We stayed with Stephen for 1 1/2 weeks and it was one of the best times we have had here in New Zealand. Steve is a wonderful host who helped us with every problem we had and was there for us. … read more lot about New Zealand and was always able to give us tips on where we should go next. His dog Bexter is quite old but very sweet and likes to sit on your lap when you go on trips with Steve.
He's a great cook and even though one of us is a vegetarian and this is Steve's first time, everyone likes it.
Steve lives very centrally in the city, so you can easily walk to the mall or go for a walk in the evening. In general, there is a lot to see nearby, especially if you are interested in nature and outdoor activities.
Steve was more than just a host for us. We knew we could always turn to him if we had a problem and he didn't hesitate for a second to help us. (He would have driven three hours there and three hours back to pick us up from the Abel Tasman National Park).

Sandy is a model Workawayer she did what was asked and more with a happy smile.
Sandy is very good company and a very good cook. Sandy would be most welcome if she came back to New Zealand to stay at my home.

I spent two weeks at Steve's place and had a wonderful time. He is the most generous person ever and did everything to show me around the area and even took me on a special boat tour around the Abel Tasman National park which was amazing!
He is very appreciative of all you do, especially the cooking:)
I got to know some of his relatives as well

..and then there is Baxter; the cutest dog ever, he loves going for walks and meeting other doggies! there is some beautiful walks close to the house where you can walk for hours.

We spent just a few days with Stephen and his dog Baxter, but we had a really good time there.
Stephen showed us around Richmond and the Golden Bay and told us a lot about the area and what are good spots to visit. We had many nice talks in the evenings and he told us about the life in New Zealand.
It was awesome to see how Stephen is in love

Jackie was a great help with all that asked of her. She went beyond what was asked of her
Her friendship etc was over whelming, her cooking is of very high quality and Jackie cooks very good sweet foods as in Cakes etc.
I would have Jackie back in my house anytime soon.

Stephen was a kind, gracious, and, respectful host. He has a wealth of knowledge to share about Nelson and the top of the South Island.
He has grown up here and resided here for much of his life. It is clear that he loves this area. And it clear that he enjoys sharing "his corner of the world" with travelers from around the world.

Comparatively, to other "Workaways", the tasks here were lite . Basically lite housekeeping, daily watering of foliage and fruit trees, laundry and hanging clothes out, dinner and clean-up afterwards.
*Dinner was a simple, healthy fare. My favorite meals were the fresh fish after being out all day on the bay. Stephen seemed to enjoy most, new recipes I tried from my home. A definite plus everyday, was playtime with Baxter, the three year-old, Jack Russell Terrier, shares this home. He is so cute! He will steal your heart. There are great dog paths close where you can take him walking.
I enjoyed my room because it had big windows, and I could see the sunset, twilight, and beautiful sky of stars. The bed is very comfortable.
Richmond town Centre is just a 5 block walk down the hill. There is a mall and array of stores, resale boutiques, bakeries, restaurants and pubs along Queen Street.
I enjoyed several barbecues with extended family. I found Stephen's relatives to be friendly with a terrific sense of humor.
I also enjoyed several boating opportunities on Tasman Bay with Stephen and his family. The coast of New Zealand north of Nelson is rugged and breathtaking. I really appreciated how Stephen " went the extra mile", to ensure I made good memories while visiting Nelson/Richmond and top of the South Island of New Zealand.
Stephen was kind enough to take me on a couple day outings: one to Abel Tasman Park and another to Nelson Lakes Park, Lake Roitoiti area. Nature shines in this area, with stunning mountains and clear, pristine lakes and rivers. It is nothing less than breathtaking too. I use that phrase repeatedly when referring to beauty of New Zealand, although I spent all my time fairly close to Nelson.
The closest beach on the bay, is a 20 minute bus ride.
Richmond is about 12 miles from Nelson but there is good pubic transportation. The "Naked Bus" is available for longer overnight trips for a good price. I believe Stephen would be very gracious in negotiating a long weekend.
I truly enjoyed my time with Stephen and his family seeing this communtiy and this beautiful place from the perspective of locals. I loved sitting on the patio on a warm summer evening discussing anything and everything. We spent time with our star apps finding the southern cross and other sky highlights.
This was a wonderful place to enjoy peaceful, serenity from early morning coffee on the deck to laughter and twilight conversation. I like to write and am working on a novel. I have had enough time in a peaceful, comfortable, setting to write to my heart's desire.
