We are a family of four living in our dream rainforest property on the Atherton Tableland in Far North Queensland. We purchased this property because of the diverse and unique wildlife that only live in the Wet Tropics. We are both very active in the conservation space in our spare time. We both work from home, with two young boys at our feet. We also have three dogs, 6 chickens, and the occasional wildlife in care when there is time.

We will show you all the natural areas we love in our local area on weekends, and show you all the wildlife that we have got to know on the property. We will provide local tips and connect you in with some of our friends who are in the wildlife and tourism space nearby if you're interested in more volunteer, or sightseeing opportunities. We also have kayaks that can be used at the nearby lakes which is a fun thing to do in your downtime. We are very close to Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham.

Minimum 4 Weeks). 20 hours per week in exchange for accommodation.

We are seeking passionate green thumbs (with knowledge of tropical gardens would be very useful) for a 4 week stay on our stunning 40-acre rainforest property at Lake Barrine in the Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland.

This is our private family property, not a business. In exchange for your help, we offer a fully self-contained apartment beneath our home with your own bathroom, kitchenette, laundry facilities, private entrance, Wi-Fi, and beautiful rainforest surrounds.

We are located approximately 1.5 hours inland from Cairns and are centrally located to many of the Atherton Tablelands' most popular attractions, including crater lakes, waterfalls, rainforest walks, markets, and wildlife experiences. Lake Barrine and Lake Eacham are just 5 minutes drive from our property.

Our home is surrounded by established tropical gardens that have become a little too successful! Living in the Wet Tropics means things grow quickly, and we are looking for someone who can help our family to bring the gardens back under control and create better separation between the rainforest and the house to improve airflow and reduce moisture and mould.

Tasks may include pruning and cutting back tropical gardens, hedge trimming, weeding and clearing invasive vines, mulching, and general help around the property such as taking cuttings to the burn pile.

We would love your help establishing a productive vegetable garden if that is of interest to you too. We will work alongside you on weekends, and we have a gardener who comes once every now and then that will be helping and can teach you a thing or two about the plants here.

Experience with tropical food production, composting, permaculture, food forests, or sustainable gardening practices would be highly regarded so that we can learn from you too. We provide all tools and equipment required. Helpers will only be asked to operate equipment they are comfortable and competent using.

The property comprises 40 acres of rare Mabi rainforest and is home to abundant wildlife including tree kangaroos, platypus, possums, countless bird species, and occasional cassowary sightings.

A small portion of the property is cleared and contains a fruit orchard (please help yourself to the fruit) and vegetable garden, while the majority of the property remains untouched protected rainforest backing onto Gadgarra National Park.

We have our own private waterfall, where platypus are seen almost daily, along with a creek running through the property. You will enjoy views of the waterfall from your accommodation and have private access via a walking track leading down to it. It’s beautiful to swim there in the warmer months.

We are a friendly family who work from home and have two young children, two dogs, and six chickens. We live in the home above the apartment, so occasional household noise and footsteps may be heard from the unit below. We travel into town most weekdays for school and kindergarten drop-offs, and you are welcome to catch a lift as there is no public transport servicing the property. We enjoy showing visitors around the Atherton Tablelands and are happy to share some of our favourite local attractions and experiences on weekends.

We are usually home on weekends working on various projects around the property and enjoy sharing the occasional BBQ or family meal. Daily meals and groceries are not provided, however the apartment has full kitchen facilities and occasional weekend meals are included. Due to our rural location, having your own vehicle is beneficial but not essential.

We can arrange pickup from Atherton, Yungaburra, or Mareeba by prior arrangement, and public transport services operate between Cairns and these locations.

This opportunity would suit someone with practical gardening, horticulture, or permaculture experience, particularly knowledge of tropical plants and gardens, who enjoys physical outdoor help appreciates wildlife and rural living, is comfortable around snakes, spiders, and other rainforest creatures, and has an interest in sustainable food production. If spending several weeks living in a rainforest paradise while working alongside us to transform a tropical garden sounds like your kind of adventure, we'd love to hear from you.
