Living from the heart in the present moment and following the silent voice inside that is the higher self is much easier when we are in supportive company. We welcome volunteers who are interested in exploring spirituality and self-discovery, regardless of their religion, culture, or prior experience. If you are travelling this inner journey and interested in working on food growing, forest restoration, sustainable building, and daily life, you may find it a rewarding experience to stay here.

*We host only volunteers who have read the full profile carefully and feel a genuine alignment with our way of life*

    PRESENTATION

We are a small group of people living as an informal community. We have two sites and volunteers will have the opportunity to work at both locations. We harvest produce from our orchards and have a small food garden, and ongoing building projects. As we become more established, we will be expanding food production, using syntropic and biodynamic systems. The locations are both rural, with one close to town and the other quite remote.

In welcoming volunteers, we wish to share daily life, care for our environment together and support one another on the path towards simplicity, gratitude, kindness and respect for Mother Earth.

We recently acquired new land to care for, and the work will happen in both places depending on the needs.

The finca is on a beautiful land of fruit trees (olive, orange, lemon, nispero, avocado, almond, fig, persimmon and more) on the outskirts of Orgiva in Las Alpujarras. . Although near to town, the finca has the precious quality of quiet nature with birds singing and views of the mountains.

The finca is 15 minutes’ walk from the lively town of Orgiva. The area has many spiritual, holistic and alternative communities and families. Local events include music, kirtan, yoga, dance, singing, Taoist workshops, and many many more. Other local attractions are the mountains, coast (both around 30-45 minute drive), river pool with waterfalls, Tibetan Buddhist monastery, and a variety of hiking routes.

There is 5 hectares of pine forest and young orchard, mainly with olives. It is located uphill, 20 minutes’ drive from the finca. It has stunning views and lovely sunsets. The property is entirely off grid, with independent water and energy.

    TYPE OF TASKS

The main projects will be: to establish a new area of forest using the syntropic system; to set up a greenhouse and vegetable garden; and to build structures using sustainable building techniques, starting with a workshop. During the winter there will be the olive harvest. This is a newly acquired property, so in preparation for these projects the current work during October is clearing vegetation on the land, and emptying and cleaning the living spaces.

At the finca, we are caring for the trees, establishing a vegetable and flower garden using homa therapy and permaculture principles, watering, grass cutting, and maintenance of water channels. We are in the early stage of establishing a food forest, expanding on the many trees that are already here. There is also work harvesting, preserving and sowing seeds. There are daily tasks caring for the Temple. We have just started to insulate our newest eco building with cob and straw.

We also do charitable work – distributing food and clothes to those in need, and removing rubbish from the local river valley where we are planning a reforestation project.

    RHYTHM AND EXCHANGE

Volunteers are expected to work for 15 hours per week.

Sometimes the timing of work hours, or type of work, is dictated by the weather, for example if it rains. During the summer it is too hot to work outside during the middle of the day, so early starts are required.

Volunteers are not replacing locally hired workers or professionals. For example, the finca contracts work to a professional gardener and builders. The volunteer program supports cultural exchange, learning and sharing a lifestyle.

There is a fully equipped apartment for volunteers. The accommodation is comfortable with 3 rooms, one per volunteer.

    We provide towels and bedding.

Meals are not included in the exchange, volunteers buy their own food and prepare their meals. They also clean their own spaces and communal areas. Sometimes there are spontaneous shared meals with the whole community offered or on a potluck basis.

Supermarkets are 10 minutes’ walk from the finca with other shops and a weekly market 5 to 10 minutes further. To access town, trips are arranged for those who do not have their own transport.

We ask for a minimum stay of 4 weeks to give you time to settle in, get to know the place and people, and become comfortable with the tasks to make an effective contribution.

There is a daily schedule of communal activities from Monday to Friday:

Puja ceremony in the Temple or puja room at 0700 for 30-45 minutes, followed by silent sitting.

Gratitude Circle generally around 1030 for 10 minutes, where we express gratitude for whatever comes to mind. This is the only mandatory activity as it contributes so positively to the dynamics: it supports us to feel connected to each other and establishes a positive mindset for the day.

This is followed by a brief planning discussion about the work and any other matters.

Some evenings we gather for satsang (listening to spiritual teaching, either as a reading or on youtube) followed by discussion. Or kirtan (singing devotional songs or bhajans). Every Friday evening people from the wider local community gather for kirtan in town.

On special occasions there will be a ceremony such as Agnihotra or Abhishekam.

The hosts can give some guidance on spiritual practices such as silent sitting, japa, bhakti, hatha yoga or seva. Or you can receive guidance and support on your spiritual path from our teachers if you follow the teachers requirements. It is free of charge and works on donation basis.

At certain times of year there will be more ceremonies in the Temple to celebrate a particular festival.

The devotional activities are optional and volunteers are welcome to participate as much as they wish.

At the finca, the exercise machine, Temple, swimming pool and tipi are available for volunteers to use. We can lend work clothes and ceremony clothes. We can arrange access to the many local Telegram groups for events, rideshares and sale offers.

    ARE YOU A FIT?

We welcome volunteers who are open-minded and respectful. Along with a wish to be useful, some sensitivity is a much appreciated quality.

An intermediate level of English or Spanish is required.

The diet is vegetarian. People with specific requirements like gluten free or dairy free can be easily catered for, it just needs to be communicated. Only vegetarian food can be brought to the finca.

No alcohol, drugs and tobacco are allowed. We are not able to receive smokers. We ask volunteers not to take intoxicants during their stay, even outside working hours, to maintain a good level of focus and a natural state of awareness.

A healthy level of hygiene and cleanliness is expected. Clothing should be respectful and appropriate to circumstances, recognising that this place is dedicated to Self-realisation and that people of different ages and cultural backgrounds are present.

In case a volunteer is temporarily unable to participate in activities, we ask for open communication so we can adapt together.

We welcome volunteers who are emotionally stable and able to participate fully in daily life. If you are currently experiencing deep emotional or psychological challenges, this may not be the best time to join us as we are not qualified to provide support for serious psychological difficulties.

We should mention that we discourage the use of Reiki, energetic healing and psychic abilities like remote viewing or healing, as – to our knowledge – it involves mental powers and can result in karmic burdens. If you are strongly identified with those practices our place might not be the best fit for you.

It is a requirement that you have some form of health cover valid in Spain.

For your application please note that we recruit maximum one month ahead.

    WHO ARE WE?

Michael and Guta are physiotherapists and live part-time in Germany and part-time in the finca.

Bruno works as a care giver for the elderly and disabled and end of life, as well as an assistant carpenter and musician. His daughter Alma stays at the finca half of the time.
Ana has trained in holistic midwifery, ayurvedic nutrition and ecological farming. She works as an assistant carpenter and musician. Her daughter Aluna stays at the finca most of the time.
Vikram, who came originally as a volunteer, is now a permanent resident and is the main guardian. His background is in forestry, and main activities are nature restoration and establishing sustainable food production.
So we are a mix of Spanish, German, French, English and Danish and we speak mostly English and Spanish together.

There are also at the finca our very cuddly cat Miaou, another cat Mio, and Pico the magical peacock who appeared spontaneously on the land the day of a ceremony related to the peacock! And two cats, Kali and Durga.

If your Inner Guidance or intuition tells you that it may be a good place for you, then you are most welcome to get in touch!

We look forward to hearing from you, and we hope you will find your time with us supports you on your spiritual journey.
