His wife is the administrator, and does the unglamorous stuff! Nana is a Jamaican who has lived in Ghana for the past 30 years. He has many strings to his bow including being a musician, building contractor and mentor. His wife is an educator and enjoys farming. They both enjoy storytelling and have fun personalities. Nana is a great conversationalist and can out talk most people! They both enjoy sharing their travel experiences and insights into Ghanaian culture. Our Workawayers will be kept busy in meaningful projects helping them to continue to make their dreams a reality.
- Local staff and helpers – We have a friendly, hardworking team including our escort Ajingo who takes care of helping all guests find their way around, getting clothes made -he's also a tailor- and tour guide. The other staff take care of the apartments, facilities, and the gardens. We currently have a great Jamaican chef taking care of food preparation. He is also an entertainer with a couple of albums! At the school, we have a brilliant administrator, a caretaker, and of course teachers- all who look after our band of happy students. Each one of the staff contributes to community programs, and maintenance of the spaces.
Workawayers can help with the creation and social media promotion of our events and tours, as well as youth exchanges in collaboration with the school. We excited about progressing youth exchanges, including sports exchanges (football and basketball for now), and the Workawayers can help us to design the programs, fundraise or apply for grants, and with managing projects.
- Family and friends – Our space welcomes a mix of visitors, community members, and travelers from all over the world. There’s always laughter and music, although we also like our quiet and peace, especially on Saturdays when everything is closed for us here. Our roof terrace bar and restaurant is a great place for people to connect, and we definitely expect friends and other members of the Caribbean community in Ghana to drop by our cool hangout space.
Why You’ll Love Our Area
The local area is vibant, bustling in some parts, and very quiet (residential) in others. Some highlights include:
- There are traditional festivals particularly in August in our area, known as the traditional township of the Ga people – you can immerse yourself in the drumming, dance, and storytelling events as they take place around town or in Aburi Mampong. Depending on the time of year you visit, we can find you a traditional event to take part in.
- We are blessed to have a few local bustling markets –where you can easily shop for local provisions, mostly only seasonal foods, also handcrafted goods, and colorful cloth. Our markets are at Pokuase, but you can travel by bus to Nsawam, Adenta or Makola from the junction.
-why not try some 'Street food'– its quite safe to eat hot street food, like roast corn, or boiled corn, even a rice dish or fried yam or sweet potato. Or eat Jollof Rice or banku and Tilapia or okro at one of the numerous local 'spots' or 'chop bars' in and around Pokuase.
- As we are halfway between town and the village you can find some green spaces, but for rivers, and scenic trails you can take a by bus to Aburi, Adom waterfalls or out into the farming communities not too far away.
- We are not far from some of the major historical landmarks in Accra –for example, you can visit Rawlings Park, Independence Square in town by bus to central Accra; or venture to local towns like Nsawam which have their own history.

We think that language exchange is an important part of our cultural experience. You will definitely have the chance to practice Twi with our staff, and friends from within the community, while teaching us words and phrases from your own language. If you even want to practice some Jamaican Patois we won't laugh at you! We encourage natural conversations, whether it's while cooking, working in the gardens, or during evening discussions. We can arrange informal Twi lessons for you which will focus on useful vocabulary, greetings, and everyday phrases. This should help you to feel more engaged when interacting with the community. In return, we love learning about different languages and dialects from our guests, exchanging expressions, and even comparing cultural meanings behind words. Whether you're fluent or just starting, language exchange helps build connections and understanding.Alojamiento

Digital nomads are very welcome but should bear with us when it comes to Wifi connections, which can fluctuate. There are options for faster connection and we can help you set up with one of these if need be. But in general, our connections are good, but not as stable or as fast as in western countries.
