Hello! My name is Rhys and I was born in the midlands of England, and raised in California. I am passionate about running, surfing, hiking, reading, writing, and travel. I have spent the majority of the last year backpacking through Asia after moving away from a career as a creative writer in advertising.

My reason for moving away from a chosen career path:
I realized that the time was now. The time to fulfill the crazy ideas I’d had when I was young about traveling the world, meeting people from different backgrounds, and experiencing life from a perspective completely different from my own. I did not want to look back on my life and wish I had fulfilled those dreams instead of spending my young adult life behind a desk.

Why I am joining Workaway:
Including the reasons in the previous section, I want to be a part of something. I have enjoyed the travel of the past year, but I no longer wish to simply see places. I wish to have a purpose. I want the structure and engagement of obligations and responsibilities. I also wish to continue my “life’s education” with an open mind and heart that accepts differences and gracefully adheres to them.

My brief educational and work history:

At University, I studied as a Journalist and Creative Writer with a focus on Advertising as well as earning a minor in Environmental Studies. While there, I worked in a campus kitchen and as a bartender and cellarman in a brewery, each of which taught me organizational structure, social delicacy and working cohesively with a team.

After University, I worked as a freelance copywriter for numerous different advertising agencies in the United States. Throughout these positions, my tasks involved brand voice and image development, creating social media content, and writing UX copy for websites. I also have experience with website creation as I maintained an online website to showcase my work for potential employers. At times, I was balancing 4 different positions which taught me diligence, dedication to my work, and the importance of transparent communication while balancing multiple schedules and timelines.

My strengths lie in creativity, imagination, patience and a fearlessness to try.

Beyond work, I love to be active and get outside. Since last October, my active passion has become running. I am currently running around 20 mi/32 km a week and working towards increasing both pace and distance. I typically run on roads but have engaged in some trail running as well. I also enjoy hiking and trekking—having in the past year walked 98 mi/157 km in western Scotland.

I read and write… a lot. I am currently reading “A Farewell to Arms,” by Ernest Hemingway and I take a notebook everywhere I go for writing short stories or anything that comes to mind.

I am also a photographer with some experience with videography. Aside from studying both of these disciplines at university, I maintain practice with these skills as a passion.

Other things:
I studied South American Spanish in school. I am not very good but I like to think I can communicate to a certain extent and, of course, would be grateful for the opportunity to practice.

Some other fun stuff:

1. I like birdwatching. A slow but rewarding pastime. I managed to see my first Kingfisher this year. Very exciting.

2. I used to take singing lessons and sing in a band. Were we good? No. But it was fun all the same.
