*Seeking: 1 volunteer from December onwards, must be willing to do some small construction, stone wall building, other jobs that require heavy lifting, and be okay with living in basic conditions in a humid climate (which can get down to 10 degrees at night*

We are Magnus and Lucy, an American-British couple working to create market gardens and a food forest on Flores, Azores. Magnus’s two sons, Odin and Mitra, live with us alternate weeks. Our farm is off-grid (electricity through solar and hydro) but we buy propane for cooking and some foods that we don’t produce. We are steadily clearing jungle land and replanting the cleared areas with invasive edible plants, following permaculture principles. An ongoing blog is kept which details the projects that we do yearly, and also gives details of the accommodation offered in the cabana.

We are a non-commercial farm and do not have hired help. Our current project priorities are finishing the interior of our home, building a solar tracker and water tank, constructing a chicken coop, clearing space to plant fruit trees, and preparing the gardens for spring planting. If you are interested in building safe and strong dwellings, electricity generation, and general permaculture, this is your opportunity to learn and lend a hand. We also very much welcome those with wood working experience and also those with skill in repairing stone walls.

If you are interested in staying at our farm, please send us a visit request and we will ask you some vital questions and require that you review our volunteer handbook. Please research our farm using the blog and also research the conditions you will be working in on Ilha das Flores. This is critical to ensuring you are suited to working at our farm and that you will enjoy and value your stay.

Typically, we ask for 4 hours of help daily, starting at 9am, from Monday to Friday. In the initial weeks of a volunteers stay at our farm, tasks generally involve moving materials and clearing jungle. For volunteers that stay long term (3+ weeks), tasks will evolve to include fine work in our gardens.

At the weekend, volunteers are free to go explore the island. Lunch is provided by us in our home at 1pm. When in season, we can offer homemade wine at lunch. We prefer to do the cooking ourselves, and volunteers are responsible for washing dishes. Volunteers cook their own dinner in the cabana, using the fully equipped kitchen, and we will provide farm ingredients (although this is limited as we are still expanding our garden space).

The cabana is a dry and cosy 2-level wooden bungalow, with a sleeping loft upstairs and a kitchen downstairs. We can provide a mattress, sleeping bag, and blanket, but please do arrive with your own sleeping bag – particularly in the colder months. The cabana has a dry/composting toilet outside, with a roof as shelter. There is no electricity, but we do have a solar light downstairs for use at night. However, for many days we can have no sun so it is necessary to bring a torch. The cabana is close to where the chickens are situated, and we trust volunteers to feed the chickens for us during their stay.

Our home is a 5 minute walk downhill from the cabana, which provides space for eating lunch with us on work days. We have an outdoor shower with solar powered heating, therefore we usually have enough hot water for three people to take a hot shower. Volunteers can charge their devices at the host home, and we also have a collection of films/series for those who bring their laptops. We wash volunteer clothing on Monday and Tuesday using our machine, which can then be hung to dry at the washing line by the cabana at the end of the work day. The maximum the cabana can comfortably accommodate is two people, but we do welcome groups of three that are travelling together.

It is a 15-minute walk to the bus stop and a 40 minute walk to the city for internet access. Bus fare is under a euro (runs Monday to Friday). There is also a 20-minute walk from our house to the coastline, where there exists a rock beach. Our homestead is the only house dedicated to full-time living across from the main village of Fazenda. It is located on a Bio Reserve that surrounds it for many hectares. We are very secluded in natural beauty of mountains, rivers, pastureland, and waterfalls.

Cell phone reception is based on your cell phone service provider, for us cell phone use depends on the weather. Some of our woofers get good reception on their cell phone or smart-phones. There is no internet service or land-line phone reception at our house, or power lines.
