We began the conservation and restoration of our 300 year old home 7 years ago. The house was an active Hammersmith until 1907 this meant the smith used the power of the river to hammer metal into tools and implements.
The main building work and decorating is compete. Although there are still areas of necessary maintenance, much of it outdoors such as fencing, logging and daily care of animals. We love animals and have an amazing Spanish greyhound dog, a cat, ducks, rabbits, chickens and goats.
The Hammerschmiede passed though a number of hands over the last 110 years and was sadly increasingly negleged. So we have been giving it much needed TLC. Over the last years we have had amazing helpers though workaway who have enabled us to realise our home and breath some life back into a very tired house. It is incredible how many helpful, kind and caring people are out there and have found their way to our home. We would not have been able to do what we have done without all their help.
Our home is situated at the end of a dirt track road in a valley by the river in a forest clearing. It is located in foot hills of the Alps. Austria 10 mins, Switzerland 40 mins and Italy 3 hours away. The only sounds are from the river and the animals. It is a very quite and peaceful place. The nearest ski resort is 15 mins up the road :-)
Balthasar is 14 bubbly and a lot of fun to be with. He goes to the Montesorri school.
We are British and we only speak English at home.
Strictly NO Smokers please.
We have turned a small part of the house into a B&B with 3 guest rooms. The main and bigger part of the house is our private home. B&B Guests have no access to our garden or our home, it is very important to us to keep this separate. We are aware that workaway volunteers should not be used in revenue earning parts. We do all the work involved with guests and guest area ourselves. Workawayers help in our own privat garden, house and with our own private animals.
We look forward to hearing from you

What a little paradise we found in the south of Germany in Die Hammerschmiede.
Thank you Thesy, Thorn and Balti for the warm welcome, the high quality lovely (ayurvedic) food. And of course the gathering together with so many stories.

I've spent just about 3 weeks here in February 2018 and it felt much longer, but totally in a good way. The friendliness and warmth offered by Tom and Thesy, but especially by the kids (in particular Xeny and Balthy) was astounding.

Jo and Dom were amazing. We loved having them to stay and were all sad to see them leave. The amount they helped us during their stay is incredible. The place totally transformed in the two weeks. Jo was not stoppable, keen and happy. I will never forget her lugging enormous rocks around and building 3 fantastic stone… read more
