A lot of nature and a big dream - join our permaculture adventure in Galicia!
Hi folks!
We are Johanna and Benjamin and our three girls Ava (12), Hannah Maeve (10) and Greta (8). After living in Portugal for over 12 years, we moved to beautiful green Galicia, where we found our dream property in summer 2023. An old Galician homestead with lots of land, beautiful old buildings and more projects than we will probably ever finish!
We are slowly transforming this place into a permaculture homestead, growing our own food, regenerating the soil and trying to live as sustainably as possible. We are still far from where we want to be, but hey, every project has to start somewhere, right?
At the moment we're taking a little winter break, but we'll be back from March 2027!
SPRING/SUMMER 2027 - WE ARE LOOKING FOR TWO VOLUNTEERS!
This coming spring we'll be particularly busy renovating our own old farmhouse, which means there won't be much time left for my beloved garden. So we're looking for two motivated, independent people who would like to spend some time with us and become part of our little homestead adventure.
1. THE GARDEN GURU
Do you love getting your hands in the soil? Are you excited about seedlings, compost, growing vegetables and healthy soil? Do you occasionally talk to your plants? Then we might get along very well!
We are looking for someone who already has experience in organic gardening or permaculture and would enjoy taking the lead in our growing season.
There is plenty to do: planning, sowing, planting, weeding, mulching, composting, irrigation, looking after our young food forest and, hopefully, harvesting lots of delicious vegetables!
Ideally you'd stay for the whole growing season, but we ask for a minimum of 3 months. You should be happy working independently and taking initiative, as we won't always be around in the garden. Of course we'll be there to help, exchange ideas and get our hands dirty too!
2. THE ALL-ROUND HELPER
For our second volunteer we're looking for someone who enjoys a bit of everything.
There is always something to do around here, from gardening and looking after our chickens, ducks and sheep to woodworking, small DIY projects, clay work, maintaining the land, cooking and preserving food.
Some practical experience would be great, but more importantly, we appreciate people who are motivated, curious and happy to get stuck in.
And a good sense of humour definitely helps, especially when the sheep have escaped. Again.
Minimum stay: 3 weeks.
LIFE AT OUR HOMESTEAD
We are a German-speaking family of five who love surfing, being outdoors, good food and good company. Apart from us, there is a dog, five cats, Indian Runner ducks, three little Ouessant sheep and about a dozen chickens running around.
We cook most of our meals at home and try to eat as much as possible from our garden. We enjoy eating together, sharing stories and getting to know people from different backgrounds.
We offer a bed in our wooden dormitory, bathrooms, a shared kitchen, electricity and fresh drinking water from our own borehole. If you're travelling with a campervan or tent, you're welcome to stay on our land too. We also have a composting toilet and a lovely Bali-style outdoor shower with hot water.
We usually spend around 4.5 hours a day, 5 mornings a week, on our shared activities. The afternoons and weekends are yours to enjoy.
AND WHEN YOU'RE NOT WORKING?
Well, Galicia is pretty amazing!
We are only 5-10 minutes by car from some beautiful beaches, great surf spots and lovely coastal walks. There are forests, waterfalls, natural pools, hiking and biking trails and lots of little villages to explore. Santiago de Compostela is also not too far away.
There are restaurants within walking distance, but having a car is definitely a plus if you want to explore the area properly.
A LITTLE MORE ABOUT US
We are quite easy-going, love having people around and enjoy a good conversation over dinner. At the same time, life here can be busy and there is always something that needs to be done .
We appreciate people who are independent, reliable, open-minded and genuinely interested in what we're doing. People who notice when something needs attention without always having to be asked.
Our place is definitely not a perfectly finished Instagram homestead. There are muddy boots, unfinished buildings, weeds growing where they shouldn't and a to-do list that never seems to get any shorter. But it's a beautiful place and we love it.

Alojamiento
Dormitory, A-Frame Cabin or tents or camper vans...we have electricity, showers (eco-products only), compost toilet and fresh groundwater. Breakfast & dinner is your own responsibility, but we provide the basics so you only have to spend money on treats like alcohol, sweets, snacks etc...and you can pick from the garden . Lunches are cooked and eaten together... It would be amazing if you have a car to be more flexible in your free time.
