I spent two and a half months in the farm, starting in mid September all the way to the beginning of December. I want to give a complete and accurate depiction of my experience; keep in mind though that my experience is more than 1 month old, so things could have partially changed in the meantime.

- Location: it's a wonderful area surrounded by gorgeous cities and small towns : Hamburg, Kiel and Schwerin are pretty easy to reach with a train from Lubeck, which is wonderful itself. You'll get to the sea in two hours by bike. The small village of Dissau doesn't have any shops in it, so you'll need to take one of the rare buses or a bike to get anywhere. catching buses is sometimes particularly tedious, since they only run a handful of times during the day AND NOT IN THE WEEKEND. In general, i would recommend visiting the farm in Spring or Summer in order to move around more freely with bikes (note: to move at night by bike could be pretty dangerous on country roads without illumination. If you can, bring your own bike light and helmet).
- Accommodation: small yet cozy room, actually really cool. There's a latrine outside but i almost always used the family's bathroom (mind you: at some point in the evening, around 9 p.m. or so, you will not be able to use it anymore unless you comunicate your needs to the family). My room had almost no wi-fi connection but things may have changed. Wash machine and dryer are always available.
- Work: a lot of different tasks. The family understands that mistakes happen and that's really all i could ask for. I really enjoyed it!
- Food: the family provides workawayers with fresh products that are too close to the expiration date to be sold, plus other food. It is generally sufficient. Just a bit of improvisation is needed to come out with cool dishes. Little meat was provided so i recommend you communicate with the family if you have specific needs.
I never ate with the family since they have to care for their children. It was a shame but i understand the reason behind it.
- Relationship with the host: the family is very understanding, kind and helpful. Sadly i couldn't be part of the family as i hoped for, since they prefer to have some privacy. The cultural exchange is the only part of the experience i found lacking.
- Other hosts and coworkers: During my stay i met plenty of other workawayers. The coworkers are kind and they speak only in German.
In summary: awesome experience. Particularly recommended in the warm season. Do not expect an intense cultural exchange with the family.

I spent two weeks with Sophia and Yvo at the farm, and they were two truly wonderful weeks! I really enjoyed the routine I had there, which usually consisted of work between 8am-1pm, then the afternoon and evening free to explore the city or other local towns (or simply stay and relax at the farm, also something I loved to do).
The work almost
… read more always started with looking after the animals, and then after that the tasks were varied. Some days we cleaned the holiday home when new guests were due to arrive, other times the tasks involved work in the garden or the farm shop. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor work, especially as the weather was so beautiful during my time there, however on the occasion when it started to rain, Sophia gave us the option to work on something else indoors, which I really appreciated!
The surrounding area is wonderful to explore, and Lübeck is a very beautiful city. It is ideal to be able to drive here, as Sophia and Yvo kindly let us use the van, but otherwise they also offered us to borrow bicycles.
I didn’t get to spend very much time with the family, as they must value their time together with four children growing up, and so things like cooking and eating were done separately (usually us Workawayers would cook together), however did really enjoy all of the time spent talking with Sophia and Yvo, who were always very kind and would ask how my day had been. I enjoyed the opportunity to cook for myself, and use the food available (including a large variety of organic fruit and vegetables) to create a nice meal.
Overall, I loved my time here and will treasure this experience.

A regular day was to have breakfast in my room and then to meet with Sophia at 8am so she could tell me how I could help today. It usually started with taking care of the animals (giving food and water
… read more for the ducks, sheeps, cat, horses and chicken). Then I could help at the small shop in front of the farm (filling with new vegetables, cleaning), or with gardening to grow vegetables, or preparing the "tiny house" where some cakes and drinks are being sold every Friday, etc. All in all, all the tasks I did were very nice, and it often happened that I didn't work until 1pm because I was finished with something and Sophia didn't want me to start something else, as it's important for her that we enjoy our free time and don't work until too late. I was then cooking lunch for myself with soo many organic vegetables, fruits and other great products that I could use
I enjoyed a lot spending my free time in the farm/garden because I was lucky with the weather, but I also went by bike to a market in a village nearby, visited Lübeck (a lovely city that you must visit) using the bus, and went to the baltic sea by car. But I mainly stayed in Dissau and sometimes walked the dog for example 😊 I also spent much time with the other workaways who were amazing people, we had a lot of fun and cooked a lot together!
To host the workaways, one room is in the house and another smaller room is in the warehouse attached to the house, I made it my own little room and really liked staying there, the cat was also coming very often to visit me! We had our own bathroom in the house for the workaways (toilets and sink) and were using the shower in the family's bathroom. If we needed it at night or in the day we also had the compost toilets (which are perfectly clean) and a sink outside. I think it's important to have in mind that Sophia and Yvo are happy to share their home but they also need their own space as they work a lot and take care of their four children!
Sophia and Yvo are lovely and generous people, it was very nice to chat with them and I am very thankful that they mostly talked to me in German because they knew I wanted to learn! (But they also speak English well if needed!)

Even though I only spend a short time with Sophia, Yvo and the kids, I really enjoyed my stay!
They are some of the nicest and sweetest people, and invited me into their home. The ingredients they gave me to cook food was amazing and there were a lot of different options.

It's a small, remote town and nice to stay away from the city.
I would definitely recommend coming! But I think spring or summer would be a better option, since you'd get to spend much more time outside!

I was introduced to the neighbors and offered plenty of ideas to fill my free time with fun activities. During my stay, I got sick and was graciously offered rest from work until I recovered.
I especially enjoyed sledding with Jeremias and bouldering with Philip!

Ich war zwei Wochen bei euch auf dem Hof und ich hätte noch viel länger bleiben können. In der Freizeit habe ich die Spaziergänge, die Ausflüge nach Lübeck (30min mit dem Bus) und an die Ostsee sehr genossen. Zudem ist es sehr schön, dass es meisten noch andere Workawayer*innen gibt, mit denen man zusammenarbeiten, abends gemeinsam kochen und auch sonst die Freizeit verbringen kann.

Es ist auch ein perfekter Ort für Leute, die Deutsch lernen wollen. Alle Leute waren sehr geduldig mit mir und ich konnte mein Deutsch wirklich verbessern! Dafür bin ich sehr dankbar!

I have spent three wonderful weeks with you here. It was my first experience with Workaway and I can only recommend it!
Sophia and Yvo are very caring and attentive people who made me feel comfortable and the work was fun and not too hard. I took care of the poneys, the chicken and the very sweet dog. I also greeted the camper. The food was delicious, with lots of fresh organic vegetables, fruit and eggs. It was nice to ride the bike in the surrounding area and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
It is also a perfect place for people who want to learn German. All the people were very patient with me and I could really improve my German! I am very grateful for that!

I had a great time at this beautiful family! Yvo and Sophia are very nice people and I enjoyed spending time with their children. It was a timely experience for both parts as I needed a short time to stay and they had a small project for me to help with, stocking up some firewood and building a fence together.

I had a fantastic experience staying with Sophia and Yvo for two weeks. The work was very enjoyable and I got to feed the chickens every morning which was a lot of fun. The children were very friendly and I enjoyed trying out my German with them and playing games with them; the whole family was very open and owing to the 3 other workawayers at the time of my stay there was a wonderful sense of community and always someone open for a conversation. … read more darum bemüht, dass es mir gut geht, was ihnen definitiv gelungen ist. Ich habe die Atmosphäre und die Menschen auf dem Hof mit all ihren tollen Ideen als unglaublich inspirierend empfunden und hatte große Freude daran, zu verschiedenen Projekten auf einen Teil beitragen zu dürfen. Die Arbeit war extrem abwechslungsreich, sodass ich auch in der kurzen Zeit sehr viel gelernt habe - sei es über Hühner, das Handwerken oder über alte Gemüsesorten. Sophia und Yvo haben ihr Wissen gerne mit mir geteilt und haben mir als Handwerk-Anfängerin geduldig alle meine Fragen beantwortet.
Am Nachmittag und den Wochenenden blieb dann genug Zeit, um die Ruhe der umliegenden Natur zu genießen, nach Lübeck zu fahren oder sogar die Strände der Lübecker Bucht zu erkunden.
Für mich war die Zeit auf eine unglaublich bereichernde.
Ich danke euch allen für eure Gastfreundschaft und diese rundum schöne Erfahrung!
I spent two wonderful weeks here. I immediately felt comfortable here, thanks to the lovely furnished guest room, the good food and especially to the warm and open manner of the whole family with whom I was welcomed. Sophia and Yvo always tried to make sure I was well, which they have definitely succeeded. The atmosphere and the people here with all their great ideas were extremely inspiring and I really enjoyed being able to contribute to various projects on the farm.
The work was very varied, so I learned a lot even in the short time - among others about chickens, handcraft and old vegetables. Sophia and Yvo were happy to share their knowledge and patiently answered all my questions.
In the afternoon and on weekends there was enough time to enjoy the tranquility of the surrounding nature, drive to Lübeck or even explore the beaches nearby.
For me, the time here was incredibly enriching.

Ich hatte viel Freude dabei sie zu betreuen und mit ihnen zu spielen. Ich durfte an den Familienfeiern teilhaben und wurde überall mit eingebunden, so fühlte ich mich wie ein Teil der Familie. It has been such an great time staying at Sophia's and Yvo's they are very caring people. It has been important that I'm all good and have everything I need to feel confi at any time during my stay. The childes are wilde, free and abel to enjoy life, it has been a pleasure to take care of them and fun to play around. They also invited me to all the family events so I felt like a part of the family while staying at the farm. I cared for the chickens too, and could improve my gardening skills. Sophia and Yvo have got some knowledge they are happy to share and also an open ear if I needed someone to talk to. Thank you so much for the greate time. We stayed for two wonderful weeks in the farm.
Sophia and yvo were wonderful hosting us, we stayed in their house where we felt welcome and super comfortable in a beautiful room.
