LOOKING FOR A GARDENER m/f OR PERSON WITH A GREEN THUMB!

We’re currently looking for a gardener (M/F), or someone with a green thumb who loves working with trees, plants, and nature, and of course, dogs!

The work mainly involves pruning trees and shrubs, clearing fallen leaves and seeds, removing weeds and unwanted cactus shoots, shredding and composting garden waste, watering the plants, helping with planting and landscaping, removing dog poop, and pretty much anything related to keeping our garden in great shape.
It would be a bonus if this person could also help out with small repairs to fences and kennels and use electric hand tools, but that’s definitely not a requirement.

Ideally, we're looking for a volunteer who can commit for a longer period, 2 to 3 months or even more if possible.

If you’re responding to this post, please mention "gardener" specifically so we know what you're applying for.

🌴 WELCOME to a DOG RESORT, a TROPICAL PARADISE for DOGS ( and DOG LOVERS)!

Hi! My name is Joop, and in 2014, I began building a lifelong dream, a luxury dog resort where dogs can enjoy a safe, happy, and playful stay while their owners are off-island.
The Dog resort officially opened in December 2015, and since then, we’ve been growing steadily, welcoming more and more amazing dogs into our little tropical paradise.

Our resort spans a fenced-in, 30,000 square feet of beautiful tropical island landscape. Most of the space is taken up by the huge garden and the swimming pond, designed for the dogs to play, dig, wrestle, run and just be dogs.
The garden is mainly filled with tropical plants, trees, and shrubs. There are also a few very large, tall cacti scattered around.

It is designed with space, safety, and fun in mind. We can accommodate 15 to 20 guest dogs at a time. The property includes three spacious, fully fenced sleeping kennel houses for vacation stays. Each has its own double-sided dog nighthouse, complete with floor boards and soft couches so every dog has a comfy place to sleep and relax at night. In addition we have our own 6 rascals who live and sleep inside the house, with us.

During the day, the dogs are free to roam the full 30,000 sq. ft. They can explore our beach area with real beach sand, take a dip in the swimming pond filled with fish and plants, or climb and jump Aruba’s famous big rocks, yes, those are for dogs and humans alike! There’s plenty of open space for zoomies and chasing games (dog-only zone!), shady trees to nap under (great for dogs and people), and fun spots for hide and seek (dogs only, humans tend to get lost!).

We also have a soft spot for foster dogs and puppies. We care for strays from our local rescue organizations when needed, help them recover, and give them the love and structure they need to have a brighter future!

The people of Aruba are incredibly kind and welcoming. They’re open-minded and enjoy sharing their culture with others. With a strong focus on tourism, they’re also genuinely curious about different cultures. Today, this island of 105,000 residents is home to more than 90 nationalities, all living and working together in harmony.

Working with and caring for dogs of all types, large and small, young and old, trained or untrained, and even those with little to no previous human contact, gives you a valuable opportunity to learn and understand canine communication. We’ll explain and guide you in recognizing how dogs express themselves, both with each other and with people.

FIRST and FOREMOST we want you to understand the principle of WorkAway:
WE PROVIDE YOU WITH COMFORTABLE ACCOMODATION AND GOOD FOOD, AND IN RETURN, YOU HELP US OUT!

Of course, during your free time, you're encouraged to enjoy yourself — whether that means exploring the island or relaxing on our beautiful beaches or under the trees with a good book.

That said, we've had our fair share of experiences with people who came with hidden agendas, like those just looking for a cheap vacation, lacking genuine interest in dogs or the Resort, or carrying personal, emotional or health issues that we are simply not equipped to manage.
We specialize in helping dogs with problems, not people (though we're always happy to lend an ear).

That’s why we’re looking for enthusiastic, reliable, and motivated individuals who are truly committed to being part of the DOG RESORT team!
People who take pride in their assignments and complete them to the best of their ability.
A strong work ethic and a good sense of teamwork are most important to us!
We don’t have a preference for male or female volunteers; what matters is that the work is done with care and dedication.

There’s a wide range of tasks to help with, both big and small.
We have four fruit gardens between the dog accommodations that need care. The dog suites need daily cleaning, the dogs need to be fed and played with, feeding bowls washed and the plants and trees need watering. Daily removing the dog poo from the garden is an important part of keeping the dog- and human health under control.

Other tasks include planting shrubs and trees, landscaping, painting the white picket fences, the outside fences must be checked and repaired, drinking ponds maintained. Then there are bigger jobs in the planning as setting up a filtration system for the swimming pond, installing irrigation pipes, installing solar panels and a power bank, painting shipping containers, building a patio, creating a compost area, and, during the rainy season, pulling a lot of weeds.
The list goes on and is growing while it really needs to get shorter!

And if you have skills or knowledge to share in these areas, we’re always happy to learn from you too!

We are open and welcoming people, and we want to keep it that way.
You'll become a part of our family, and we want you to feel at home , right from the moment you arrive.

We also ask to take part in daily life, help with cooking if requested, and always help clean up and do the dishes without being asked. We expect everyone to contribute to keeping the household tidy and clean.

We live in a converted 40-foot shipping container ourselves, so we don’t have a spare room inside our home. However, we can offer you a place to stay in our guesthouse container. We kindly ask that you keep the space neat and clean, and leave it in good and clean condition when you leave for your next destination.

Free, high-speed Internet is available around both the main house and the guesthouse. You're also welcome to use our washing machine, just let us know when you’d like to do your laundry.

    A Few More Things...
You’ll be expected to volunteer up to 25 hours per week. After that, the rest of your time is yours to enjoy everything Aruba has to offer, sun, sea, beaches, and most importantly, the warm, welcoming, and easygoing people of our island.

If you don’t speak Dutch (our official language) or Papiamento (our local language), no worries! Most people here also speak English and Spanish, so you'll get by just fine.

There’s no way to list all the activities available here, you name it, it’s probably on Aruba. Because of the island’s steady trade winds, water sports are especially popular. Whether you’re into swimming, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, surfing, or kite surfing, you’ll find it here. Just Google “Aruba” to get a taste of what’s waiting for you. We’re a top vacation destination, with around 1.5 million tourists from the U.S., Europe, and South America visiting each year.
As you'd expect, rental prices reflect this, so come prepared. Bring plenty of (reef-safe) sunscreen, your sunglasses, and a baseball cap!

    Getting Around...
We have a bicycle available for our volunteers to use, free of charge. We only ask you to repair flats directly and not let that for your host when you leave. Aruba is a small island, so most places are within biking distance, and the traffic is light and manageable. If we’re heading somewhere, we’re happy to give you a ride. And when possible, we can drop you off at places you’d like to visit.

    And One More Important Thing…
    WE RUN A DOG RESORT!
So it really helps if you’re comfortable around dogs, and even better if you love them. Like on a farm, the dogs need care every day, including weekends and holidays. If working with dogs doesn’t appeal to you, this probably isn’t the right place for you.

But if you’re open to learning, we’ll show you the ropes, even if it means doing some unusual things to “speak” the dogs’ language (yes, we've learned a few tricks from them ourselves!). You don’t need to be a professional dog handler, we’ll train you. Just come with a positive attitude and a willingness to engage.

Back in the Netherlands, we did the same kind of work and were certified by AEQUOR to train young veterinary students through hands-on experience with dogs
