    Description

    Hello Pet lovers!
    I am Natasa from Greece.
We rented a big house in a quiet village named Souroti, which is located 40 min outside from the City Center of Thessaloniki.
Our project is to rescue stray dogs from Greece, to care for them and to find them a lovely home in the future.

You will get a chance to learn about animal welfare in Greece. You can learn how to take care of dogs, of disabled dogs as well, and how to run a different shelter. We do not believe in cages and all the dogs can be free living in the house and in the yard and others who sleep in kennels they are opened to run free and play for at least 3 hours per day .That way could will for sure learn a lot about the behavior of dogs in a pack and as an individual.
We can tell you many things about Greece and Greeks and also want to learn about your culture and country. You get to meet and exchange with people from all over the world.

Thessaloniki City Center is easily reachable either by Bus or in the morning with my husband when he goes to work. Thessaloniki is an open minded city with many places to see and hike to and amazing beaches nearby. Plus you will have amazing food to try! :)

**NEWS: 7/2022 - We are looking for a long term volunteer or for a minimum stay of 3 weeks Required experience with animals and lots of love for dogs**

Running a different shelter like ours is one is not always easy.
There are many rules to be followed!
You will have to co-exist with many dogs and keep them safe, clean and healthy. Because of that it is very important that you are a responsible person who is willing to follow the rules of the shelter strictly as they have been put in place for the safety of the dogs and the volunteers.
Helping in a sanctuary is not only cuddling and loving the dogs - it is also providing them a safe and clean space to life.
That means cleaning the yards and the house twice per day - if you are not willing to get dirty and involved physically and emotionally, please, do not send us a message!
You will also feed them and, if needed, give them medicine. Some of the dogs are sick, some even disabled.

We would really appreciate people who have new and smart ideas to improve the house and the living areas of the dogs as there is still a lot to renovate and upgrade. Maybe you know a lot about social media campaigning, photography, organizing and logistics or graphic design.

Currently we have about 80 dogs but that number always changes since dogs get adopted and new dogs get rescued.
Please keep in mind that the schedule can be time consuming and unpredictable. Yes, you have days off but on the days that you are working the schedule can change. The daily work depends on the needs of the dogs. Also remember they get fed twice as day same as the changing of their waters, especially in the summer time.
The main requirement of course is giving them lots of love and cuddles! :)

It is possible to take some of the dogs for walks of even to the beach (a car would be required for that though).

We welcome people who are willing to work for our dogs with passion and creativity. We want to have a good time together, work together and create the best life possible for the dogsledding their well-being is our number one priority!

If you are open-minded and don’t mind a demanding and stressful job while living with a lot of dogs we are happy to welcome you and are looking forward to you message! :)

    check us out!

**Since you will be working with dogs and accidents can happen you are required to sign a waiver**

In total there are four bedrooms, some with normal beds and few with folding beds.
It can be possible that you have to share the bedroom with another volunteer but only if you are comfortable with that of course and we need to agree upon that before arrival .
There are three bedrooms upstairs without dogs and one bathroom all the volunteers share with each other.
The last bedroom is downstairs and the closest to the dogs as there are also three dogs living in the bedroom. Downstairs is a bathrooms as well.
Please keep in mind that there are dogs not only sleeping inside but also in the garden and outside so it is possible that there is noise in the night.
All of the volunteers share one kitchen.
We go to the supermarket to buy food for the volunteers once a week.

My husband and I are not living in the same house as the dogs and volunteers but we are living very close by - 15 minutes walking distance from the shelter.
The work is divided between me and the volunteers. You get two days off per week but we have to communicate which days you prefer.

The center of the village Souroti is just 15 min walking distance from the Sanctuary.
There you can find several supermarkets, cafes, a butcher and a bakery.
The public transport in Greece is not always punctual and it’s not the best infrastructure but it is still possible!
You can take the bus to go to different places around here. You can also rent a car in Thessaloniki to see different places.
My husband and I work in the city center of Thessaloniki and can provide you a ride in and out of the city sometimes otherwise you can use public transportation
We just have to communicate with each other for that.

We can pick you up from the airport but the arrival must be after 7 am and not after 10pm

People can bring their pets only if they are compatible with other dogs. Please remember that we are a sanctuary with between 60 and 100 dogs. Since there is always something to do it won’t be possible for you to constantly watch your pet. Also some of our dogs are always outside so it is not guaranteed that your dog can just roam around freely.
