Thank you for reading the ENTIRE profile. It is important to have the best experience for both parties. I decline to potential volunteers who do not to read it.

    IMPORTANT SUMMARY:
-The calendar is up to date. Please do not submit a request for months that appear unavailable. Write your request with the potential dates you can commit to come.
-This opportunity last for 2 weeks minimum and 3 maximum. I expect 2 hours per day of volunteering. You are free on Saturdays and Sundays.
-Only ONE person, WOMAN and older than 25 are accommodated.
-I can't host any person who is allergic to cats' fur.
-I only offer breakfast as a meal but to compensate for this I offer a language exchange in which I can teach you Spanish (I'm native), or English (I'm not native but I have a C2 level). If you are not interested in a language exchange, you can still come.

If you comply with the "IMPORTANT SUMMARY", please, continue reading. If not, please, do not contact me.

    ABOUT ME
Hello girls! My name is Ana, I am 44 years old and I am an English teacher at Primary school.
In this profile I'm offering two kinds of workaway opportunities. You can teach me French or you can come and help in the local Cat Shelter.

For French: I am a French student, and at the moment I am in between B1-B2 level, so I can actually communicate in French about simple topics.
I am looking for a female French speaking person who can teach me more, as I am planning a trip in France next spring and I would like to improve my skills. My other goal is also to sit the B2 DELF examination in the future, so any volunteers who apply need to arrive here at least with the essential information about that especific test.

For Cat Shelter: I run the local Cat Shelter in my city. From time to time we have Workaway volunteers who come and help. We rescue stray cats, neuter and release them. We also rescue baby cats, ill cats, or abandoned cats and put them into our adoption programs. We fight to find spaces where stray cats can live safely and we look after them.

It is handmade shelter in town built with the effort of all volunteers. If you want to join us, these are the details:
-MISSION 1 (and most important): Socializing feral cats and checking up on them. This includes spending time with the cats, playing and gaining their trust so they become friendlier and acceptable for adoptions. Also, check up on all the cats' health every day. There are many cats and only a few volunteers. Sometimes a cat is sick but we don't realize it fast enough to be in time to save its life.

-MISSION 2: Cleaning the areas where cats live (sandboxes, beds, feeders, etc.). There are around 30 cats at the shelter. The regular volunteers there will tell you how you can help with this. You should know that my house is sometimes a mini shelter where I keep baby cats or very young ones.

    THE FAMILY:
I live with Emilio and three cats. Emilio is my husband but he is introverted, so it's hard to connect with him. If you speak Spanish, he will be very happy though.
The day of your arrival I will tell you about my home and show you everything, but you should know that I can provide you with a towel, fresh linen, blankets, etc. You can also use my kitchen.

If you are willing to, I can show you around or even plan a day out in Barcelona (or somewhere else) and I can show you places.

If you want to come for any volunteering opportunity we offer, please send a request explaining your motivations, your plans while in there and the skills you offer.

We are a Catalan couple, born in Barcelona, although our families were emigrants originally from other parts of Spain. We have grown up in cultural environments marked by this culture shock and we can explain to you many traditions that we have learned here, or that we learned from the places where our families are from. We know Catalan and Spanish history and a good part of the customs. We are good at recommending places to visit that might be of interest to you. If you are a big fan of history, we can give you a historical tour in Barcelona.

TRANSPORTATION How to get from the airport to our house? At Terminal 2, look for the train station (follow the orange sign with a capital R). Take the only train there is and you will arrive at my house in 45 minutes. Stop in La Llagosta. The best way to travel to Barcelona from the house is by train. Plus, right now it's free to travel by train. Trains run from 5:00 AM to 00:00. If you want to come back later, there are buses, although they are not free.

    THE VOLUNTEERING COMMITMENT
For French: I am looking for a person who:
-is knowledgeable about teaching. I am not looking for someone to have casual conversation or chit chat only, but a person who can actually TEACH. Experience as a real teacher would be valuable.
-is available to teach in the afternoons or evenings only, after 17:30.
-can prepare her own teaching sessions

I have my own French books but you are free to bring / prepare your own materials which you think would be suitable for me.
I am absolutely open to possibilities. If you have your lessons planned for my level, I would engage with them. If you prefer to follow a course book of my level, I'm also up for that. If you need that I print something for the lessons, I can do it.

I expect that volunteers work 2 hours per day. That includes 1.5 hours for my class, and 30 minutes to prepare the sessions. Of course I won't be watching if you are using your 30 minutes to prepare the sessions, this is to be done on your own and I won't control it.

    For Cat Shelter:
HOURS are from 10:30 a.m. to 13:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday. Days off are Saturday and Sunday. Most of the times you won't have to stay until 13:00 and you can leave when the other volunteers leave. You won't be in the shelter on your own.

Candidates who have good skills with animals or who have had previous experiences with cats will be more positively valued as in this volunteering you should be able to connect with cats and spend the mornings with them.

Although you will live with me (Ana), the volunteering will take place at the animal shelter and you may be with different people each time you go. All the volunteers at the shelter will take care of you and treat you very well.

    THE HOST'S COMMITMENT
    I can offer:
-BREAKFAST: Breakfast and coffee is on me.
-LANGUAGE EXCHANGE: I can teach Spanish or English. I don't know if it's worth mentioning this, but I can also teach Catalan and it's my second mother tongue.
-PRIVACY: You will be offered a private room with a big bed and desk.
-LOTS OF FREE TIME: When you are not volunteering, you will have the whole day to enjoy yourself. Note that we ask volunteers to contribute to some of the house chores. We think it's fair as we all live in the apartment.

By the way, if you managed to read until this point, mention your favourite pizza in your request.

  • Acomodação

    Acomodação

We live in a small flat (apartment) in La Llagosta, a town right next to Barcelona. The city can be easily reached by train in 20 minutes. Our town is safe and the people are friendly, especially if you present yourself as a traveler, they will want to know everything about you. Don't think we live in an unsafe suburb.

Staying in our house is convenient if what you hope is to get to know Barcelona but living in a quieter place with local people. If you need to work online, you will have a lot of free time and the house is quiet.

It is not possible to open windows in our home because it's dangerous for our cats.
