I stayed with Lionel for about 5 weeks. He is a very kind, helpful, and hospitable host. He always made sure I was comfortable and welcome. … read more loved the local pastis and wine. Lionel also has some tourists staying in the flats sometimes, who were very nice. It was great to meet them and have an aperitif a few times. The work was mainly around the house and in the garden. It was very relaxed and not at all difficult. I learned a lot, especially interpersonal skills. You can have a great conversation with him. He has the best advice about anything. During the weekend, we saw many of the surrounding towns, and we visited Vienna as well. Overall a pleasant experience.

Victor has been a very pleasant and efficient guy during his short stay. He has been very adaptable and friendly and very humoristic, finding new objectives to achieve and giving me notions of Belgium. Despite the heat wave, Victor was always positive for the tasks to do. He is really a person to recommand.

I was lucky enough to work with Lionel for 10 days. We talked a lot so it was great to improve our languages and he had good sense of humour. He is very flexible and adapts to the needs of the workawayer. Lionel is a real Frenchman so this workaway is great if you want to immerse in French culture and have good conversations. I stayed with Lionel in January for a couple of weeks and so I’m a little late with leaving a review but here we are. Lionel was a brilliant host and his house was a great place to stay. Sanary is well-connected and picturesque, with nice buildings and a charming French market.

… read more had everything I needed and was very fair with the amount of work he gave me.
The food was excellent. Lionel is a good cook and enjoys a big variety of food, much of which he buys from local markets and makes delicious meals out of. He also introduced me to some new food and drink that I’d never had; cod liver, oysters, and the famous Pastis (which for better or worse is now a cornerstone of my drinking diet).
Of course the region is full of natural beauty amazing locations to visit. We visited some historic villages, with La Cadiere-d’Azur being especially memorable. We also went to Toulon for a day and took a boat to a nearby island, where we sprinted to buy some beers at a shop before it closed and then went for a scenic walk along the coast. It was great to be introduced to a region I’d never been to before and Lionel was an excellent guide for that.
Whilst back at the house, most of the downtime I spent in conversation with Lionel. He has an interest in many different subjects and we talked a fair bit about history and international affairs, as well as the comparative states of French and British politics. There was more light-hearted chat over the various funny TV programmes that we watched in the evenings. Lionel watches these shows to see how regular British or Germans speak and behave around each other and so learns more about their languages and cultures. Through this lens the frivolous fodder of Channel-4 became incredibly entertaining, if only to hear Lionel’s complaints about how picky the English are when it comes to frying eggs, or the ambitious amount of alcohol they drink before they’ve even met their date for the evening.

The work was easy and manageable. Lionel always made sure I had enough free time and kept me very well fed. He was even kind enough to show me around different villages and towns nearby on my days off, which was so incredible (especially Hyères). I helped out in the garden, preparing the flats for guests to stay in, painting, and a few other small jobs around the house.

I spent two weeks with Lionel, helping in the garden, cooking, cleaning and doing German/French Lessons. Lionel is a very kind and generous man, who will go the extra mile, to make you feel comfortable and to help you.
