We are looking for a helper for this spring and summer with lambing out our 50 ewes and caring for their lambs, hauling hay and grain and planting the garden. We are a working sheep farm, grazing our sheep on the hills of our 1/4 section in Central Alberta, Canada. Helpers can learn about lambs and ewes, our guardian dogs and how to feed them. We raise our own chickens and pigs. We also grow our own hay and grain, so volunteers can learn about driving tractors, hauling hay, cutting wood, painting, and working with antique tractors and machinery . We also have to plant our garden for growing our own veggies. We enjoy traveling and having people from different countries visit our farm. We have a cabin for travelers to stay in which is close to the house, or you can stay in in one of our 2 bedrooms in our house. You can enjoy home grown, home cooked meals. Our farm is 3 hours from the Rocky Mountains and 2 hours from Calgary and Edmonton. We enjoy taking visitors to local events such as rodeos, museums, malls, hockey games and any other events they would like to see. Please remember that it can be very cold in Alberta in the spring months (March and April) and working outside can be challenging in the winter months. We do have coats and boots and gloves available.

We have over 40 years experience in agriculture and enjoy teaching others about sustainable agriculture, rotational grazing, breeds of sheep and their care, farm machinery and equipment use and maintenance and about farm life in Western Canada. We also enjoy taking visitors to local and cultural events in the area. Bill is learning Spanish and is always interested in learning about other languages and exchanging stories on different countries and their cultures.
During the year, help us with the care of the ewes and lambs. In the summer volunteers can watch over the sheep in the pastures. Also feed the working dogs, pigs, chicks, chickens and gathering eggs. In the fall and winter helpers can be involved in tractor and machinery maintenance and painting. You can also learn how to drive tractors, haul hay, cut firewood and feed and care for the sheep and lambs. Depending on the weather, we put in about 5 hours a day. I always appreciate some help with house chores on rainy days. There is always time set aside for trips to the local town, museum or rodeo.
We always have a few lambs that need extra care and cats and dogs that need hugs. We raise chickens and will need help with their care and gathering eggs.
We prefer NON VEGETARIANS as I do not know how to cook vegetarian meals, and nearly all our meals are prepared with our home raised chicken, lamb, turkey, pork or local beef. Shopping and preparing 2 different meals at each sitting is too time consuming. If you are a vegetarian, please find a host that specializes in preparing vegetarian meals.
We have a lovely furnished cabin which is located close to the house which has 2 beds which is well suited for spring to fall use. In our house we have 2 additional bedrooms for volunteers in the winter. All bedding is supplied.
We can supply volunteers with farm clothing, boots, gloves, and hats. We can pick visitors up from the Edmonton airport or from the Red Deer bus station. Our farm is situated 3 hours from the Rocky Mountains (Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise) 2 hours from West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton and from Calgary. In the summer there are rodeos, and local cultural events and in the winter there are hockey games and a ski hill in Red Deer when activities open up after covid 19.
