Our famous hostel is situated right in the middle of the CBD in the entertainment precinct of Cape Town. We have been described as 'the soul of the Street' - and we hope that's a good thing!!?? Our hostel is a lovely old building at the top end of the street with a sunny and leafy courtyard, fantastic balconies with views onto signal hill and the busy streets. We are an 'old-school' hostel and differentiate ourselves from the new generation of 'poshtels'. We are all about communalism and laid back fun and adventure. We share meals and outings together, we party together (often!!!) and we treat guests and staff alike as party of our weird and wonderful family. It is a large hostel sleeping up to 80 guests and there is never a dull moment or a day without adventure.
Most of our paid staff are refugees from Zimbabwe and we ensure that our volunteer program supports these individuals and improves their skills and working conditions. Volunteers will never be used to replace paid workers but only to support them.
In our street level premesis we also support a group of 20 art vendors who come from across the African continent - we endeavor to use our volunteers to support these vendors and improve their working conditions. Whether this is helping them with specific projects or just making tea for everyone in the morning.

You will meet people from every corner of this world and will go on adventures with them in this incredible multi-cultural city. Cape Town is one of the most incredible, diverse, beautiful cities in the world and our hostel will provide you with the perfect base from which to explore it and many many many friends to explore it with.

We are currently looking for people with special skills like photography, videography and social media management to help train and upskill our staff.
However our standard program includes : Adventuring and guest animation! Hikes, Beach trips, Waterfront, Cape Point, Wine Tours, Clubbing Nights, picnics . Design your own party e.g. anything but clothes party - speed dating - karaoke- dress up parties - (discuss with staff which nights are available based on events calendar). Have a look through the receptionist tour folder so that you know what our preferred tours are.
Helping out in Sweeties Beerhall - Games - Guest Animation (NO BAR WORK)
Each night is different and so your duties will depend on what's happening that night. Managers might ask you to facilitate some games (beerpong / flipcup / karaoke ).
Family cooking nights - we try do these 3 times a week. Everyone contributes to a meal and you can showcase your local cuisine or help someone else prepare a meal.

Not only was this an incredible Workaway experience but it is also legitimately my most favorite place I have ever lived. I stayed here for two months and I’m already counting the days until I can come back!

I had the best time volunteering at the backpackers. It‘s the best place to meet new people, I‘ve been to quite a few hostels and none of them was as social as this place. The staff is amazing, welcoming and always up to fun.

I had an amazing time here! I spent five weeks there and it went by so fast! Everyone who work there is so funny and cool, I don't think you can find a better hostel with cooler staff!
