Energetic couples welcome.

We are a small family-run non-profit campground in Magnetawan, Ontario, Canada. This camp has been in our family for more than 60 years. We have 9 cabins on Lake Cecebe that we rent to families and there are also spots for tents. Our Camp is located in Magnetawan, Ontario, Canada (3 hours drive north of Toronto).

In July we run special programs for families with children who have Autism or other special needs. We also run a Vegan week and other events like Meditation Retreats.

All of us who help at the camp are volunteers. You will see that we are very friendly and believe in giving freely of our time and talents and we are looking for people who share a similar personality.

You will have the benefit of experiencing the beauty of Northern Ontario - pristine lakes, wildlife, fresh air, serenity. You will feel rewarded for helping an organization that is truly giving back. If you are learning English, you will have a lot of opportunities to practice. We also love playing music and singing around the campfire. Everyone who joins us leaves feeling like family.

Ajuda
We are looking for one or two people who can help in the following areas (they are listed in order of priority):
1. Cleaning Cabins- we need someone who has attention to detail and can help us clean cabins. Cleaning would be less than 10 hours per week.
2. Childcare and Activity Coordinator - plan and facilitate creative play outdoor activities, crafts, beach fun, campfires etc.
3. Building - we need someone who has carpentry skills. We would like to build a tiny cabin. You can visit our website or look in the photos below to see a sample of one that we already have.
4. Gardening - since we are so busy running programs, we struggle every year to get a vegetable garden going. Help here would be great.
5. Trail help - we would love to make a bike trail on our property.

Acomodação
In May and June we can offer you a rustic fully equipped cabin (see the website for photos and descriptions). In July & August, we can offer you a small trailer with a proper bed or a bunk cabin (the other cabins are filled with customers). You will have access to a well equipped shared kitchen and a hot shower room. We also have wifi.

Please note! We are vegan and only prepare vegan meals. Please don't let this discourage you as we are fantastic cooks!

There is so much to see and do in your spare time. We have canoes, kayaks and pedal boats which you are free to use to explore the lake. We also have a nice beach for swimming and a great beach volleyball court. There is a quaint town nearby with a beautiful park, trails etc. There are rapids nearby and artsy places to visit. But mostly, this is a place to SLOW DOWN and enjoy the beauty of your surroundings.

I stayed volunteer for two weeks in this amazing family and I do not even know how I can summarize everything that I lived.
Even before arriving to the camp Jim and Alyssa were really making sure that everything was going well by texting me some more information and advices.

My initial intention to stay at the Camp for one or two weeks didn't last long. I ended up staying the whole summer. Spending the last 3 months in pure nature at Lake Cecebe with the most wonderful people has been a truly unique experience which I will carry with me forever.

I was greeted with honking, picked up and warmely welcomed by Fran, Jim's mum, as Jim, Alyssa and Asher came up north a week later. We immediately got along very well. Actually there is no way you couldn't get along with someone like Fran, and her whole family. Everybody wears their heart on their sleeves and is looking after each other so well. They always make sure you are comfortable. It's one happy place I can tell you that.

Staying at the camp makes you a part of their life, the camp life, and there is always something to do. As Fran always says "It's never dull." It's pretty amazing as you get to know so many different people. Whatever you want to learn or you are good at already - you will be supported, encouraged and/or taught. One of the main reasons I stayed longer was that I could learn so much from them in any way. We would meet up in a cabin in the evening and have the most amazing talks. On the way back to my trailer next to the office and close to the activity building/ kitchen I would admire the night sky with more stars you'll ever have seen. Every nature person will absolutely love it up here. It's rural and by the lake. There are canoes, kayaks and SUP's you can use. One of my most fascinating encounters during the summer was a black bear. Out on the hidden lake in a canoe with 3 other work awayers he came wandering by and stared at us. It was magical.

The food is just amazing and it's going to be very hard to find places where it is at least half as good. Thank you for providing me with your gourmet meals!
Not to forget we went on numerous outings including everything from nature, culture to family and fun.

I have to come back as the actual Lighthouse wasn't there this year due to flooding last winter. One of the many reasons why I will return. The place and the people definitely made me grow as a person, rethink my view on life, consider alternatives and gave me new perspectives on things. It's an eye and heart opening experience for which I will forever be grateful for.

Thank you another million times Fran, Jim, Alyssa & Asher (and all the rest of the family I was lucky to meet) for this time with you. I'm so grateful to be able to call you my Canadian family. You are awesome! I can't wait to reconnect very soon!

Finally, I have some time to leave a feedback for the Camp and The family.
I could literally write down an entire book about this workaway, but I will try to keep it brief and useful for others to read as Jim, Alyssa, Asher and Fran already know how much I treasure my experience here.

First of all, this place will never be a five hours per day… read more with two days off kind of workaway. There is so much to do that you will always get involved in something. Do not expect to go on solo adventures that often as you will be welcomed in the Slee family and will do lots of volunteering and enjoyable activities with them. They will tour you around and will always make sure that you are more than okay with them.

The Camp is located in Magnetawan, so we are talking about a really small city kind of environment. You will not be able to go clubbing but you will see the brighest stars at night and share a happiness so authentic and real that you might want to stay there forever. Like Laila, another workaway who was there with me (she planned to stay ten days in June and ended up still being there when I left in mid August).

There will be trailers, cabins and tents for guests and staff to live in. I stayed in an isolated trailer close to the lake and around twenty meters from the main office. Lots of outhouses around the camp as they use the compost to make their own fertilizer, but there is also a shower room and a washroom with flush water. I used the latter since I am from a big city and was not used to the outhouses.

Jim, Alyssa, Asher and Fran are vegan. This means that you can enjoy their cooking (which is really good) or will need to buy your own stuff. I advise you to give their cooking a try because it is delicious. Otherwise, try to be at least considerate of their diet.

The bus stop is a little bit sketchy, so if you come with the bus it will be either a Slee or Don to pick you up with a big big smile. A shady figure could be there with your name on a sign, but that is just a joke that Jim thought about because of the sketchyness of the location. So do not worry, it will be actually someone very kind in disguise.

I know I said I would have tried to keep it simple but it is really impossible. So what I can tell everyone on workaway is this: give this place a try, give the Slee your energy and uniqueness, chill in a real Canadian scenario and you will find a new family, warm people that will help you grow as a human and maybe a "brother from another mother". Or a sister. Or... just go.

This place has been a lighthouse in the middle of my stormy life. Love you all: Jim, my brother from another mother; Alyssa, a brave friend, wife and mother that everyone would like to meet in life; Fran, the loud and loving dreamer that will always make you feel welcome; Asher, the coolest kid you will ever meet and my best buddy if I were four like him; Laila, because we know that by August 2020 you will still be at the Camp (jinx it for you!)
