After reading a recent negative review of this Workaway, I feel it’s important to share my own experience as well. I stayed with Marie back in January and this review is overdue. I’ve hesitated to write this review, but I feel a responsibility to inform future Workawayers.
Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this workaway.
From the beginning,
… read more problems developed between Marie and me. I believe this may have come from cultural differences or possibly my identity (LBGT)
Rather than offering constructive feedback, she would often criticize or yell at me in a harsh and personal way. I don’t recall her saying anything positive during my stay. When I made small mistakes she reacted with disproportionate anger. For example, while I was removing drywall from around a metal post in her living room, a small piece accidentally dented the floor. I immediately apologized. Then she screamed at me, “You’re not sorry! You’re never sorry.” This was very upsetting. There were several occasions where I was insulted, called “awful” and “insufferable,” or cursed at in French.
Instructions were unclear. When I tried to observe her, to better understand what she wanted, she would mock me, saying aggressively, “Yeah, look at me.” She didn’t take time to explain things, and when I asked questions or hesitated due to confusion, she responded with impatience or hostility.
There was a serious incident where she asked me to get sand but gave no direction on what to do with it. As I picked up the bucket and was about to ask for clarification, she ran towards me, shoved me, and shouted, “You are AWFUL.”
She often compared me to previous Workawayers, saying things like, “I have never had a Workawayer so awful.”
Although I speak some French and she speaks some English, she was not willing to acknowledge that language barriers might lead to misunderstandings. She once told me she didn’t understand why I struggled to understand her, since I was from an English-speaking country, and that previous Workawayers from non English-speaking countries understood her better.
She expected work to be done with professional-level skill and efficiency, despite hosting young volunteers through Workaway.
Positively, she was fair with working hours, and weekends were free, so I had time to explore Paris. But despite those positives, the overall atmosphere was very tense and emotionally draining. I’ve completed other Workaways and always received positive feedback, having worked hard and taken responsibilities seriously. But this situation became insufferable.
In my view, this is not a healthy or respectful environment. I hope this review helps others make an informed decision
